I haven't made up my mind yet.

For the most part, I'm no fan of midnight launches. They can really bring out the worst in people, and that always depresses me. I've never even been to one, primarily because I'm never that impatient to get a new game or even a new system. I suppose if they ever made a true Final Fantasy VII remake, I'd line up at midnight for that.

And I'm not as amped up about the PlayStation 4 as I've been for previous system launches. At the same time, it'd be kinda nice to get the console, all the games I have pre-ordered for it, the new controller, and the charging station that night. That way, you don't have to worry about braving the crowds during the day on Friday. Then again, will there be more people at the midnight launch…? I have a feeling there might be, 'cuz that's when all the die-hard gamers will be there.

It is technically a weeknight so perhaps there won't be quite as many people. No matter how hardcore you are, you do have to work, yes? Not everyone has the same schedule, and I understand that, but standing in line at midnight doesn't really appeal to everyone, either. Back in the day, there was no midnight launch for customers…just for employees. When working at EB for the PS2 launch, we all gathered at the store that night to grab our systems the minute it was legal to do so. I believe my receipt said I got mine at 12:07 a.m. I was proud of that.

That was pretty cool but these days…I dunno. I'm trying to summon the requisite motivation.

For the last gen, all I know is in the places I've lived, the length of lines far outweighed my patience. For the PS2 I waited about 3 and half hours in line, and that was fine. The Xbox 360 would've had me in line for no less than 12 hours while being in freezing weather. Just not worth it. From that moment on I ruled myself out of console launch lines.

Wait…three and a half hours DOESN'T outweigh your patience?

nope. I can handle that. When I have to start worrying about food and drink and going pee and stuff and not freezing, then yah, patience runs out pretty fast.

I remember going over 6 hours for a TV at Best Buy. Thinking back, I don't know how I went through it, but it was for my parents (I owe them), so I guess I was motivated or something. Anyway, there are definitely some harsh people, as well as pathetic cutters. The cold and bathroom breaks are definitely the two most annoying factors affecting my patience. I'm a really patient guy, but I will never line up ever again.

yah, I'm done too. When I was in my early twenties and valued my free time less I could burn a few hours doing nothing, but not anymore.

I pre-ordered my PS4 at least six months ago on Amazon. It should be waiting for me when I get home from work next Friday — perfect timing for the weekend. I have no qualms at all waiting that long. To quote a great Calvin and Hobbes poem: "Tomorrow's what I'm waiting for. But I can wait a little more."

I can't go 3 1/2 hours without peeing.

Temjin001

you have to plan it. like start drinking less several hours before getting into line.

it was close for me PS2 night. We had to stop at like a Denny's on the way home to run in and use their restroom.

EDIT:
Oh, and stay off of a lot sugar earlier in the day. The sugar increases glycogen levels in your body that causes higher water retention. So when the glycogen levels drop the body lets go of the water, making you have to pee more.

I don't have to. As soon as Sony started taking reserves, I grabbed one. Mine will be waiting for me at my favorite Gamestop.

Had I decided to get it at launch, I would've just ordered it from amazon. I can't stand midnight launches.

I had pre-ordered it from the big A but then lost interest and decided to cancel. But I am thinking about going to the midnight launch to see if I can get one. Here's hoping I can get one.

I'm too old to stay up that late 🙂

With no pre-order there's no way I'd risk going home empty handed. It'd be kind of interesting to have a look at the crowd though.

I ordered mine from Amazon, will be here on the 15th. They shipped the extra controller I ordered to me last week! Charged it up, haven't tried it on any games. I do like the new DS4. It also works with the DS3 charging cable.

The DualShock 4 is not compatible with the DualShock 3's cable. DualShock 4 uses USB micro-B, whereas DualShock 3 uses USB mini-B. The micro connector is thinner than the mini one, and so is the micro-B jack.

Hell yes I'm going to the midnight launch. I've only been to a few in the past, maybe 3, but everything has always been really civil and calm. I remember the last one I went to, we were all sharing PSNs so we could meet up online when we got home.

I'm probably not going to get the system until well into the new year. Decent backlog to jump into, still some ps3 games coming out, and I don't mind playing some of the ps3 versions of those cross-gens.

There are usually more people on midnight launches. But Ben, if you have the time, just do it.

I'd like to say though, that at my GameStop for the GTA V midnight launch, there was easily 200-250 people there. I was the very last person out because I waited in my car. It was like almost 3 am of I'm not mistaken.

I was surprised because there was other locations including a Walmart where people could of easily bought the game from.

I'm still deciding if I should go for the ps4 midnight launch. It's TBD. Because there will be so many people.

Im going. I was really excited just to pay it all off the other day and get my controller and Killzone. At least it won't be like waiting outside best buy for two days like I did for the ps3.

They usually open the doors up at 10 and let people come into my local gamestop to get in line too. Hopefully there won't be too many people there.

Future Shop isn't having a midnight launch for the PS4. All stores will open at 8 A.M. on the 15th. I'd rather go at daylight anyway. I already have a PS4 reserved. EB is having a midnight launch, though.

