Mortal Kombat 1 Gets Cross-Play Feature In February

Back when Mortal Kombat 1 launched in May, there was plenty of post-launch content announced to be in the pipeline, from the star-studded season pass to the eventual release of crossplay support.

In an update video focused on the return of fighter Quan-Chi, Community Manager Tyler Lansdown let out that cross-play support between PS5, Xbox Series, and PC is coming out in a February update.

Alongside early access to Quan-Chi, which is now fully available as of December 21, a new Wi-Fi filter has been added that’ll allow players to accept or decline fights based on their opponent’s internet connection. Which feels like a must in the modern-day fighter scene.

Mortal Kombat 1 was nominated for Best Fighting at the Game Awards but ultimately lost out to long-running fighting rival Street Fighter 6. Still both games launched with plenty of high praise from critics and fans.

The update in February is likely to be one of many updates the game will receive, as game director Ed Boon revealed in a panel at Brazilian event CCXP23. In the event (via VGC), Boon confirmed that the game would receive a second part to its story mode alongside cementing that the studio will be committing support for the game for even longer than Mortal Kombat 11 received.

Mortal Kombat 1 Cross-Play Will Come Post-Launch

Mortal Kombat 1

Mortal Kombat 1, the confusingly named latest entry to long-running franchise, won’t come bundled in with cross-play at launch. Instead, it will be something added at a later date.

The news was revealed on X, and pretty quickly, fans weren’t happy. It’s somewhat understandable, not only is the console player base of MK itself more fragmented, but also a good chunk of other fighters featured cross-play out the gate like Street Fighter 6 and even MK1’s precursor, MK11. The upcoming Tekken 8 will also feature cross-play, so this news certainly hasn’t done the new entry any favors.

In contrast, though, some note that Mortal Kombat is a widely popular fighter and that just because it seems the player base is fragmented, doesn’t mean that it actually is, and there’s likely going to be plenty of players online regardless of your platform of choice. To mitigate the backlash, NetherRealm Studios assured players that it’s working hard to bring the feature to life.

Borderlands 3 Omits PlayStation From Cross-Play

Borderlands 3

Borderlands 3 (read our review here) cross-play is live now and while that’s simply fantastic for those wanting to play with your friends across other systems, some will still have troubles. For one reason or another, Gearbox opted to omit PlayStation from the update.

This this decision shouldn’t be too shocking considering Sony’s past and while it sounds like they’re trying to rectify that, it seems the memo wasn’t passed on to Gearbox. Leaving PlayStation out certainly isn’t new information as Randy Pitchford has already said they would back in May.

That said, maybe this is going to be fixed down the line, perhaps Gearbox will release a new patch including cross-play with PS4 and PS5 players, but we wouldn’t hold our breath.

While the official reason is never really mentioned, it could be due to Sony’s reported compensation they require for cross-play. Something only they do.

Sony Now Wants More Cross-Play Games

Cross-play

We don’t have to look that far back to remember when Sony was slow to adopt cross-play with other consoles. The Japanese giant was the last console to accept the model, with Xbox and Nintendo willing to play ball decently quick.

As of late, however, Sony has softened up to the idea and has even gone on record to now claim to support the venture. While speaking with Axios, Jim Ryan said PlayStation supports and encourages cross-play.

He even said the number of games using cross-play features will continue to grow.

To be fair, though, Sony wasn’t really that against the cross-play aspect when it came to PC, having shimmered some level of support in the PS3 and PS2 eras.

What do you think? Is this a huge step in the right direction? Tell us below!

Bethesda Knows Fans Want Cross-Play In The Elder Scrolls Online

In a Wccftech interview, Bethesda has revealed they are aware their fanbase wants cross-play in The Elder Scrolls Online. This isn’t in the cards for them it seems, but they aren’t verbally against the idea either.

I figured that’s where that was going to go. We know this is kind of what players want. And we are starting to see more and more announcements about it. We don’t have anything on the roadmap currently, but we’re aware.

While this is telling of the immediate time right now, with them trying to fix their wrongs for Fallout 76, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility they may reconsider later on down the line.

Bethesda has had their blunders following the release, and flop, of the online-only Fallout 76, but they have at least shown signs of trying to make peace. For example, their – albeit late – update coming later this year that will entirely overhaul the game with human NPCs and a new story.

The Elder Scrolls Online brings you into the world of Tamriel and lets you and your friends roam around various areas, fight creatures, and search through dungeons. You can play it on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Fornite Cross-Play Beta starting on PS4 Today

Earlier this year, when Fortnite became available on Nintendo Switch, Sony were in the firing line of the gaming community over their contentious policy on cross-play gaming restrictions with other platforms.

The issue arose when users who had associated their Epic Games accounts with their PlayStation Network accounts found out that they couldn’t use that same Epic Games account on other platforms, forcing users to create a new account therefore leaving behind purchases they had made for in-game items and character progression, basically forcing PlayStation users to start all over again if they wanted to play on other platforms.

This wasn’t the first time Sony had been called out for it’s cross-play restrictions. Psyonix. the developers behind the game Rocket League, had been vocal about being ready to go at the press of a button to have their game available to all players across all platforms playing together and that the only thing stopping it from happening was Sony. Todd Howard from Bethesda also had expressed his desire to have their games, namely Fallout 76 and Elder Scrolls Legends, work across all platforms so as to not split the community.

So after months of pressure mounting on Sony to come up with a solution that benefited everyone involved, gamers, developers and Sony themselves, starting from today Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) unveiled their path towards supporting cross-platform features for select third party content.

The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems. We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.

As this is only rolling out today, it’s too soon to be able to say how well it’s implemented but it’s at least a step in the right direction.
