Sony Expects To Recoup PS4 Hardware Losses “Immediately”

Sony lost money on every PlayStation 3 it sold at launch, even with that exorbitant $600 price tag.

But that won't be happening again this generation. Sony will produce a cheaper, more developer-accessible model with off-the-shelf PC components, which should result in actual profit very soon.

At the very least, they expect to recoup their losses quickly. Sony told Eurogamer that they expect to recoup their losses "immediately" when the PS4 launches in the US and Europe this November. Sony Japan executive Masayasu Ito said the system will be sold at a slight loss, but that will be recovered when typical gamers pick up a subscription to PlayStation Plus "and at least one launch title."

The anticipated loss per console is about $60, so his statement makes sense. Obviously, any losses Sony does incur should be far less than the losses suffered during the PS3 launch. And of course, anyone who buys the system is coming away with at least one game, right? And as the Plus subscription is required for online play, it seems Sony is well positioned.

Yes, Sony is very well prepared this time around. I'm just waiting for better games to be announced. Don't get me wrong it'll satisfied many gamers this year, but I'm waiting for something like MGS5 or an JRPG with lots of replay value.

I love Sony, honestly.

Matter of fact, I'm planning on buying a Sony HDTV this weekend, to further support this wonderful company.

Yeah, Sony has been doing a lot of things right. And not just with the Playstation brand, but with their whole range of products.

I highly suggest you go with a Samsung HDTV instead.

my Sony TV rocks. It has for 4 years or so. The Sony blu-ray player I have is cheaply made. The eject button broke within a few months. It was made of the flimsiest piece of thin plastic.

Nothing wrong with the Bravia line.

The Samsung HDTVs are really good, but they can't compare to Sony's Bravia line. Also, many of the Samsung TVs have higher display lag than Sony's.

The Samsung screens are great.

There is a reason why most of the unpopular brands use Samsung panels in their screens. Also, most technology companies are using Samsung in their offices now days. My media company is filled with about 100 Samsung tvs and more than that in PC screens.

Bravia's are fantastic. Not sure about the other Sony brands.

Another reason making these little PCs was probably wise, Sony generally aims to make money after a very long period of strife and the reduction of manufacturing technology costs. This way the game division is going to look a lot better, more like something you want to keep investing in.

With the price in Latin American they will have enough profit to forget about the losses in US and EU.

hows that make sense?
the expected losses are 60 bucks per unit, but for them to make up their losses they need to sell 1 launch title, ie 60 bucks, and a + sub which is again what, 40 bucks?
60 plus 40 is 60 is it?

one thing i really wish $ony would bring to the ps4 is a all new ps4 headset.
the original ps3 one was ok, but i really want to see a really high end ps4 headset to compete with the more expensive astro a50s and turtle beach sevens.
one thing $ony has always done really well, im stumped as to why they refuse to give us a specialized high end headset.
yea alot of people wont want to spend 300+ bucks on a headset, but, well, TB and astro are not exactly struggling on the market now are they?

and then continue the high support and custom profiles through the pulse app.
its really cool how big name games have their own custom profile for the headset.

With initial first run defective system returns (they DO happen) they'd better.
