Dead Island Reaches 3 Million Shipped

Although the game had its fair share of problems, many gamers still found Dead Island wildly entertaining.

Many, many gamers. According to Game Informer , publisher Deep Silver has confirmed that they have now shipped 3 million copies of the zombie-slaying survival game since its September launch.

The advertising wasn't bad, and with decent critical acclaim and that intense, emotional promotional CG trailer that nobody can forget, Dead Island flew off store shelves. We don't have an exact sales number, but here's what Aubrey Norris, Deep Silver Manager of Marketing & PR said:

"Dead Island has sold very, very well over the holiday season and we are thrilled that it has sustained a robust level of sell-through since launch in September."

There have been rumors of both a sequel and a movie adaptation, although neither has been confirmed by the publisher. Right now, it seems Dead Island has done extremely well, and it just might be a hot holiday item, too. We definitely want to see another effort and provided Techland fixes a few issues, it could be a fantastic production.

Dead Island Hits 1 Million Shipped In Just A Few Days

Dead Island is a fun game. It isn't perfect but a whole lot of people have responded positively to the entertaining action/RPG hybrid.

Deep Silver has announced that Techland's zombie-slaying survival adventure with role-playing elements has shipped over 1 million copies in North America "in the first few days of availability." Furthermore, Dead Island occupies the #1 software slot in several global markets – including the UK and France – and it seems that ship number will reach 2 million before the end of this week.

Although we weren't as complimentary as other critics, Dead Island has managed to snag plenty of praise from reviewers and gamers worldwide. Featuring an in-depth style of first-person combat, a large, open environment, and a fair amount of creativity and customization, the game can definitely be addictive. Said Geoff Mulligan, Deep Silver COO:

"We’re thrilled at the retail reception Dead Island has achieved in its first few days. The critical ‘first week’ of game sales has been an enormous sales success for Deep Silver. We’re working quickly with our distribution partner in North America, Square Enix, to restock shelves as quickly as we can."

Square Enix CEO and president Mike Fischer added that with a million copies out there, it's nice to know "that the world is now more prepared than ever for what to do should a real zombie invasion ever threaten humanity." …yes, we assume he's joking. At any rate, it's nice to see Dead Island succeeding. Are you one of the many who picked it up?

Dead Island Flexing Some Role-Playing Muscle?

When we did our preview for Techland's bloody and seemingly engaging zombie-slayin' Dead Island , we mentioned the possibility of RPG-like elements.

And we should be talking to the developer tomorrow to learn more about the game but in the meantime, more information has arisen. Apparently, this comes from Deep Silver Special Products Consultant Doug McLeod, who talked about the weapon crafting system.

Basically, we'll be able to upgrade weapons we like, which sort of implies inherent weapon levels, or augmentations that enhance the effectiveness of the weapon. There's talk of a deodorant bomb of some kind, too… Also, it seems the weapons are divided into classes, each of which will be designated by a color. Rare items will be in green, while blue and orange weapons are especially strong.

The bottom line is that the more you use a particular weapon, the better you can make it. I love the idea but then again, aren't a lot of action games doing something similar these days? The lines between RPGs and other genres have definitely become blurred.

P.S. If you play Deus Ex: Human Revolution enough, you start to use the word "augmentation" more often.

Dead Island Golden, “Fight Together” Trailer Released

It's bloody and brutal, and it might just be the fast-paced zombie-slayin' game you crave.

The intriguing Dead Island has gone gold, and it'll be on store shelves on September 6. It shares the launch day with Insomniac's Resistance 3 but while both games are played from a first-person viewpoint, I think we can all agree that both are quite different from one another. Also, if you haven't seen the co-op side of Deep Silver's production, check out the new trailer released today.
