Well, you can't have everything.
Despite the added power of the next-gen consoles, Ubisoft says the anticipated Watch Dogs will still have to run at "a steady 30 frames per second." That may sound disappointing, but don't forget that the game is one of those open-world extravaganzas. Here's how creative director Jonathan Morin explained it to VideoGamer :
"Right now the frame-rate we're focusing on [is] a steady 30[FPS]. There's always a balance, especially for open-world, between the simulation and the rest. I think for where we are, the most important thing is the steadiness and [ensuring] that it's always capped the same so when you play it it feels right."
Morin couldn't say whether or not the game's native resolution was a full 1080p on the PS4 and Xbox One; it may only be 720p. Again, though, we're talking about a very large world to explore, so boosting the frames per second could compromise that stability and smoothness. And I'd rather have that than a jumpy game that keeps trying to run at an impossible FPS, wouldn't you? Same goes for the resolution issue.
Watch Dogs launches for the PS3, 360, Wii U and PC on November 19, and is a launch title for the PlayStation 4 (November 15) and Xbox One (November 22). Is it high on your priority list?

I get that every time I open the homepage or any link from this site at the moment…
As for Watch Dogs I got that preordered along with Killzone: Shadow Fall and Knack so its very high on my priority list 🙂

I keep getting that download link too. Is it a virus or what?
DO NOT CLICK ON ANY POP-UP LINKS!!!
Yes, it is a virus.
My Norton Internet Security occasionally blocks malware attacks that keep finding a way to sneak their way onto this site.
I wish Ben would get someone on that to keep it from happening, but I imagine he is a busy man.
As long as 30fps is steady I really don't see the issue. GTA5 was pretty damn consistent apart from when you're underwater. I've just never seen the frame rate as an issue if the console can handle it.
Garbage. I'd rather have an actual next gen experience, there's no reason to get the PS4 version if it's still 30FPS and 720p. What a bunch of hooee, this is why cross gen games suck the big one.

You need to make a rant article ASAP
I think BF4 is also confirmed for 720p for 'next-gen' platforms 😉
Scott Lowe from IGN made a video about BF4 on ps4 expressing his concerns. Apparently it's not as next gen as EA wants us to believe.
I do need to write a rant tonight but for a different site. I'm thinking of starting a Sunday article here though.
Outside of Nintendo's Wii, this is the first gen I can recall that didn't have a sweeping increase in resolution.
You name it, from Atari 2600 to NES, from NES to Genesis or SNES, from PSX to PS2 to current gen. There was ALWAYS a substantial increase (usually doubled) in res across the board.
PC says hi 🙂
lol lv, yah, but that Steam controller. Don't know how I feel about it. It's one of those things I'd have to test first. And somehow I don't think we'll see Steam Machines at Walmart, or nothing, anytime soon with playable KIOSKS.
PC waves from 1998 and says, "No, nothing has really changed, but aren't I somehow still attractive?"
😉
At least my pc can play games at 60+fps and all the Anti-aliasing I want, as well as 1080p. The customization options of the PC will always be superior to that of consoles, and that just sucks. I really want to sit down with my PS4 and know I'm getting the best of the best, but I can't knowing I could be 5 feet to the right on my PC playing the same game but at a higher performance and probably for less (cost of the game I mean.)
they must be attractive Ben, because consoles have all but become PC's now. PC's with $50 a year service fees.
too bad we can't still have consoles from 1998 =)
PCs with $50/year fees?
Find me a gaming PC that costs $399.

here's one I found in 30 seconds for less than $500. it comes with free online play as well =p

I don't trust anything that Scott Lowe says. Dice has sorted out the issues that they had with the PS4 version. 1080P and 60FPS is what i last heard it's running at.
Lowe was trying to say the PS4 was running off PC hardware awhile back ago, when it was actually running off PS4 Devkits.
Temjin: I see. And I of course won't have to do anything. I won't have to change any settings, I won't ever have to upgrade it, and all games will perform the same if I don't make any alterations. Not being a tech geek, I don't care about fiddling and customization, but none of that will be necessary, right? And this will hold true for 7 or 8 years, and no extras or hardware upgrades required, right?
…right?

