Drakengard For PS4? Sadly, Not Enough Money In The Till

Without the start-up cash, you just can't make the game.

Drakengard 3 launched for the PlayStation 3 in Japan in 2013 and it's slated to come to the US some time this year. So, might we also see a new installment for the PS4?

A fan asked series director Taro Yoko on Twitter whether or not we can expect such a project. Unfortunately, Yoko replied:

"Thank you for your message. I hope to make the game for PS4 but I can't have enough money for development. :("

A later Twitter reply from another fan suggested a Kickstarter campaign, which wouldn't be a bad idea. Drakengard has been one of those niche franchises that only caught on with a select few here in the west, but a sequel done right could be excellent. However, resources are always essential and if you don't got 'em, nothing happens. Who wants to loan Yoko and Co. some money so they can get started?

Drakengard 3 Finally Hits PS3 In 2014

Better late than never!

Square Enix has announced that Drakengard 3 will release exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in North America next year. It will be the first time gamers have seen this series since Drakengard 2 launched on the PS2 back in 2006.

The third entry is a prequel to the first title and is slated to hit Japanese store shelves later this month. Nier composer Keiichi Okabe handled the music for Drakengard 3 and as you might expect, that great music will accompany our dragon-riding. Dragons are a big part of this action/RPG that features both ground and air combat. Players will control two sisters – Zero and One – who wield the power of the ancient Utauti goddesses.

Those lucky gamers in Japan will be able to purchase a special 10th anniversary Drakengard 3 box set that will feature a book entitled "Drakengard: World Inside," a soundtrack CD, and a Blu-Ray disc called "Drakengard History Films." There's no word on whether or not this compilation will be available in North America. We're guessing it won't be.

New Drakengard Set For Japanese PS3s

There's a name you might not have heard for a while. Think Square Enix will get the third entry right?

According to Japanese publication Famitsu (as cited by GameSpot ), a new Drakengard will be hitting the PlayStation 3 in Japan at some point in the future. The developer is Access Games ( Deadly Premonition , Lord of Arcana ), and original members of the Drakengard design team – who also worked on the well-received Nier – will be involved.

Yoko Taro is on board as the creative director, Kimihiko Fujisaka will handle character design, Keiichi Okabe will be the music director, and Takamasa Shiba will produce. The main characters are sisters called Zero and One and they have the ability to cast spells via songs. Their personalities constantly clash, too, as one is more quiet and reserved while the other is outgoing and brash. As you might expect, the gameplay will feature both air combat and ground combat.

Drakengard first released on the PS2 in 2004 and a sequel followed in 2006. If you're wondering, neither fared very well in the eyes of critics, but maybe Square Enix just needed better hardware for the ambitious ground/air gameplay combo. There's no knowing if Drakengard 3 (if that's what it'll be called) will come to the US. Would you want it if it did?
