Square Enix E3 Lineup Confirmed, Final Fantasy Fans Bored

So we got Square Enix's official E3 presentation list today. …and if you're a Final Fantasy fan, we have nothing for you.

Well, besides the bizarrely named Theatrhythm Final Fantasy for the Nintendo 3DS, which isn't garnering a whole lot of press and attention. Unfortunately, there's no mention of Final Fantasy Versus XIII or the rumored Final Fantasy XIII-3 .

That being said, the publisher will be bringing several intriguing games to the show next week; here are the titles on tap for consoles and PC:

Tomb Raider was recently delayed until 2013 but we're still excited about it, and Hitman: Absolution could be one of the year's best (provided it's done correctly). We're also intrigued by Kim Swift's Quantum Conundrum , which reminds us a lot of Portal …and that in turn makes us very happy. Square Enix also plans to bring a horde of mobile games to E3, but we only report on real games.

Is anyone really surprised that we're not seeing Versus XIII ? Nah.

Rumor: Final Fantasy Versus XIII Has Become Final Fantasy XV

What fresh wackiness is this ?

Thanks to a tip, we've noticed a huge rumor at Cinema Blend : It seems Square Enix has released early pre-E3 footage of Final Fantasy Versus XIII , and the leaked video confirms it is coming to the PlayStation 3 and Wii U (no Xbox 360 mentioned), and it is now called – wait for it – Final Fantasy XV .

The video recently arrived on German site Zocking Extreme (no, we have no affiliation with them), and you can view it below and come to your own conclusion. Unfortunately, nobody has any idea about the actual source, so…

Admittedly, this does seem surprisingly authentic, although we have no idea where this is taking place, or why it's being shown to people who don't appear to be journalists. Furthermore, the "pre-E3" part is a little confusing, as Square Enix's confirmed E3 lineup doesn't include Versus XIII or Final Fantasy XV .

Well, talk among yourselves.

Square Enix E3 Lineup: Tomb Raider, But No FF Versus XIII

Yeah, but what should we expect? Really?

The good news is that this is an incomplete list; the source in question only lists confirmed titles for this year's E3.

There's still the possibility that other games might be announced at various press conferences, and the hopeful might say Final Fantasy Versus XIII could be part of Sony's conference. Well, that's only if the game is still a PS3 exclusive (and many doubt that it is) and besides, Square Enix has just recently said we have to be "patient." 'sigh' Anyway, here's what you definitely can expect:

Yes, there might be some wacky translating going on. We're also wondering if they might announce Final Fantasy XIII-3 because at this point, it almost seems inevitable, wouldn't you say?

When Do We Start Calling Final Fantasy Versus XIII Vaporware?

At first it was a little frustrating, then it got borderline comical, and now…well, it's just downright boring.

That's the path most "vaporware" tends to follow. The term, created and popularized on the good ol' Internet, refers to a game that has been in the hopper for a very long time. Duke Nukem Forever probably generated the word and to this day, despite the game's eventual – and depressingly horrid – release, it's still the epitome of vaporware. After all, it took, what…13 years?

We're nowhere near that mark with Final Fantasy Versus XIII just yet, but at this rate, who knows? In the latest Game Informer issue , Square Enix director Tetsuya Nomura was once again asked about the progress of the long-awaited FF installment. And once again, he had no update besides this:

"We would like to ask for your patience on an official announcement for this title. It always takes time when tackling the challenge of doing something completely new, but we are doing our best to bring information to the fans as quickly as we can.

Your patience is greatly appreciated."

It was January 2011 that Square Enix promised an official unveiling "within a month." But the game was actually announced way back in 2007, which means we're entering the fifth year of this go-nowhere saga. Many believe it's because somewhere along the way, Square Enix decided they had to make the game multiplatform, as they did with Final Fantasy XIII (and the sequel). Others say it's because they're actually making it for next-gen systems now (PS4, Xbox 720).

Yeah, well, I've heard all this before. We all went through several generations listening to similar junk concerning DNF (or "Did Not Finish" as we liked to call it). And with almost nothing in the way of news, one has to wonder: At what point do we give Final Fantasy Versus XIII the correct label? Time to face up to depressing facts.

Square Enix: FF Versus XIII News “Soon,” Whatever That Means

It has become a running joke among role-playing and Final Fantasy fans, and Square Enix isn't doing much to convince us the project even exists.

Typically, the publisher is mute concerning the game that was originally announced back in 2007. But at the Square Enix Members Twitter page , some industrious followers thought they'd try to get some answers. One Tweet from a fan includes the words- "The fans demand more info!" We're with you on that. But in response to the question concerning fresh news for the game, the reply was as follows:

"Nope, but look for news soon (soon can mean so many things though really…)"

Wow, that fills you with lots of confidence, doesn't it? It almost sounds like Square Enix has no clue when they'll reveal more details or if they do, such an unveiling is a long ways off. We still remember January of 2011, when we were promised a full reveal in February or March…still waiting on that one, S-E. "Soon can mean so many things?" From some developers, that'd be funny. But here, it's just depressing.

Versus XIII Update: Square Enix Couldn’t Possibly Be More Vague

Ever since Final Fantasy XIII-2 launched, the fans started to ask: So where's that Final Fantas Versus XIII unveiling, Square Enix?

Years have passed with promises of more information but thus far, nothing. However, producer Tetsuya Nomura did provide an update when interviewed by Famitsu (as cited by Gaming Everything ). …but don't get your hopes up.

Basically, he said he has "completed work on information relating to the game, and these details will be shared with the public in the future." Well, isn't that nice. "In the future." Now, that could mean E3 although the publisher has often made many of their big announcements at the Tokyo Game Show, which of course isn't until the fall. Or, maybe Square Enix will hold some sort of special unveiling event in between major industry shows. We're just trying to be cautiously optimistic.

But such an update doesn't really mean much, does it? And unfortunately, that seems to be a trend with Versus XIII ; there's a lot of, "oh, we're getting stuff ready to tell/show you," but nothing ever really happens. This is probably the reason a great many just sort of roll their eyes when they see an "update" for this game.
