The PlayStation 4 is a slick machine, but do you see that slickness characterized in the user interface?

We've gotten a few glimpses at the PS4's UI at past trade shows but now, we get an even better look at it. PlayStation community manager Chris Owen posted up some images via his Twitter feed , and that includes the system's Home screen, along with the What's New, Video Edit, Messages and Profile pages. Ain't they pretty?

You also see the PlayStation App, the console's free companion app for iOS and Android devices, where users will be able to receive notifications, game alerts, invites and messages. What do you think of the user interface based on these images? There's certainly a lot of blue, which I kinda like, and we've seen that browsing through the pages is fast and smooth. Design-wise, I think it works, and it definitely seems more attractive and more efficient than the current PS3 UI.

Still, I really just want my PS4 to play video games. Silly me.

To be honest… it looks rather cluttered… I like the PS3's XMB As it has a section dedicated for each format of media (Video. Music, Games etc.). The 360's layout is unbearably clutter with advertising, I don't want the PS4 to just be covered in tabs.

But One benefit will be the PS Store. The PS3 version is still horrible since they revamped it. Okay the other one was less stylish but it was far more practical and accessible, now I have to go on the search function because I just struggle to navigate the current menus.

I really like the revamped PSN. I know it's not the best thing ever but it makes searching for things SO much easier. I like how when you find a game it shows you everything they have for it like dlc and themes and avatars. I know it's not the best but it is way better than before. Step in the right direction in my opinion.

In a way i do like the the new design of the Playstation Store, I just don't like how some times it's slow. Some times it loads quickly for me. But the main thing i don't like is the search function, i never liked how the new search function works. I just want to type in the actual name of what i am looking for, would make it a bit easier. lol

Will I be gutted if I mutter that these screenshots reminded me a bit of Steams "Big Picture Mode"?

… If so, pretend I didn't say it. 🙂

Totally agree, Clam. It works real good, it's sleek, elegant and intuitive.
So I don't mind any similarities at all.

It does look a little cluttered, but I'm hopeful. They say it's customizable so hopefully that means we can make it as clean or cluttered as we want. Sony did an amazing job with the Vita's UI, so that gives me reason to be optimistic.

Seems to be the PS Store 100% of the time, which scares me.

I'm going to echo the cluttered sentiment but also say that I believe if there is enough of a stink about it, that Sony will do their best to improve upon it. While I might not think the PSN Store or the XMB is perfect, they have made great strides from where they started due in large part to user feedback. They clearly can't please all the people, but they do seem to try to make compromises and give the best experience that they can.

I really look forward to an improved and less sluggish UI with PS4. The PS Store, while pretty to look at, is a clunky mess. I really wish Sony could figure out how to organize their crap better. THey need like Apple or even MS's Xbox team to show them how it's done haha.

Yay for back to school!

This might have been covered before but if you intend to keep your PS3 do you have to create a new user profile on the PS4 or can you have the same one active on both systems? I understand the PS4 isn't backwards compatible but will I be able to play my PSN games on it from my PS3?

i do not believe that it will transfer over for psn games. they would have to make a ported version. psn games are made to run on ps3 system hardware.
you would want to keep your same name if your have plus though as your psn name would be tied to plus.

If I had to play my PS3 stuff only on my PS3 it's cool but my user id hopefully can be on both but I guess if nothing transfers over it really doesn't matter if I have to start anew. 🙁

I do like the UI for the PS4, I just hope you can customize it like some are saying. Hopefully you can hide certain things or disable things so it's not cluttered with info you're not interested in.

But i do like what i am seeing though, maybe a few tweaks here and there and it will be gold.

it looks ok, not terrible but not the best out there.
i just hope they afford us allot more customization with the UI than they did the ps3.
customizable boot screens and sound effects would be cool, have some theme tunes from famous franchises everytime you boot up your console.

About the cluttered appearance, agreed Ultimadesires.
