Titles like Gran Turismo and Forza always go for unparalleled realism. But at least in terms of visual quality, perhaps there will be a new front-runner in 2014.

Slightly Mad Studios has released 60 stunning new screenshots for their next-gen title, Project Cars . These pics show off some of the game's hottest cars, and the environments in which they'll be placed.

The cool part is that although these images may look doctored or touched up in some way, the studio promises they've been pulled directly from the game:

"As usual, all shots show purely in-game footage that has not been made in any special photo mode, using no post-processing or filters that aren't available during the actual gameplay. What you see below is what you experience while driving!"

Project Cars is slated to release for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U and PC in fall 2014, although the developer didn't say which platform these screenshots came from. By the way, if you're wondering, Slightly Mad Studios does have a racing history; they've produced Need for Speed: Shift and Shift 2: Unleashed . Maybe the pics were taken from the game but I'm having a hard time believing what I'm seeing…

I remember when Gran Turismo 3 first came out I had my friend over and I was showing him it while saying something like, "yah, now that they got cars photo realistic they just need to get people photorealistic and we're there"

yah i was an idiot =p

Lol, I'm guilty on that end too. At the time, I couldn't imagine how much better it could possibly look. What's funny though is that my friends and I agreed!.. so I don't feel too foolish haha.

Graphics are very impressive, no doubt about that. Regardless, I'll wait on the gameplay. If it's solid, I may consider purchasing it.

More car games? jeez. Why can't we get this many RPGs?

Why can't we have both, so everyone's happy?

While I take offense to your "only you should be happy" statement. 😉 In your defense you did say why can't there be this many RPGs not that there shouldn't be any less car games.

I do agree with JROD. No reason we can't or shouldn't have more of both.

Looking great. They only thing that turns me off on this game is that you won't be able to buy and collect cars (unless they've changed their minds on that since last time I checked). That's a big part of my enjoyment of racing games, but oh well, if the physics are great I'll give it a try.

Deffo looks the goods (although those shots are most likely high-end PC, although there's a decent chance they should be able to get close to that on PS4). I didn't have a particularly good experience with Shift 2 though, the driving model was out of whack something fierce, but the high level of community involvement here should keep them honest when it comes to these kind of things.

Yeah, this game looks decent, but I'm sure GT7 will blow this out of the water in 2015.

Still might get the game if the physics are worth a damn.

Looking at the environments, I don't see how it looks anything more special than DriveClub so far. I give DriveClub the one up in this regard. Looking at the cars, it doesn't look that much more detailed than GT6 Premiums (I've taken lots of pics that can replicate it), or Forza 5. I have taken pictures that can closely replicate those screenshots in GT6 (example in my new avatar with me racing against the Z8). I'm aware that in GT6, I'm using post processing photo mode, but for next gen, I believe it can run real time as they are doing here, which I'm pretty sure are from high end PCs.

What amazes me are the particle effects like mildew/raindrops on the cars, the lighting and reflections, and that grass lol.

Other than that it looks ok and nothing shocking. I've yet to try the physics. If we go by their track record from the Shift series, then it would be garbage imo. I hope not, because this game looks to have serious potential and the sounds are incredible.

GT7 will be an exclusive, as will DriveClub. This game will be multiplat. Unless they optimize the PS4 as much as they can and not resort to going on par with Xbone's version, there's no reason that this game should outperform GT7 on consoles.

Been playing this for almost a year now. Easily one of the most realistic driving games on the market.

no the screens are not doced, ive been playing this for a while now and it really does look that good.
gets a little boring after a while though, you can only drive around in a circle staring at the same things for so long before you get bored!
really wish these guys would take their expertise into creating a open world racing sim, instead of just boring sterile tracks.
think how cool something like NFS most wanted would be with the attention to detail, and sim gameplay of this.
or even better, they team up with bigbear and use their soft body physics tech for the model and damage system.

looks wise though, just for the amazing detail in the cars, or car, still nothing touches the nvidia garage tech demo!
ok ok its not a game, but a tech demo, but jesus tap dancing christ look at that chrome!
look at the reflection in the paint work!
look at the reflection of the car in the glass of the building next to it!
ray tracing is da bomb!

Coming from a racing game fanatic, it'd be nice if "Driver AI" could rank up there with graphical quality. As great as GT always looks (as an example) it's always had the stupidest AI on the market. How about giving me 20 different driver personalities instead of 2000 cars?
Oh, and now that it's 2014 could we drop the Rubberband AI also?
