The Last Of Us Online Cancelation “Made Some Heads Roll”

The Last of Us Factions

Up until December 2023, by all accounts, The Last of Us Online was still in development, it just hitting some roadblocks along the way, mostly spurred on by Bungie, which has its own issues right now. Now, though, we got some details about the aftermath of its demise and how it led to some heads rolling.

During Friends Per Second, industry journalist Jason Schrier talked about the Bungie layoffs and Sony’s push forward into the live service market, noting it as “trend chasing.” Indeed, most of Sony’s live service endeavors have not, to put it lightly, not been fruitful, with its upcoming attempt, Firewalk’s Concord, not looking too promising that it will stand out among the rest of the hero shooter live service games.

It’s a good thing that Naughty Dog avoided the dreaded live service pit, but the cancelation “made some heads roll” at Sony.

PlayStation Exclusive WiLD Officially No Longer In Active Development

After a lot of speculation following a hiring spree not long after its chief project was reportedly canned, we can now confidently say WiLD is no longer in active development. The PS4 exclusive survival title developed by Wild Sheep Studio was stuck in Development Hell for the better part of a decade.

On Twitter, studio creative director Steven ter Heide confirmed what many had already anticipated — the game is no longer in development. While there’s something to be said about it only not being active development, we can read between the lines, clearly it doesn’t want to admit the game is canned, but it no longer wants to be known as the “WiLD” studio.

It seems like the studio is definitely trying its hardest to distance itself from the project. At this time, very little is known about Wild Sheep’s new venture.

Kohl’s Lists PS5 For Sale, Canceling Orders Already

Kohl's

Tons of PlayStation fans, who have yet to upgrade to the new generation, flocked to Kohl’s website as it listed a PS5 bundled with Spider-Man: Miles Morales and an extra controller as an item to purchase. While that itself isn’t a problem and there are most likely cases of people netting themselves the console from the company, others aren’t so lucky.

It appears that users, a meager day after ordering their PS5, are starting to get a disastrous email – a cancelation email. Shared by a user on Reddit and echoed by several people on Twitter, it seems the only logical reason is the largest department store in the US simply under-estimated the number of people getting the console from it and ran out of stock.

It’s already happened.

It’s too bad that this happened, but on the kind of bright side, if you earned Kohl’s Cash from the purchase, it’s yours to keep and you can put it towards another purchase, that is if you were eligible, to begin with.

PSX Extreme has reached out to Kohl’s for comment and will update this post if we hear back.

What do you think? Were you one of the unfortunate people who bought from Kohl’s? Tell us below!

E3 2020 Officially Canceled Due to Coronavirus

E3 2020

As with many events recently, the ESA has announced the cancellation of E3 2020. Concerns of the COVID-19 virus have been growing all week and many scheduled events have been canceled and/or postponed. Not too long ago GDC was postponed as well. So for the first time since its inception in 95, we won’t be getting an E3. Which is a pretty big bummer for many people, both fans and developers alike. The decision wasn’t made lightly and the safety of everyone involved was their main concern.

After careful consultation with our member companies regarding the health and safety of everyone in our industry – our fans, our employees, our exhibitors, and our longtime E3 partners – we have made the difficult decision to cancel E3 2020, scheduled for June 9-11 in Los Angeles.

Following increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 virus, we felt this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation. We are very disappointed that we are unable to hold this event for our fans and supporters. But we know it’s the right decision based on the information we have today.

All is not lost though. The ESA might be able to still bring E3 to the community, albeit in a different format. They are looking into ways to make E3 announcements through some sort of online experience. Whether that’s something like a Nintendo Direct or State of Play remains to be announced at a later date. Other companies have already jumped onto that ship as well. With both Ubisoft and Microsoft (among others) announcing a showcase of their own.

If there was any kind of silver lining to this situation, it’s that this might just give the ESA a chance to start evolving E3. Companies have been straying away from the big show for a while now, with Sony backing out entirely this year. Industry veteran Geoff Keighley also backed out of the event for the first time. E3 has been a flagship event for gamers and developers for a long time but the ESA has been a bit resistant to changing with the times.  This could be their chance to start anew.

Either way, this cancellation should help keep more people safe. It’s definitely been an interesting year so far. Hopefully this doesn’t delay anything else, such as the launch of the PlayStation 5. Speaking of which, Sony has been awfully quiet lately.