Interestingly, Future Shop will have the Xbone available at midnight the following week. I might go over and check out the lines, weather permitting.

Simcoe

I wonder if MS has asked/paid for stores to open for the midnight release, so that media will report on such line-up (free publicity). For the PS4 Best Buy (Canada) and Future Shop have announced that each store will be receiving at least 25 (non-reserved) consoles that will be available to the general public. They haven't said yet how many non-reserved units of the X1 they'll be receiving for the following week.

I haven't seen any other information regarding EB Games or other retailers. I could ask my preferred gaming store, Microplay, how many extra they ordered in. I know they had to have their launch day orders for hardware into Sony for October 10/11th.

Brighat

Wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft would do such a thing.

Kryten1029a

If they had enough units ordered to justify it then they'd open. There wouldn't be any need to pay them. Based on the interest in the PS4, I would say that they'll open for that.

Still, I wasn't going to line-up in the cold night next week. I can wait for the cold morning.

I did line up on Boxing Day at FS for the PS3 160 GB Slim and 24' Sony 3D T.V. in 2012 at 6 A.M. That was a good deal for $300. I was the first person to checkout. In and out for me. If they have the new NSMBU Wii U bundle for $200 or less on Boxing Day, I'll get up for 6 again regardless of the conditions.

Simcoe

I remember that deal! Contemplated the 3D tv too, but went in the day after Boxing Day to get the $200 PS3 (to replaced my launch phatty). The only reason I'd line up (early/late) in the cold are for deals. Not going to line-up just to get a game I pre-ordered a few hours early.

I'm going to be at my local Gamestop for their midnight. Had my system reserved the day they announced the price. Killzone and BF4 are my first two titles and will most definitely check out Contrast and Warframe. Weekend is locked tight for all the PS4 goodness.

oh god no!
ques would be out the door and around the block, and once i finally did get the thing id be too tempted to stay up and play it instead of going to bed.
no thanks i can wait till i finish work and not have to worry about massive ques, and shrieking around every 2 seconds when i hear footsteps.
we all remember all the assaults that happened at the ps3s launch………

speaking of launch though i was at a friends house yesterday and EB rang him asking if he wanted to move his preorder to the bundle.
seriously!?
$ony announces the bundle for the rest of the world, than months later, and only 3 weeks till launch, they FINALLY decide to announce it for us?
typical!
surprisingly its not going to be available on launch either estimate is just before chrissy.
WTF!?
all the contents are going to be available on launch, so why not just use those for the bundle?
why do you have to wait till chrissy if you want the bundle?
especially that this is not extra stock its taken out of the launch day preorders taken before june 6.
so why force people to wait till chrissy if they want the bundle, when they could buy each item separately a month earlier?
looks like $ony is taking advantage of the impatient ones, forcing them to buy each item individually if they want it at launch.
why am i not surprised?

What bundle? I haven't heard of any bundles. The only bundles I think I've heard about have been in the Europe. Did any of these bundles result in any actual savings? If not, then what is the point!?

Ah, now I understand why you had to get moderator approval. I'd probably would have considered that bundle as I'm getting Killzone and an extra DS4 anyway. Camera…meh. But if the bundle saved $20-$30, I might have considered it. But alas, bundle was never made available/offered in Canada.

Not at all… I have no intention in buying a PS4 for a long time yet. I think the earliest I could buy it is if there is a special edition of Metal Gear Solid V that combines Ground Zeroes & The Phantom Pain. If that doesn't happen… at Final Fantasy XV's release in 2017?… XD

I am not a midnight line up type but a couple of people at work are going to so we were going to make a night out of it. I have a Pre-Order at Best Buy in Midtown Manhattan and they do not. I went in to ask about the specifics and found out that they will be doing the midnight event at the Best Buy Theater a few blocks away and that is only for non pre-orders. WTF! They said that I must wait till the next morning for my system. How about that? I would think that those who pre-order would be given priority. I took that Friday off and now I must go into Manhattan just to pick up my system. I'm going to try to find a way to obtain it the night of somehow. Any suggestions?

Simcoe

I'd try and talk to the manager ahead of time and ask why you cannot pick-up your pre-order at the midnight launch. If you rationally tell him that you live out of town and would prefer to stay in Manhattan that night rather than have to commute back the next morning for the sole purpose of picking up your order. I'd like to think a decent person would allow you to do this.

I go to midnight launches of games that I know will interest me. But for consoles I pass. I know a friend who got his PS3 snatched after walking out of best buy. If you want the PS4 that bad then people should've pre-ordered it and pick it up later that day unless you buy online. If you didn't and don't stand in line, you basically risk not getting a console as I'm sure they'll be sold out

The PS2 was the first console I tried to get day one. I picked rocks all summer and did whatever work there was to save up the 250$ for that PS2. I was young and you can make a few dollars doing that sort of thing where I live. The point is, the mother went to walmart in the afternoon and the clerk said that the PS2s were gone before daylight! This was the first time I realized the culture of the die hard day one purchases. I might par take in the PS4 event next week!
I need revenge for that sad day back in… the year 2000.
