Final Fantasy XV Director Clarifies Game’s 10 Million Sales Goal

Does Final Fantasy XV really need to sell 10 million copies to turn a profit?

Some people thought that's what game director Hajime Tabata meant when he said the anticipated title would have to push that many units in order to be considered a "success."

But Tabata has now clarified his comments. In a statement to Famitsu (as translated by Novacrystallis ), the Square Enix boss said that was the ideal number for the team; i.e., how many copies the devs would like the game to sell. It's not necessarily the number they need to hit to make money. Obviously, Tabata admitted that 10 million is a pretty lofty goal but the publisher is clearly going to push the hell out of this game, if that massive "Uncovered" event is any indication.

As a frame of reference, Final Fantasy VII , which originally released in 1997, is the best-selling game in the franchise at 11 million. Of course, that number was reached over several years, but it's also worth noting that the industry was a lot smaller then, too. As for how many copies FFXV will sell, or how many it needs to sell for Square Enix to turn a profit, well, that all remains to be seen.

Final Fantasy XV is set to launch on September 30 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. There is currently a new playable sample, titled the Platinum Demo, available if you wish to try it; here's the trailer:

Final Fantasy XV Expected To Sell Over A Million In Japan

If you weren't aware, the mobile game market has sort of hurt the console market in Japan.

And because of that, sales estimations for even big upcoming console titles might seem lower than you might imagine. Take Final Fantasy XV , for example.

In the February issue of Nikkei Trendy (as translated by DualShockers ), Square Enix says both FFXV and Dragon Quest XI are expected to sell over a million copies in the local market. They also anticipate the games giving console hardware a boost, which isn't too surprising. However, remember that Final Fantasy XIII sold 1.7 million units in Japan in just its first two weeks, and that was when there were far fewer PS3s and 360s than there are PS4s and Xbox Ones now.

Also, it's worth noting that the Nikkei article mentions FFXV's action-based combat, as it's likely to "split the opinion of the traditional fans of the series, but will appeal to lovers of action games." And my response to this insanity has always been the same? What action fan is buying a Final Fantasy ? Seriously?

Recently, we wondered if Kingdom Hearts III might outsell FFXV and chances are, it probably will.

Could Kingdom Hearts III Actually Outsell Final Fantasy XV?

There was a time when we should've scoffed at the suggestion.

Kingdom Hearts is great and all but a new entry outselling a new Final Fantasy ? Impossible.

Well, that was before the once-dominant FF franchise completely tanked with the FFXIII trilogy. The last entry, the depressingly mediocre Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII , only managed to sell just over a million units worldwide . Its predecessor, FFXIII-2, sold less than 2.7 million, while FFXIII did comparatively well with just over 5.3 million. Of course, to have a final entry sell one-fifth of the first game in that trilogy is just comically bad.

Now, Kingdom Hearts II sold a combined 4.3 million copies , which is hugely significant. It almost seems as if FFXV has zero chance of outselling KHIII considering these numbers, right? Not only has FF's reputation fallen into the toilet but Kingdom Hearts remains widely beloved and, perhaps, just as popular as ever. So, maybe the question isn't, "will KHIII outsell FFXV?" but rather, "by how much will KHIII outsell FFXV?"

What say you?
