Bloodborne Enjoys Elden Ring Mania-Led Player Count Spike

Bloodborne

Bloodborne already had a core audience that never stopped playing, but amidst the release of Shadow of the Erdtree — the much-anticipated Elden Ring DLC — the game saw a huge spike in players. Dark Souls 3 also saw a spike in players.

A report from TrueTrophies notes that from the first week of June to a week after the DLC’s release, Bloodborne climbed 57.77% climb the ranks among both PS5 and PS4 players. That said, it doesn’t stop there as FromSoftware’s 2015 Soulsborne game continues to grow within the PS4 community.

As it stands, Bloodborne is now placed at spot 65 of the most-played PlayStation of the week.

Elden Ring Tops 23 Million Copies Sold

Since debuting early 2022, FromSoftware’s Elden Ring has topped 23 million copies sold, and that’s not even accounting for June-bound Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The numbers account for physical and digital sales across all platforms.

As reported by IGN, Bandai Namco issued an update about the game’s sales, which back in 2023, was floating around 20 million, so within that timeframe it’s totaled at least three more million. It’s actually just shy of the impressive sales number of Hogwarts Legacy, which is around 24 million.

Even though FromSoft popularized a genre with Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and its proceeding titles, Elden Ring hit different, blowing others out of the water and becoming the developer’s most successful game. Considering we’ve got a DLC on the horizon, we imagine this number will grow.

FromSoftware Becomes Sole Owner Of Elden Ring IP

Elden Ring

Developer FromSoftware has seemingly become the sole owner of the Elden Ring IP, meaning it doesn’t have to take orders from publisher Bandai Namco. We doubt this will change the future of the successful title.

As reported by PSU, changes to the Elden Ring trademark filing has surfaced, showing that the Japanese game dev has acquired the sole rights to the Soulslike. In and of itself, it’s actually been some time since Bandai’s been involved in the game, as the transfer appears to have happened all the way back in April.

Based on a Reddit post, FromSoft was able to acquire sole rights to the game because of investments from big players, namely Sony and Chinese media megacorporation Tencent.

FROMSOFTWARE is now the sole owner of Elden ring IP, thanks to Sony and Tencent investments to help the developer self-publish.

Elden Ring Expansion Is Still “A Little While Yet” Away

Elden Ring

It sounds like Elden Ring fans have a while to wait before Shadow of the Erdtree makes a proper debut, as the expansion is still “a little while yet.” Last we heard, the award-winning game’s expansion was developing smoothly.

Speaking with Game Watch (via PCGamesN), FromSoftware vet Yasuhiro Kitao explained that the expansion is still a ways away, comparing it to Bloodborne’s expansion, complete with new battles and characters to interact with. Regardless, progress is going well — it just needs more time before release.

The outlet mentions how some Steam backend stuff have changed to make note of Shadow of the Erdtree, which conveniently lines up with The Game Awards right around the corner, so it’s possible something might be revealed then, but with this Kitao’s comment, it wouldn’t make a lot of sense to say that and then turn around and reveal more.

Elden Ring DLC Development Going “Smoothly”

Elden Ring

FromSoftware’s parent company, Kadokawa, has provided an update to Elden Ring‘s Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, stating its development is running “smoothly.” Meanwhile, the Japanese dev is still staffing up for multiple new unannounced projects.

During a recent Q&A (via VGC), it discussed how the DLC’s development is going, but also refrained from giving any sort of hint as to when a release date could be revealed.

The award-winning FromSoft game was confirmed to be getting a DLC back in February, but much of its details are shrouded in mystery.

“The release timing of DLC for Elden Ring has not yet been announced, but development is proceeding smoothly […] We are currently working hard on the development of DLC for Elden Ring but we have not announced a release date at this time.”

God Of War Ragnarok Wins Players’ Choice’s Best PS5 Game

God of War Ragnarok

While most other award shows have dubbed Elden Ring the top dog, it seems as expected PlayStation’s Players’ Choice Awards gave the Santa Monica Studio game a taste of victory. The Game Awards, Golden Joystick, Japan Game Awards, and more all favored the FromSoftware game for last year’s coveted Game of the Year title.

PlayStation’s award showcase, which admittedly might have some skew to it, is primarily driven by voters’ choices in the categories they voted in. After months of waiting, the results are in on the PlayStation Blog. It seems God of War Ragnarok was a cut above the other games in the Best PS5 Game category — Elden Ring, Horizon Forbidden West, and Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut.

Of course, there’s debate on how valid this could seem as Elden Ring has a wider net of players since its multiplatform, but it is a good win for those who felt the swan song of the Norse Saga was snubbed out of Game of the Year.
