This question has been bothering me ever since the game was announced.

I simply can't decide if my anticipation for The Order: 1886 should be sky-high, or if I should remain reserved and perhaps even skeptical. This isn't a straightforward case.

Firstly, the developer: Ready at Dawn has proven themselves to be a very competent developer, delivering multiple God of War titles for the PSP and the PS3. They also handled the Wii port of the stellar Okami . It's not like this studio is filled with wide-eyed rookies, so why should we be even remotely skeptical? Well, perhaps because in the realm of big-budget blockbuster AAA titles, this team is not a proven commodity. The Order: 1886 is a very different project to tackle, despite the awesomeness of some of those GoW titles for the PSP. They were fantastic.

Secondly, the details we've heard so far are really encouraging…perhaps too encouraging. It seems as if the studio's ambition level for this project is through the roof. On the one hand, that's great; I love great ambition of all kinds, and gamers are the ones who typically benefit from such effort. But when you stretch yourself thin, when you tackle too many large concepts, the entire presentation begins to suffer. We've seen examples of this in the past, and it almost seems as if The Order is trying too hard in too many areas. Will we really get a compelling narrative, great characters, memorable setting, and a unique gameplay mechanic that successfully melds third-person shooting and innovative melee combat?

To that, I can only say, "maybe."

Thirdly and lastly, we're talking about a new IP. That, in and of itself, is always risky. They're absolutely necessary for the sake of freshness in this industry, but there's a reason why they're risky; they, much like the developers in this case, are not proven. Nailing a debut IP is tough to do, especially during the first year of a new console's reign. New hardware, new challenges and all that. Anyway, I'm just wondering where, on a scale of 1-10, our anticipation level should be for this promising game. I'm gonna be conservative and sit around a 6.

I'd say 7 for me.

I give it an 8 or 9 in the grounds it is a new IP, and the theme is to my liking. Its early stages but I have high hopes. I do not expect the best of the best of the best. Not at first, but a decent new introduction to a new game franchise. It has the makings of that.

I would not mind a bit more reveal of story and gameplay, but I definitely do not want toooo much of a reveal. Surprises would be nice. It would definitely push me to a PS4 purchase.

That all said, I get the feeling this game maybe be delayed for the holidays or early 2015. I am hopefully wrong, but…

Keep playing!

All good points, but let's not forget that this has been in development since before Ghost of Sparta launched, which means that it will be at least four years, if it drops towards the end of next year as it is widely expected to. And it's a collaborated development with Sony Santa Monica, a studio that knows how to make good games.
That being said, it's always best to curb your enthusiasm. It still seems the best game currently gaining hype in terms of PS exclusives, though I daresay that will change as soon as deets on Uncharted and the games from Santa Monica and Media Molecule start to drop. Set it to 4 and ramp it up when we start seeing actual footage.

I wouldn't be surprised if Naughty Dog wasn't helping on this too since Ready at Dawn was established by ND guys.

After Shadow Fall and Knack, I wouldn't expect this game to rack in high scores.

Why not?

I don't believe in having low expectations just because it's a new IP. If developers fail to deliver good, new IPs we get stuck with the same old, same old every year. It's a new a gen and within the first couple years of a new gen is usually when new IPs thrive. So I'm going to go with high expectations (I'd put my anticipation at 8/10) and hope for the best. Of course the developers could end up not delivering, and if that's the case, reviews will reflect it.

I agree. No reason for low expectations if it is from a renowned developer.

Anything from, say, BioWare will make my expectations sky high regardless of being new or old IP.
New/unknown devs though, now that's cause for reservations.

I've found that new IPs are the best place to be optimistic. The new ones last gen like Dishonored, Bioshock, Uncharted, Resistance, Heavy Rain, L.A. Noire, Heavenly Sword etc were all better than the big name sequels to me.

Beamboom: Ready at Dawn is hardly "renowned," and certainly not on the same level as BioWare. That's part of my point.

not to mention this industry has a history of taking a out house and marketing it as the taj mahall, so a little cautions probably not such a bad idea.
whether they deliver on what they promised, and on what we imagine, is a whole other kettle of fish.
but the fact still remains that if GoW GoS is the result of giving them a PSP, than i cant wait to see what the result is when you give them a ps4!
kinda makes me wish that they were working on a GOW for the vita though instead of this, being how awesome GoS and even CoO was.

so for anticipation probably a 9.
i cant think of anything that will make me more excited than this!
ok, well maybe portal 3, half life 3, doom 4, a new crash bandicoot game, a new spyro game, 8 days getting resurrected, the getaway 3 getting resurrected, a new medievil game, ect, ect, but neither of those are ever going to happen so this will have to do.

I'm looking forward to it but I'm trying to keep my excitement in check which isn't a bad policy, in general. Keep your expectations low! If it turns out to be good then great but if it doesn't then you won't have to face disappointment.

For me it's far, far too early to feel either way. I need to see some gameplay for me to get excited about. I've been around too long to be excited about lofty promises and marketing speeches.

Oh, and 10. This franchise will shock the world in much the same way The Last of Us did (but as action not drama). It's a collaberative effort from first party people with brand new physics and next gen ideals. I don't expect it to pull a Remember Me.

I totally agree. It looks like this game is shaping up pretty good. This game will give the industry something to talk about… I hope.

That was the only game at E3 that really piqued my interest, because it looks DIFFERENT – not the same exact junk you've been playing for 7 years now with prettier graphics and new particle effects like almost everything else at the show.

I'm optimistic about it, but I doubt I'll have a PS4 by the time it comes out anyway so whatever. Would be nice to play when I do get one though.
