Typically, there are no extra consoles on launch day. There are almost never any available unless you've pre-ordered.

But Sony has said in the past that they've been "holding back" some PlayStation 4 units; in other words, they can't be pre-ordered and they'd be available for regular consumers on day one. In checking with retailers like GameStop, that does appear to be true.

Best Buy has stated that they prefer to see gamers who didn't pre-order at their midnight launch events, which obviously means they've got extras. And after talking to a few local GameStops, it seems they'll have some extra units, too. I couldn't get an exact number from any store (it was implied that they didn't know the exact extra count), but it seems that at least "some" PS4s will be available to those who didn't pre-order.

Of course, those will go on a first-come, first-served basis, so you had best get there pretty early. GameStop midnight launch events will begin at around 6 p.m., so maybe you should get there around then and grab your spot in line. The fact that there are any available at all is quite remarkable, I say. Historically, if you didn't pre-order when you had the chance, you could be out of luck for months .

Today when I called they said the same thing and they also told me that they couldn't tell me how many they had. Guess they thought I was planning a robbery or something lol JK it's obviously a policy.

Future Shop and Best Buy in Canada are saying that each location will have a minimum of 25 unreserved units with certain locations having 100 – 250 unreserved units.

I need a year or two before I or the PS4's library will be ready for a purchase =p

It's gonna be weird for me having it without any games.

Infamous your first?

I have the spoiled advantage of already having a computer that runs the raft of multiplats at better-than-PS4 settings. So for me, all the PS4 has got are exclusives. That's fine. That's what the PS3 has pretty much been for me over the last couple years, or so. They just need to start stacking up. I'm also in no hurry to start paying up PS+ subscription fees.

Yup, as you might have seen in the Killzone article I'm very excited about the NEON power 🙂

Since I'm done with PS3 gaming, I have no problem going to PS4 despite a lack of games I like. Knack and Killzone are my first choices and I might look into Black Flag as well. I do regret that I'm missing out on some 1st party PS3 games but I expect Gran Tursimo 6 to appear on PS4 at some point.

I can't even get caught up on my PS2 HD games. I'm closing in on Jak 2 though. Can't believe I'll have played through each game on that disc…
I do also want the ZOE HD collection. Just for ZOE2.
I also need the Ratchet Collection and to play through SotC. man. swamped.

Yeah I've got a ton of PS3 games to play so I'll be okay, but it's still gonna be a shiny thing.

Judging from the reviews for Knack this morning, I'll be waiting for a price drop. I thought it would be a 7-8 game but alas, it isn't. M-rated purchase it is.

…hhmmm the reviews coming in for PS4's marquee games don't look too strong.

EDIT: And KZ: SF? Heck, CoD Ghosts may be widely considered the better game.

Be careful about giving up on Knack. The reviews from GameSpot and Eurogamer that give it a 4 basically just say it's not next-gen. All reviews admit there's nothing wrong with it, and if you want simple platforming action, it's actually quite good.

Here's the Game Informer review, for example:

yah, thanks for that Ben. But looking at the 14 reviews from Metacritic it would appear Game Informer's review is the zenith on the spectrum… nearly a statistical outlier right now it would seem =p

but personally I haven't given up on it. i like platformers. i'll get it on the cheap some day.

Yeah, Tom McShea is known for his Internet hit-reviews. Greg Kasavin he isn't, though.

I am surprised to see someone like yourself take so much stock from critic reviews, Temjin.

Also, what the hell is wrong with KZ:SF? Saying COD Ghosts is better is just wrong man.

you don't chit-chat with the other gamer dudes there? you could wax philosophical about modern issues in pop gaming culture. Reminisce about the old days of Squaresoft turn-based gaming and hand drawn art video games and how everyone these days are twitch-junkie addicts who can't do nothing but shoot at stuff.

Well I only went to 1 midnight launch, and it was quiet as a mouse. Normally I like to engage strangers in all kinds of banter but it just FELT like I should keep to myself, the most I did was let a guy have a cigarette and traded a few words. I miss smoking.

All my games and accessories, I have them all!! Just need my console. Just 2 more days if you're going to the midnight launch!

hate it how manufactures do this, i mean you expect people to que out for hours, if not days, to then find out sorry we ran out of stock.
i remember going to the city years ago when the iphone 4 released, 3 days before launch there was already a que of campers setup to wait the next few days!
seriously!?
your going to sit out in the cold for 3 days straight just to get a f*cking phone!?
and not only that, your going to sit out in the cold for 3 days straight and not even know if there will be any stock left!?
as the saying goes, a fool and his cash are easily parted!
some people got too much time on their hands…………

I hope that the asian version of the ps4 comes here in the Philippines sooner, rather than later.. The US version of ps4 will cost around $700 or more, once it arrives here, due to taxes. The asian version ps4 or R3 will cost at around $420..

My condolences to your country folk that are experiencing tremendous hardship right now.

Not sure how wide spread the damage is across the country as most of the news reports are focusing on Tacloban City which appears to be totally devastated.

Save for Japan, I think Sony's Asian territories are supposed to have their release in mid-December. Not sure if the disaster will affect this date in the Philippines or not.

Question: What is the point of having pre-orders at all if you are going to reserve stock for the shelf?

Seriously what the hell.
