Headsets can be complicated. Things get even more complicated during a console transition, so get ready.

According to a Game Informer report , any Bluetooth headset you're currently using for your PlayStation 3 will not work on the PlayStation 4 when the new system launches.

The bottom line is that eventually, some headsets will work while others won't. If you have a Sony-branded headset or a PULSE gaming headset, a future system update will allow those to be compatible with the PS4. Headsets that rely on bluetooth for chat won't work at all, though, unless you've got ones that rely on USB. Those, you'll eventually be able to use. As for any headset that relies on digital optical for game audio, you're good to go; you just won't be able to chat right off the bat. If you're wondering, Microsoft fans will face similar issues with the Xbox 360-Xbox One transition.

See? Told you it was complicated.

I just don't understand. Don't all bluetooth work the same way?

I'm one of the few that's dissapointed that DS3s won't work on the PS4, but you can somehow play PS4 games with the DS3 through VitaTV.

You would think that they would have addressed this b4 manufacturing…..I have a Sony headset and would expect them to at least assure that Sony prospects are operational upon release. glad I waited before investing in a higher end headset….Will wait til I am certain which headsets will be supported.

The answer: isolationism.

Never heard of a bluetooth device not accepting bluetooth.

My headset is not a sony headset, but it was made for gaming and it's bluetooth, if it doesn't work it won't be a huge loss, but it will be weird.

I have a sony branded bluetooth headset as well as the pulse headset, so I guess I'm fine after the update. I wonder what's different with this bluetooth spec that makes it incompatible with other bluetooth devices (including the DualShock 3)?

That's what I'm most curious about.

Can we not just plug regular headphones into the new DS4 controller? Doesn't that have a mic in it? Or maybe I heard that wrong?

There was talk about all bluetooth headsets being fine months ago (including statements from Sony) so it's interesting and a little confusing to see this suddenly pop up. Expect we'll get clarification soon one way or another.

Confusing indeed.

It does suck but you can still chat using the packaged headset or any headset that plugs into the controller to chat

The bluetooth headset is ok but I like my wired logitech one better anyways, it's not as fancy but everyone can hear me clearly.

They need to allow them all to work period. Nothings more sucky than bursting through the lines and capturing a spawn point while the other team has your team pinned down at the base and NO ONE spawns on it while you hold it down and 4 guys from the other team jump you and take it back!

another reason i canceled my ps4 preorder, no headsets will be compatible at launch.
hell they havent even announced any headsets for it!
M$ has announced quite a few, hell they even have announced a few soundbars.
i just cant understand how you can be a month out from a new console launch, and still have not announced a single headset for the device!
WTF!?

wish $ony would put their home theater and MDR1 tech into a ps4 headset, it baffles me $ony still hasent given us a premium headset for the ps3.
yea they have the stereo and pulse headsets, but there hardly premium!
something like the MDR600s would be nice.
and please, true proper 7.1DTS support!
it amazes me how few headsets support these days, i couldent believe my 400 dollar TB XP sevens did not support it, i mean come on 400 bucks and you dont even get DTS support!?
thats like paying 5 grand for a f*cking black and white TV!

Any 3.5 mm stereo/mic (4-pole/TRRS connector) wired headset will work, just plug it into the DS4! So that means, if you wanted, your Turtle Beach XP Seven which would have also come with that type of connector, should also work too. Unfortunately, Turtle Beach has confirmed that your headset will not be compatible with the Xbox One, only their XO FOUR and XO SEVEN headsets will be compatible with Xbox one.

Oh also, because the Pulse Elite does include a 3.5 mm TRRS cable, that should work by simply plugging it into the DS4.

Hope all this helps!

for voice chat?
plus my systems are a good 6Ms away from the consoles, so good luck finding a cable or extension long enough

Yes, for voice chat. Sorry, with "DS4" I was referring to the "Dual Shock 4" controller itself, not somewhere on the console. I'd agree, connecting a wired headset directly to the console 6m away would not be practical.

What about iPhone style headphones with the line mic built in? If you plug them into the DS4 would that work?
