Dead Island Hits 5 Million Worldwide

Zombies still rule.

Deep Silver has announced that their popular and critically acclaimed open-world zombie-slaying adventure, Dead Island , has passed the five million mark in worldwide sales since its launch in September 2011. That milestone was reached thanks to sales from both retail and digital versions.

Said Koch Media CEO Klemens Kundratitz:

"While others focus on ever-increasing development budgets and driving brand messages via ballooning marketing expenditures, Deep Silver stands for hitting the zeitgeist, innovation and fresh gameplay. Dead Island has an incredibly active and enthusiastic community, and we are thrilled to welcome the five millionth player to the world of Banoi. This once again proves that venturing into new waters in terms of games publishing does matter for success and that even at the end of a console cycle new IPs can be created and nurtured into lasting franchises."

Koch International Commercial Director Menno van der Bil added that the "continued success of Dead Island has proven that we're on the right track with our overall IP strategy for Deep Silver." The follow-up effort, Dead Island Riptide , is slated to focus on co-op gameplay and will hit store shelves in North America on April 23. Who's up for more zombie huntin'?

Dead Island Reaches 3 Million Shipped

Although the game had its fair share of problems, many gamers still found Dead Island wildly entertaining.

Many, many gamers. According to Game Informer , publisher Deep Silver has confirmed that they have now shipped 3 million copies of the zombie-slaying survival game since its September launch.

The advertising wasn't bad, and with decent critical acclaim and that intense, emotional promotional CG trailer that nobody can forget, Dead Island flew off store shelves. We don't have an exact sales number, but here's what Aubrey Norris, Deep Silver Manager of Marketing & PR said:

"Dead Island has sold very, very well over the holiday season and we are thrilled that it has sustained a robust level of sell-through since launch in September."

There have been rumors of both a sequel and a movie adaptation, although neither has been confirmed by the publisher. Right now, it seems Dead Island has done extremely well, and it just might be a hot holiday item, too. We definitely want to see another effort and provided Techland fixes a few issues, it could be a fantastic production.

Dead Island Hits 1 Million Shipped In Just A Few Days

Dead Island is a fun game. It isn't perfect but a whole lot of people have responded positively to the entertaining action/RPG hybrid.

Deep Silver has announced that Techland's zombie-slaying survival adventure with role-playing elements has shipped over 1 million copies in North America "in the first few days of availability." Furthermore, Dead Island occupies the #1 software slot in several global markets – including the UK and France – and it seems that ship number will reach 2 million before the end of this week.

Although we weren't as complimentary as other critics, Dead Island has managed to snag plenty of praise from reviewers and gamers worldwide. Featuring an in-depth style of first-person combat, a large, open environment, and a fair amount of creativity and customization, the game can definitely be addictive. Said Geoff Mulligan, Deep Silver COO:

"We’re thrilled at the retail reception Dead Island has achieved in its first few days. The critical ‘first week’ of game sales has been an enormous sales success for Deep Silver. We’re working quickly with our distribution partner in North America, Square Enix, to restock shelves as quickly as we can."

Square Enix CEO and president Mike Fischer added that with a million copies out there, it's nice to know "that the world is now more prepared than ever for what to do should a real zombie invasion ever threaten humanity." …yes, we assume he's joking. At any rate, it's nice to see Dead Island succeeding. Are you one of the many who picked it up?
