Rumors are always crazy fun, especially when they could potentially involve super huge news. Check it out:

These come courtesy of "Thuway," a source that has broken some facts ahead of time in the past. He's been busy at his Twitter page recently, and there are several points of interest.

The first involves the possibility of seeing Gran Turismo 7 relatively soon. Although GT6 just launched this month, we've heard from Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi that the next entry could be available in only "one or two years." Thuway's source seems to agree with this, as the GT7 launch should be some time in 2015. That's not entirely new but it's worth noting.

Then there's something particularly intriguing for all our long-time JRPG fans out there:

"I heard something about Sony's internal JRPG on PS4, but it's vague, and I'll leave it up to the original source to break it. He's around."

The PlayStation 4 could definitely use a great JRPG, and to have it developed by Sony is another bonus. Perhaps the old-school followers will finally get what they want; Square Enix may have ignored them for a decade, but Sony tends to actually listen to gamers. Should we expect some news on this project soon…?

Please, let it be a fully fledged title, and not just some niche digital only retro release. I'd love to see something with the impact like Skyrim. Something that makes people talk.

Yeah. It made no sense to try and test the jRPG waters with minimalist budgets. Let's do it right, this time.

Beam… you try FFXIV yet? The latest update added so damn much. There's just so much to do!

Not yet, Underdog, I'm currently staying in Tenerife on holiday, will not be back until closer to new years eve. But I will at least try to see if there's a trial available when i'm back in regular modus operandi again.

I look forward to it!

Oh please let it be true, and as Beam said a bigger budget game.

Legend of Dragoon 2 isn't totally impossible. Before support for Playstation All Stars Battle Royale was dropped, they had already started work on adding Dart as a character so they haven't forgotten the game.

PS4? Developed by Sony? JRPG? Legend of Dragoon confirmed.

As with any JRPG announcement, I can only get excited when I know what I am in for. If it fails to meet my expectations in the 'JRPG Hurdles' I will lose interest:
1. If the game features a generic Anime art design
2. If the game presents its story through the 'Visual Novel' design.
3. If it features more SRPG combat – Moving characters around on checkerboard.

… if a JRPG passes them setbacks I am willing to gain interest towards it.

If it is internally from Sony then it won't have those features. That type of stuff is for the much more niche, smaller and culture based Jap teams (something that the Tales team likes to reserve for optional Skits, hell even Persona likes it). No way a 'visual novel' would make it's way out there let alone being made by Sony. The Sony name itself is international even though this rumour specifically suggests a JRPG, they know where their values lie.

So I'm sorry but you don't have to worry about your distaste in such qualities coming into fruition in this game. Can't speculate on your No. 3 because it is possible but it won't be classic checkerboard like Tactics, Disgaea – it would be 3D if anything.

I don't remember the last Sony game that really sticks to a convention.

Though what I'd be happy with is what two other posters have said: Legend of Dragoon hehe 😀

Not to worry 🙂 I have very strict concessions for my RPG collection, so my rules will no doubt upset the anime lovers. I should state as always that if the art direction is distinctive like Nin No Kuni or Dragon Quest I am all for it. But if I think Temjin001 describes the problems I have with the generic anime designs below in his comment, I want none of that in my JRPGs.

What I'm afraid of is that it will sell terribly. I'm not sure big budget RPGs can sell anymore.

I personally wouldn't mind one, if the combat is real time.

This is coming from someone who was a huge JRPG fan back in the day. And I hate using individual information to base my opinion off of, but the 5 or 6 JRPG gamers that put me on to them back in the day don't really care for them anymore either.

It would pretty much have to busy Studio Japan, right? They've come through with some really good titles in the past though most of them have been pretty small, which isn't the most encouraging fact. On the other hand, they did assist in the development of Demon's Souls, White Knight Chronicles, Soul Sacrifice (it's a kind of RPG…) and now Deep Down, so they should know what is required to make a good JRPG.

Hope it's true. As for GT7… Yeah, that one I'm getting 🙂

Please just don't have it too strong with anime overtones. I like japanese games and all but the whole anime-look in jRPG's is usually a turn off. I want quality, finely detailed and produced cg work.

EDIT: and for more clarity. I don't want huge eyes, nub noses, and tiny whittle mouths, balloon breasts on youthful looking girls, with flat shaded bright colors defining it's overall aesthetic.

Haha, nice. I completely agree, there is nothing more of putting than what you described. I just cannot take such a character seriously. That has been the problem with the JRPG market this gen, most of them have been really obscure games like Time and Eternity or Hyperdimension Neptunia-alafarah… The JRPGs I love much like Final Fantasy never had such stupidity.

I feel a jRPG could never become a heavy weight again if it sticks to that stylization. It'll always be a subset of gamers who are also anime followers.

I know it seems hypocritical of me to say this as I'm currently playing and enjoying Xenogears, a very anime looking game, but the games back then were so crude looking graphically. they left so much to the imagination. Games like Final Fantasy, Lost Odyssey, and others managed to evolve the look of their games beyond the typically trappings of anime style presentations.
The only current jRPG that I feel okay with that has an anime look is Ni No Kuni. That's because Studio Gibli's look and feel isn't generic anime and the story tries to be youthful and lighthearted. It fits. I can do something like that for one or a few games but not the genre as a whole.

I don't get this "generic anime" stuff you guys are talking about. I watch anime and there really is no such thing (unless you count Western anime imitation), just many different styles with their own subtleties. Unless you're just saying you liked the smaller slit eyes of the 90s; just like anything else certain aspects go in and out of style.

FF has changed around, VII was big eyes and super deformed, VIII was realistic, IX was super deformed, X was more realistic. It's all still anime, even XIII.

Temjin001

Persona, Tales games, Hyperdimension and more are all part of the generic anime look. Games like Xenosaga, particularly episode 1, and Star Ocean have straddled it fairly closely but they at least managed to ditch the cell shaded look.

Now I know snobby anime buffs will decry any similarity between the franchises I've listed so if you don't see the generic similarities then don't worry about it. Just know some people are annoyed by this while others aren't.

I despise JRPGs by and large, but even I would buy this rumored game to help motivate Sony to churn out more internally developed JRPGs for those that want them.
