Sony On Driveclub Delay: It Just Wasn’t Ready In November

Driveclub was supposed to be a PlayStation 4 launch title. Unfortunately, though, it wasn't ready.

That's the explanation Sony has given for the delay, and it's a common one. Sony UK boss Fergal Gara said that while racing fans were miffed, they "wanted it to be right:"

"I don't have any announcement on it now. The only reason that product was delayed and we haven't accurately communicated a revised release date is that we want it to be right. There's a fair promise in that title in what it wants to do with social features and really innovating in the driving genre.

There's no point in it coming out and half doing that job. It was quite ambitious and didn't quite get there in the timeline hoped. That's not great, but it's far better to bring it out at the standard."

All of that is true, of course. Nobody wants a half-ass product on the shelf, especially when it's an exclusive title for a new console. At the same time, I would've liked an actual release estimate update. We've heard that it might launch later this month (alongside Watch Dogs , actually) but other estimates have placed Driveclub in summer.

Do you have a problem with it being delayed? I don't. Get it right, I say.

Rumor: Driveclub Will Be Ready Before February 22, 2014

Driveclub was supposed to be a launch title for the PlayStation 4, but was unfortunately delayed.

At the time of the delay, Sony said the game would release in "early 2014." They haven't been any more specific than that since the announcement, but perhaps we should expect it to arrive before February 22.

According to DualShockers , the Japanese PS4 website posted up a list of titles that would be released "at the same time as the console February the 22nd, 2014." Remember, the PS4 is set to launch in Japan on February 22. And lo and behold, Driveclub is included, which means it should be a launch title for the PS4 in Japan, and it means North America and Europe could see the title around the same time. It might be cool to get it earlier, though.

It'd actually be nice if we could get it in January. We'll be too busy playing inFamous: Second Son in February.

Driveclub Officially Delayed, Evolution “Requires More Time”

Unfortunately, those reports were accurate.

As announced over at the PlayStation Blog , the previously confirmed PlayStation 4 launch title Driveclub has been delayed until early 2014. This delay applies to both the regular and PlayStation Plus editions of the game.

The involving racer is in development at Evolution Studios, but Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida said the team "requires more time in order to deliver on their vision." This decision does affect the Instant Game Collection for Plus members at the PS4's launch: Driveclub will still be part of the IGC when it's released; in the meantime, the title has been replaced with Contrast . If you're not familiar with the highly creative project from Compulsion Games, check out the trailer below. It's definitely intriguing.

Yoshida adds that while this news is disappointing, new PS4 owners "will have no shortage of titles to play this year." Launch titles include Killzone: Shadow Fall , Knack , Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag , Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts . Yeah, well, it's not quite as impressive without Watch Dogs or Driveclub . Just sayin'.
