God Of War IV: Should It Have A New Hero And Setting?

We have to assume a fourth God of War is on the way, and recent evidence makes us believe that Sony Santa Monica is already cranking on the new adventure.

But here's the big question: should we have the same hero and setting? The developers have said Kratos' story will have to come to an end at some point, and if you played and completed God of War III , you probably have a lot of questions…

Now, Kratos is a confirmed bad-ass and everyone seems to love the Greek mythology atmosphere. There's always more you can do with that, but SCEA Santa Monica may want to spread their wings; they've hinted as much in the past. But is this one franchise that absolutely requires a recognizable face and landscape? Will people be skeptical if the devs change everything? I mean, even if they keep the same gameplay (combat, platforming, etc.), we've been on the Kratos bandwagon since 2005. Familiarity is a good thing, isn't it?

There are other franchises that are often forced to change; Ubisoft started Assassin's Creed with Altair in a medieval setting, and then shifted to a new protagonist (Ezio) and the late-15th century in Italy. It seemed to work out there, didn't it? Of course, they tied Ezio to Altair and now, they're going to bring the two together in Constantinople in Assassin's Creed: Revelations . So we don't necessarily require the same hero and atmosphere. Still, as I said above, we've been playing as Kratos for a good six years.

Okay, so if they change it, what should we see? What kind of character and setting would you love to immerse yourself in?

God Of War 4 Multiplayer Rumor Return

For a while now, the rumor has been circulating that the next God of War would feature a multiplayer option.

And according to the rumor section of the UK Official PlayStation Magazine, we've received a very clear statement- "Kratos is on his way back, with his next adventure set to feature multiplayer." While most fans will say the game doesn't require such a feature, we all have to remember that in this day and age, a title isn't actually allowed to hit store shelves without online multiplayer. If it does, big guys with lead pipes show up at the door of the game's director and break his kneecaps. …Shinji Mikami ( Vanquish ) must not be able to walk right now. But at any rate, we have complete faith in Sony Santa Monica; they won't wreck our beloved franchise just because they're tossing in a multiplayer feature.

By the way, the other important rumor concerning this project is that it'll release in September 2012. That's a break from tradition – GoW titles have always launched in March – but we can live with that.

Rumor: Fourth God Of War Slated For September 2012

The best action franchise of the generation can't die. It's only a matter of time…

And perhaps that time has been revealed already: according to PSM3 , the fourth God of War is scheduled to launch in September 2012. We've seen snippets of evidence of the new installment over the past few months, including a "God of War 4 cinematic test" on a LinkedIn CV (the game name was later retracted), and now it seems the publication has an inside scoop:

"PSM3 has heard from another source that God of War 4 is coming, and will hit in September 2012. Our source works closely with the God of War universe, and let slip he'd be working on a related project at the same time."

GoWIII marked the end of a trilogy but developer Sony Santa Monica has said the franchise itself is far from over. The only problem we have with this rumor is that all GoW titles have released in March. It's sort of like a tradition. That being said, perhaps SCEA wants the possibility of increased sales that a late summer/early fall release can generate.

Who knows? We just know we want it.
