PS5, PC Dreams Is No Longer In The Works

Media Molecule

Media Molecule has stopped production of the PS5 and PC ports of its flagship Dreams title following the mass layoffs. No word from the studio, so take this with a slight grain of salt.

Hacker and dataminer Lance McDonald claimed during a livestream (via WCCFTech) that a source who was testing the game was informed it was no longer in production due to the layoffs. This port would’ve provided players on the current-gen console — and PC — a native experience playing the uniquely — albeit ended — PlayStation exclusive. It would’ve also come packaged with Ray Tracing and mouse and keyboard support on the PS5.

Even more bitter is the fact the ports were basically finished by the time they were canceled. We can’t help but echo WCCF’s take, which is not taking the dive into releasing a PC version would mark a bad decision on Sony’s part, the game would work wonderfully with the slew of people happy to dive in and develop mods for it.

What do you think? Is it a missed opportunity to not release the game to current-gen hardware and PC? Let us know below!

Why Media Molecule’s Putting An End To Dreams Live Service

Media Molecule

Not too long ago, Media Molecule revealed its intentions to step away from Dreams and its live service model. Unfortunately, this isn’t changing, but more insight has been shared about why they believe this is the right decision.

Speaking with Push Square, studio director Siobhan Reddy explained that they are proud of what Dreams has accomplished, but the studio couldn’t figure out a sustainable path forward for the PlayStation exclusive. There just wasn’t enough community support to warrant extending support beyond its reasonable means.

“It doesn’t mean we’re not super proud of it, and that we have just been blown away by what everybody has created, and are still creating… It’s complicated because we are very, very proud of this beautiful thing that we made, but when we sat down and had a look at what we needed to do as a studio, we just couldn’t find that sustainable path, so we had to make that decision.”

To keep things frank, the studio is also in the process of moving on to a new game — Tren, a train-based game made in Dreams, which was shown off to the public back in 2021. It’s worth pointing out the game itself isn’t going to disappear, but rather official support, such as patches and stuff, will end when the game’s support ends on September 1.

Media Molecule Appoints John Beech As New Creative Director

Media Molecule

Following the departure of co-founder Mark Healey, PlayStation Studios’ Media Molecule had to figure out who would take over the creative director role. It seems like that honor has fallen onto lead designer John Beech.

The studio revealed this news on Twitter, where the company’s account congratulated the long-time employee on his big promotion.

Beech started his journey with the studio in 2009 when Media Molecule was seeking new people within the active LittleBigPlanet content community. He was then appointed lead designer on Dreams, which boosted the studio’s presence even further.

It seems like a lot is changing over at the Cali-based studio over the last year. Back in December 2022, co-founder Kareem Ettouney left the studio followed by Mark Healey a few months later.

Unfortunately, with Dreams closing up shop in September, it’s hard to imagine what the PlayStation Studios studio has in store, but we’re sure it’ll have some sort of noticeable charm.

Dreams Central Looks To Fill PS Home Void

Dreams Central

Thirteen years ago, during the PS3 era, there was a social experience called PlayStation Home. Six years ago, it was shut down. Now, it looks like a team of Dreams developer is seeking to fill that void with Dreams Central.

Almost in perfect timing, the developers behind the game within a game, dropped its announcement trailer to give people something to look forward to.

While the trailer only showed bare bones of what they plan, it’s still something that certainly gives off a PlayStation Home charm, which is the point. The main drive to make Dreams Central was to fill the void that Home left when it was shut down.

“When PlayStation Home closed, it left a void in the gaming community which hasn’t really been filled. The idea of a 3D social network was ahead of its time and the initial vision wasn’t fully realised.”

Now, with the news of Sony renewing its trademark, some hope it’ll come back in some way. Even if it doesn’t, though, we still have Dreams Central to fill that void.

Currently, they hope to launch the game sometime in the first quarter of 2022 and have been hard at work since 2019.

What do you think? Will this Dreams project fill the void? Tell us below!

We Wish Media Molecule A Very Happy Tenth Birthday!

It's hard to imagine the PlayStation brand without Sackboy today, isn't it?

That's why we're wishing LittleBigPlanet studio Media Molecule a very happy 10th birthday. They're celebrating the anniversary over at the PlayStation Blog , so go wish them well.

On this day a decade ago, the team was founded by a group of friends who went on to change the face of the PlayStation landscape. The original LittleBigPlanet earned Media Molecule all sorts of well-deserved acclaim, as it was not only one of the first great PS3 exclusives, it was also a huge step forward in terms of customization, creativity and wildly imaginative entertainment. LittleBigPlanet 2 was another fantastic success and then they went on to deliver the stellar Tearaway , arguably still the best Vita title in existence (and also available now on PS4).

They're currently working on another anticipated PS4 exclusive, Dreams , which was unveiled at E3 2015 . We can also expect a beta at some point. Happy Birthday, Media Molecule; you're one of the best and brightest developers in existence!
