Sometimes, it's easy to forget that God of War is one of the most revered, acclaimed and beloved franchises in video game history.
It's even easier to forget after last year's God of War: Ascension fell a little shy of expectations. While still a downright great action game, it was the first series entry (fantastic PSP installments included) that wasn't worthy of an elite 9+ review score. At least, in our estimation and the estimations of many other critics and gamers.
So, what direction will this series take in the new generation? The IP is simply too important to the PlayStation brand to abandon; that won't happen. However, Sony Santa Monica may have to reboot or at least reinvent the franchise. We've been hearing rumors about a new setting and even a new protagonist, mostly because the team feels they've done everything they can do with Kratos. That's mostly speculation, though; inferences drawn from statements made in various interviews. There's really no knowing for sure what the next GoW title will be.
What do you think? Will they bring Kratos back? He's synonymous with the title now; ditching him would almost be like ditching Snake in Metal Gear Solid . Then again, maybe it has to be done in order to infuse the franchise with new-found freshness. Or, perhaps they can just drop Kratos into a different era/setting. A time-traveling Kratos! Okay, that's a little corny but hey, just spit-balling here. Ideas?
