Beyond Good And Evil Coming To PS4, PS5

Beyond Good and Evil PS5

PS2-era action-adventure, Beyond Good and Evil, looks like its making its way to current and previous-gen hardware. This would make the first we’ve seen of the original since its HD version in 2011 for the PS3.

X user MACOS380 spotted an ESRB rating for Beyond Good and Evil 20th Anniversary Edition. PSX Extreme was able to find the listing on the official website. From the looks of it, it’ll be rated E10+.

It seems like we’ll see a remake or remaster of the original Beyond Good and Evil before we see its actual sequel, which was teased in 2008 before being revealed in 2017. Now, though, it’s stuck in Development Hell and has gone on to set a new record of over 15 years in the development phase. Hopefully releasing the original will bring a new wave of interest to the sequel and encourage Ubisoft to push the game forward… hopefully in the right direction.

What do you think? Are you excited to see what Ubisoft has in store for Beyond Good and Evil’s 20th anniversary? Let us know below!

Beyond Good And Evil 2 Sheds Managing Director Amid Labor Investigation

Beyond Good and Evil 2

Ubisoft Montpellier is facing another shakeup as the studio sheds Beyond Good and Evil 2’s managing director amid a labor investigation. A large portion of its developers are facing burnout and going through their sick leave, leading to the investigation.

Kotaku reports that the Inspection du Travail has opened an investigation into the Montpellier-based studio based on the unprecedented dozens of burnout and sick leave staff levels. It was also revealed that Ubi vet, Guillaume Carmona, the managing director, would be leaving the company for an undisclosed reason.

This isn’t the first time the Beyond Good and Evil 2 developer faced a labor investigation. Last December, it faced another large number of staff taking time off, and while some came back to the studio, others left, sparking a check-in by the authorities.

It’s worth noting that the project has had a recent shakeup that saw senior creative director Jean-Marc Geffroy off the project and the promotion of Emile Morel, who served as the game’s associate director. Charles Gaudron became its new game director after Benjamin Dumaz left Ubisoft after 14 years to join the indie game studio, Build A Rocket Boy.

It doesn’t quite make much difference as Kotaku’s sources retain that the team still can’t figure out what to do with BG&E2 as it beats out Duke Nukem Forever’s Development Hell record last year.

Beyond Good And Evil 2 Now In “Early Development”

Beyond Good and Evil 2

Despite constant reassurances from Ubisoft, Beyond Good and Evil 2 appears to be encroaching on vaporware territory. The game has been in Development Hell for the last 15 years and there’s still no signs of its release on the horizon.

A report has surfaced from Insider Gaming that points to the game being in early development. Per insiders, it sounds like the game was rebuilt and no longer is using the style the 2018 pre-alpha build showed. Pictures shared to the outlet confirmed the game was using low-quality assets during its latest round of playtesting over the course of the summer.

If 15 years sounds like a long time, that’s because it is. As of this year, Beyond Good and Evil 2 overtook Duke Nukem Forever as the long in-development game. It also shows a twinge of Agent, which was revealed by Rockstar Games, but nothing’s come since. We can assume that game’s been canned even if Rockstar hasn’t confirmed that as the case.

It’s hard to come to that conclusion in Ubisoft’s case since they assure fans and investors that progression is being made in its development. At this point, they need to remake the original for new fans to see… but please finish the new one before getting sidetracked.

Beyond Good & Evil Trademark Renewed, But Don’t Get Excited

Yeah, I know.

You're tired of seeing this kinda faux news articles concerning Beyond Good & Evil 2 . We've been hearing about it for nearly 7 years and so far, all we have is the ongoing promise of creator Michel Ancel. And we've got the same damn screenshot from the same damn 2009 teaser trailer, which I just refuse to post again.

But hey, if there's even the slightest chance for optimism, I'll take it.

As discovered by DualShockers , there's a new April listing for "Beyond Good & Evil" in the European Union Intellectual Property Office database, and this trademark covers video games and other things as well. Of course, this doesn't mean a new announcement is inevitable; it could just mean Ubisoft is re-securing its right to the IP. Even so, it's not uncommon for official news to arrive shortly after the filing (or re-filing) of a trademark.

Maybe at long last we'll see the long-anticipated sequel at E3 this year. Back in January, Ancel once again said the follow-up title is still coming , though as usual, he offered no details. 'sigh' Feels a lot like The Last Guardian at times, doesn't it?

I'll just recommend Beyond Good & Evil HD again.

Ancel Still Claims A Beyond Good & Evil Sequel Is Coming

Yes, it's still happening.

So says director Michel Ancel, anyway. Ever since Beyond Good & Evil 2 was announced way back in 2008, fans of the original have been waiting not-so-patiently for more news.

And as each year rolls by, Ancel claims the project is still in the works. Of course, as we're going on close to 8 years here, that promise starts to wear a little thin… But in a recent episode of Devs Play (a series hosted by renowned designer Tim Schafer; see it below), the classic BG&E was up for sampling and toward the end of the episode, Schafer asked Ancel if he was in the headspace of the game because he was making a sequel. The reply:

"Yeah, but it's difficult because it's hard for me to do the same kind of game two times. I always want to do something different."

Well, okay. What does that mean, exactly? It's a confirmation that the sequel is still in development, apparently, but doesn't it also imply that fans can expect something very different when it finally arrives? And when are we going to hear and see more? Previously, Ancel said BG&E2 had gotten "too big for this console period" and at the time, he was referring to the PS3/Xbox 360 era.

If you never had the pleasure of the original, you should definitely try Beyond Good & Evil HD ; this adventure has held up pretty well over time.
