Analysis: Black Ops III PS4 Outperforms Xbox One Version

It seems most big multiplatform titles this generation fare better on Sony's console.

Earlier this week, a Digital Foundry analysis found that Fallout 4 performed better on PlayStation 4 . Now, they come to a similar conclusion for the recently released Call of Duty: Black Ops III .

Their latest technical analysis proves the PS4 version features better resolution and frame rate when compared to its Xbox One counterpart. While both systems could manage 1080p during cut-scenes, only PS4 maintained that native resolution during gameplay, while Xbox One dropped to 900p. Furthermore, the report finds that Microsoft's console rarely holds that 900p.

"The Xbox One release possesses a consistent blurry appearance when the action really kicks in: fine details are frequently smudged over, while geometry edges appear rough and fuzzy. It's a substantial downgrade over last year's Advanced Warfare, where Sledgehammer stayed locked at a 1360×1080 resolution during the more demanding scenes."

In terms of frame rate, both versions have difficulty maintaining the goal of 60 fps but PS4 once again has the advantage, albeit a slight one: Digital Foundry says the PS4 version averages 51fps while the Xbox One version comes in at 49fps. In general:

"Performance ranges from 40-55fps and seem highly variable in motion, leading to inconsistent controller response and a stutter to motion we don't usually associate with the series."

Call of Duty: Black Ops III is now available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