I guess one could pull cash from their "i didn't pay for 7-8 years of PS+ cash" and buy themselves a new graphics card that spanks consoles real nice (with money to spare) =p
And getting upgrades down the road isn't such a terrible thing. It can be fun, like Christmas morning excitement fun where all games run even better and look better just like that. Without having to repurchase any HD re-releases of your classic favs. And it can be fun to change settings to. I know having options in gaming life is a difficult thing to adapt to in a console only vacuum but it really ain't so bad once you get used to it.
I'm having fun with this. I hope you are too 😉
To all the PC people – I've got a GTX 660 (half the price of the PS4) and it won't do 1080p 60fps on a number of current-gen titles. My previous machine with a GTX 550 Ti was barely better than the PS3, but cost four times as much. Talking up hardware that's multiple times the PS4 is just rich people willy-waving :P. Of course your GTX 680+ machines can do that. If they couldn't, you'd be flat-out stupid for paying through the nose for them ;). If you want BF4 looking like you've seen the trailers, you need a $1000 GPU. On the other hand, I'd bet good money my PC (which would cost twice or more a PS4) won't run BF4 as well as next gen. Compare like with like, no-one likes rich buggers talking up their $1000+ dollar machines ;).
As for Watch Dogs, I'm personally a big fan of them prioritising simulation over frames per second. The simulation aspects of the game are important, and I'd argue far more important than the relative increase in fluidity from bumping FPS from 30 to 60. It's all about deciding where you want to spend your horsepower, and getting the best game for your buck from it.
Thing is Axe, stuff like PC vs consoles can be argued a 1000 different ways. It's all for fun when I do it. But it really comes down to the sort of genres, features, and content a person values most. To many gamers, a console is worth $600 or more dollars, given the value it offers them is great enough to make it feel worthwhile. Which leads me to this, debating over matters of money is actually pretty pointless to the core gamer, as the value of the dollar fluctuates based on one's income and other obligations and their desire to game. If PS4 was launching at $800 it would still sell through millions of units within the first few months. There's that many out there willing to exchange much of their time, working time or play time, to obtain the newest and best hardware. It's the culture they've absorbed themselves to. And not just consoles, but games themselves. Pretty sure GTAV wouldn't have made 800 million in a day without having a midnight launch to do it. To me, it seems insane people have positioned their life so heavily in favor of expending great portions of their time to get a title the second it's available. Yet to other gamers it's all part of the entertainment the culture brings them.
And lastly, video gaming as a hobby can and is far cheaper than many hobbies out there, no matter what platform(s) one decides on.

Oh my look what I started! Honestly I suggest a person own both. I wouldn't be nearly as happy as a gamer if I was without a console or a PC. Both have their positives.
Lame. I'll probably just pick this up for Wii U then if its not going to be a true next gen experience.
Yeah, and I'm sure the WiiU will have the same stats too.
Apparently the Wii U version is supposed to be identical. The Wii U is capable of rendering at 1080p and 60fps so me thinks if the PS4 version is only 30fps and possibly rendered at 720p, there is probably truth to that claim. But I haven't seen any footage of the game running on the a Wii U so it remains to be seen.
The Wii U version will probably run better than PS4 lol.
though it is likely the PS4 version will have a lot higher detail and visual effects, for what that's worth to you.
You're right Temji. Just read some comments from Ubisoft that graphically this will only be slightly better than current gen consoles on Wii U but less pretty than the PS4 version. So that's to be expected I guess.
Wow, current generation stats on a next gen title. Are they actually serious?!

This is disappointing. This is what happens with cross gen games. There is money to be saved by making one version. AC4 looks to have some really nice differences though. Also, I bet this 30fps is due to the X180 being inferior. Here we go again, dumbing down a game to meet an inferior systems specs!

What's sad is the PS4 version could likely be 45~60 FPS if it were unlocked.
I wonder if MS had a hand in this one…
When you see the upgrade program cost $10, you can tell they didnt spend much effort to make next gen better
or any effort.
But the cost is the same for every game that can be upgraded to next gen?
30 fps on a NEXT GEN CONSOLE? REALLY? No thanks. Oh. why does something from analytics.js try to enter my computer from this site? I say NO!
30fps isn't necessarily unusual. 60FPS can always be achieved during any gen. The question is the trade off. Less graphics detail for more frames. As time goes on I suspect many devs will still favor 30fps for increased visual detail over smoothness of play.
But it would be unusual if it is in fact 720p at 30fps.

i want my PS4 games in 1080p @ 60fps hence i shall no be purchasing this on ps4.
Wonder if we can play this game in it's entirety on our iPhone or Android, like Beyond Two SOuls.

crazy
Not happy to hear this as I expected 60 FPS. As long as it's a steady 30 at all times regardless if there's a little or a lot going on, I guess I won't complain.
I would like to know what top-of-the-line PC owners will be getting.
like what version they'll be getting?
Dude. Don't think many 'top of the line' PC owners have even considered a PS4. New consoles for them come in seasonal graphics card flavors.
Pretty sure with my 3+ yr old pc I'll be playing this on max graphics…
graphics like these?

Be sure to click it for maximum 1080p goodness 😉
pretty much. Haha, I have 590. So it's a heater, but a beast.
I meant what frame rate will top-of-the-line PC owners get on their machines, not what console they will buy.
I could be way off but with PC's aren't frame rates for games always variable? Game makers never lock down frame rates due to the wide variability of GPU abilities. What is the point of console game makers locking down frame rate for games if looking down the frame rate means locking it to the lowest FPS number.
Simco PC games give you the setting for you to choose for yourself ( curse those scary settings =p ) it's the vsync setting found in settings. It's an easy on off toggle much like choosing subtitles to be on or off in a console game. With vsync engaged the frame rate will lock itself to the display hertz of your monitor or tv. With it off the frames get produced as fast as the gpu can raster them, hence why we see screen tearing in some console games because the frames get torn or spliced as the display and gpu are out of sync.
Thanks Temjin!
Rumors are going around that PS4 multiplats might be scaled down to match Xbox One games. If this is true, then this is disgusting.
I have a feeling this is the reason why Watch Dogs isn't running higher. Also cross-gen games could also be the reason.
