Reports: Sony To Reveal PS4 VR Headset

Hey, who remembers the Virtual Boy? Reading this news, that immediately popped into my head…sorry.

Anyway, various reports are indicating that Sony will introduce a Virtual Reality headset specifically designed for the PlayStation 4. According to Eurogamer , the hardware will be similar to the Oculus Rift headset (currently, there is no consumer version of the latter).

It's rumored that a VR version of the PS4 launch title DriveClub is in the "internal prototype stage," which means we might be able to race our friends in a truly virtual world. A report from CVG tells us that the PS4 VR headset will be announced at the Tokyo Game Show later this month. Eurogamer seems to believe it won't happen until next year; both sources say Sony had planned to unveil it at Gamescom, but that didn't happen for some reason. Maybe they just weren't ready.

Sony already has a VR headset, if you're wondering. It's not for the PS4, but it's the HMZ-T2 and it's available in Europe and Canada for £999; it can be used with 3D games and movies and features a pair of 720p OLED screens and a 5.1 surround sound system. I have a feeling something like this would give me a raging headache, but it could be a very cool option for new PS4 owners. I mean, provided they were willing to pony up the required dough. It'll probably be very, very expensive.

While I like what the Oculus headset is doing for the VR of games I don't really want something strapped around my head, as Ben said a raging headache.

Have you used a VR headset to know how you'll react to one?

Everybody reacts differently to new tech, and where one person might get a bad headache, another might not, and might end up potentially loving the experience.

I hope I fall into the latter category, because this sounds cool! 🙂

Not interested. From a technology stand point though, very cool.

Lets hope its not the Virtua boy all over again 😛

VR is a really cool idea though, that is how you make a game immersive.

There's a good chance that the PS4 VR headset will do much better than the Virtual Boy did.

The tech that went into the Virtual Boy is over 20 years old now, and A LOT has changed in the world of VR technology since then.

A night and day difference, in fact. 🙂

Those red LEDs in the Virtual Boy were terrible to stare at for long periods of time. 🙁

I'm admittedly fascinated by the technology, but I have absolutely no interest in ever owning one of these things. It would almost certainly induce headaches, and fatigue over extended periods of time. But more importantly, I don't like the thought of being unable to see what's going on around me in the real world. What if there's an emergency with my wife or kids and I'm totally oblivious to it because I can't see what's happening right in front of my face?… No thanks.

Besides; I have an HD projector, a 110" screen, and a decent home theater system. I'm plenty happy with that 🙂

ooOOooOoOOoooOH YESS! Man this is just unbelievable!
Not sure if anyone here will remember but I've on several occasions in the past said that *all* that is missing for everything to be perfect is that Sony unveils their equivalent of Oculus Rift.

And wouldn't you know… Now it turns out they will. OMG this is too great for words. I really can not wait!

Btw: HMZ-T2 is just a static 3D vision headset, a "private TV screen" sort of – it's not motion sensible and can not be used like Oculus Rift. Now we talk about entering the game world in 3D, you turn your head around and look around you like you have entered the game world, with the world covering your field of view.

In essence we can say that your head motion takes over from the left analogue stick, the game world is all around you wherever you look.
Sit in a car on a race track, turn your head to the left and take a look in the side mirror. Or tilt your head to look around a corner in a FPS. If you play Portal you are *in* the rooms, looking around you to solve the puzzles (reportedly Portal works fantastic in Oculus Rift).

I mean… How can one NOT dig this!

You don't need to spin around, remember you still move your body with right stick. So you'll move your head essentially like how you move it in real life. You don't twist your head 180 degrees backwards here either. It's basically just 90 degrees to each side.

I'm tellin' ya man, this is the first real step towards the holodeck! 🙂

I think there's big untapped potential with this tech. And really, the Virtual Boy has a lot more in common with something like the 3Ds than this. That is the virtual boy was virtual only in that it was 3D…. monochromatic 3D for worse. I suppose also the VB constrained your vision within a tunnel.

But there is some real excitement behind the Oculus technology. The combination of an Elder Scrolls style game and virtual reality headsets could be huge, like massively insane. I think John Carmack and co has abandoned their other projects to give Oculus games their full attention. He sees the potential obviously.

(out for delivery WOOHOO!)

I should also note, Cage's work would probably be very incredible with this sort of tech as well.

I'm sad….I think this technology is great, but I'm so susceptible to headaches (I can't even do 3d) that I will have to live vicariously through reviews. 🙁

: I thought the virtual boy was awesome fun. I wanted a Jaguar VR but I think it only worked with Missile Command 3D.

Not sure what to think of this peripheral.

I just want to try it. I could see it being novel for a while and then being just another fancy toy. I do like games on my 3D TV but i've only had 3 games that had a 3D option (KZ3, AC3, and BLOPSII). I enjoyed in 3D, but only AC3 had parts that were actually much cooler in 3D.

