There was a time when Final Fantasy was exclusive to the PlayStation brand.

Of course, there was also a time when the franchise was exclusive to Nintendo platforms. Things change. But could it be possible that after going multiplatform, Square Enix had initially planned to bring Final Fantasy XV only to the PlayStation 4…? Perhaps.

It seems this idea was on the table, or so says industry insider Ahsan Rasheed, better known in gaming circles as "Thuway." In a recent Tweet , Rasheed said that according to his sources, FFXV began its life as a PS4 exclusive:

"FFXV PS4 Exclusivity, even to this day, some insiders claim, was a thing; and these insiders are about as trustworthy as they come."

He added that maybe Sony didn't want to pay for exclusivity, although that's only his own theory. It's possible, though, as Sony has made it a corporate policy not to pay for exclusives, which is in stark contrast to their competitor's policy (as we all know by now). Don't forget that FFXV was Final Fantasy Versus XIII at one point, which was supposed to be exclusive to the PS3. Maybe they figured that exclusivity would carry over to the PS4?

Well, whatever. If it isn't exclusive anymore, so what? Not like it's recognizable to long-time franchise fans.

It's probably wise of Sony not to pay for exclusivity on Final Fantasy XV. As much as fans are still looking forward to its release (hoping that it'll redeem the series from the XIII debacle), the series itself no longer holds as much clout as it did in the PS1 and PS2 eras. Square-Enix has arguably ruined the series and even its most loyal fans no longer have as much faith in it. So why pay for exclusivity? Besides, it'll still be on a PlayStation console and the franchise itself is still pretty much associated to PS. Sony's money is better off going to its own internal development studios.

There is no reason to have it exclusive now. Since Square Enix has raped, trafficked, and turned out Final Fantasy as a meth head whore turning DLC tricks on the street the brand is so toxic that it won't be able to be successful on one platform anymore. Hell it can't even hit its PS2 exclusive sales numbers now that it is multiplat.

Sometimes you like to brag about your exclusives, this one wouldn't meet that requirement. It's been in either development hell or frozen carbonite for too long now and the action game that will be excreted from it some time in the next 3-4 years won't be much to argue over who wants to own it.

Square-Enix sucks. Square was and always will be the best time they ever had.

If S-E is sure that the extra 2M sales (if they're lucky) that they get from putting on the XBO is worthwhile, then why the hell not? I'm reasonably certain that everyone knows that the lion's share of the sales will be on the PS4, anyway. I mean FFXIII-2 sold more on the PS3 than XIII did on the 360. That's a pretty clear indication of where the fanbase is, I'd say.

FF XIII-2 sold more on the PS3 that FF XIII did on the 360? Wow, I didn't know that. Do you have a link for this one, buddy? I haven't really tracked FF XIII after finishing the game and felt extremely underwhelmed so this bit flew below my radar.

But anyway, it is really telling if true. I guess there was no doubt about that to begin with, but with how much Microsoft and the Xbox fans made a big deal about it since it went multiplatform, you would've expected the main game to at least sell more on the 360 than the much-unwanted sequel on the PS3. Really interesting…

VGChartz. I know it's not the most reliable source, but it's the only one I know that tries to track worldwide sales and it seems to be pretty close to the mark, in general, when compared the figures that are released by the publishers at investor calls and such.

Even if they're not entirely accurate, you'd expect them to be consistently wrong, yeah?

I'll add this. In January of 2013, Kitase said that the subseries has sold a total of 9.7 million units, with 6.6M of those attributed to XIII (http://wayback.archive.org/web/20130120185904/http://penny-arcade.com/report/editorial-article/lightning-returns-final-fantasy-xiiis-creators-justify-a-third-game-in-a-se). VGChartz lists it with 7.09M with a split that runs 5.07M to 2.02M. Going by Kitase's figures, that means 3.1M go to XIII-2, with VGC listing 3.15M, split as 2.47M:0.68M.

I'm sure I could dig up more if necessary. ūüėČ

Considering how disorganized SE is I suppose it's possible that some of their own employees never got the memo about XIII going multiplatform until just recently.

I used to care if FF is PS exclusive or not, but not anymore.

I bought the PS3 ONLY because FF13 was exclusive. When it went multiplat…that slap in the face hurt like hell. Decided to speak with my wallet. I passed on 13 and it's spin-off's. Looks like I didn't miss much either way. Series ended at 12 for me.

Even if they claimed it to be exclusive for PS4, I'm sure they'll bust another square-enix move.

Sony did the right thing, SE has lose their minds and they become a fanboy of themselves!, the best Final Fantasy they gonna release this year was a ps2 game.

PS4 exclusive or not, it's NOT on PS3 so who cares?

Well FFXV was originally FF versus XIII as a PS3 exclusive. When they changed development to next-gen, it made sense to keep it exclusive to PS4. Good call on Sony to bypass exclusive rights to it though. I'm not positive it'll do so well once released…
