Maybe some of you have been intimidated by what you've seen of the gameplay in DMC . And maybe you combine that with what you've heard of the franchise's steep difficulty in the past, and you're leery about trying the upcoming reboot.
But Ninja Theory says that newcomers to the franchise shouldn't be frightened of the super fast-paced and incredibly intricate-looking maneuvers we've spotted in trailers and videos. Don't worry, you can do it.
Combat designer Rahni Tucker told OXM UK that they've attempted to create a mechanic that will cater to both n00bs and hardcore experts; the former won't be overwhelmed while the latter will find all the depth and complexity they desire. Said Tucker:
"When I looked at videos of pro-players playing the old DMCs, they're always in the air, they're always juggling enemies around, and doing stuff that most of us look at and think 'I have no idea how that works.'
We wanted to take that magic the pro-players could create and give more casual players a bit of that feeling. A bit extra hang-time, more aerial moves, the launch button is a single press without a lock-on."
Dante's launch and grappling capabilities have returned, and the combos look totally insane. However, while the AI won't consist of mindless pushovers, those unfamiliar with the series (and action games in general) shouldn't be scared. Game director Hideaki Itsuno has said that this "commercially necessary shift" has not sacrificed the top end; in other words, you'll need a ton of skill to be really impressive in the ranking category. Yes, practice and patience will be rewarded.
"As the series has gone we've seen new users die out, as it took longer to get into it. When it came time to make DMC 4, with the new hero and new moves, new techniques and skills, not many new fans entered the series."
DMC will be ready on January 15.