I think they'd have to make a very immersive game that is just not as good without a VR set for people to really jump on board. Trouble is, most studios would never do that, at least not for any game with a halfway decent budget.

One can only wonder what the man in that picture is thinking of while wearing the headset.

Virtual Reality headsets and glasses are for people who have everything. Wouldn't mind trying one but its use is a bit limited for the buying price. I'm sure they would be a big hit at parties, though.

dont $ony already have this?
they announced a VR device at TGS LAST year!
huh, coincidence they announce it at TGS, and stay silent till, well, TGS?
hmmmmmmmm……….

correction, the T2 is NOT a VR device its a HMD.
it gives you the sense that your at the cinemas watching a movie with the screen a good 30M away.
i actually bought the T2 earlier this year to mass disappointment!
1000 bucks is just a ridiculous price to pay for something like this!
especially when its so uncomfortable, i mean its pretty pathetic how oculus, a bunch of virgin inexperienced engineers, not exactly the worlds biggest technology company, have created something better and more comfortable!
$ony charges 1000 for the T2 and i could wear it for a hour before the pain becomes unbearable!
the rift, well, put it this way i spent 3 hours last night playing mirrors edge with no comfort problems whatsoever!
350 device made by noobs, is more comfortable and better than a 1000 device which is made by one of the industries largest electronic companies!
go figure…….

T2 is not VR, VR is your actually in the world, there is no screen, and the panels are right in front of your eyes almost touching giving you the immersive experience.
and thats the biggest problem with VR at the moment, you just cant get screens small enough in a high enough resolution at a reasonable cost.
the oculus uses a single 720P display, so thats cut in half for each eye.
go up to your 1080P full HD TV and rest your head against the display, you can see every single individual pixel.
that gives you eye strain and headaches VERY quickly!
now imagine that 100 times worse, because VR displays are not 1080P, there not even 720P per eye.
theres hope to see ultra HD, ie 2560×1440, displays into VR devices soon, especially since samsung & LG have prototyped them and LG also says they will be ready by chrissy this year.
maybe they will, but at what cost?
thats the biggest problem and disappointment with the oculus rift, there trying to deliver a consumer basic product.
they want something everyone can experience.
that limits them to what they can put into it because of manufacturing costs, but also they want a device everyones PC can run.
exactly why i cant see them using a UHD display.
1080P prototype is allot better, but the screen door effect is still quite apparent.

so my hope and advice is dont pussyfoot around with making a budget device.
VR IS cutting edge technology!
it has MANY, MANY, MANY problems still yet to be solved, and they aint gonna be solved by a 300 dollar device!
they require big budgets!
$ony has been obsessed with OLED tech as of late and they will be equally enthused to use it for a VR device because of its flexibility and a natural light source so displays can be MUCH thinner.
but that all adds cost, and there is no ultra HD OLED display released for the market yet there all prototypes and there 50"+ prototypes, were a long way away from seeing a UHD OLED VR display.
so keep it f*cking simple, just your standard LED 2560×1440 display, with preferably 120Hz refresh rate.
thats another big problem with VR, allot of people have come accustomed to playing with high refreshing screens.
hell my XBR is a 240Hz refresh rate, so going from 240 to a 60 refresh rate of the oculus rift is quite jarring indeed!
and that is exactly why you cannot cheap out on a VR device, the technology already implies enough problems itself, it does not need you creating more because your imposing a low budget restriction.
eye strain, latency, refresh rates, all problems that will be eliminated with a high quality UHD 120Hz display.
VR has enough problems as it is, dont add to those by cheaping out!

this IS this generations step forward!
first we had 3D.
then we had HD.
now will have final true to form VR!
and that sh*ts expensive, thats just how it is.
you dident see manufactures bringing out your budget el chepo full HD TV 6 years ago, so please dont put VR technology down, and ruin its excitement and potential, by cheapening it by going mass market.
its new tech of course its going to be expensive!
work with its strengths, not its weaknesses!

and you know what?
its sad, VR has me 100000000000 times more excited for it than i am next gen consoles!
hell give me a perfected VR device, and ill happily never ever buy another game, or game system, EVER again!
thats how much of a game changer VR truly is!

In my opinion VR is something that is fascinating on paper but hasn't really reached a point where it is relevant/worth the cost. Maybe we'll start to see it take off though, look how far TVs have come recently.

My other problem is that I play primarily play games with my wife, even if it isn't coop she normally likes to at least follow the story, so it doesn't make much sense to spend a ton a money on something that would shut her out.

Also, Driveclub is neat and all but I would be more interested in VR Killzone Shadow Fall.

I'd like to give it a try as I use the Fat Shark video goggles for FPV (first person view)with my remote controlled quad copters and planes, but they are not virtual of course but they just show you the real world,i use them with Go-Pro Hero3 HD black addition camera,if you don't know what i'm talking about try YouTubing it and you will see what I do lol, thats my other hobby as well as gaming,so I would definitely give this ago but I do think with them being virtual would also give me a raging head ache too.
