We've grown tired of the PS3's Cross Media Bar, haven't we?
The new UI (User Interface) for Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4 is sleeker and much more advanced overall, and SCE UK boss Fergal Gara says in fact, it's a "quantum leap" forward.
During a recent Digital Spy interview , Gara said the XMB has outlived its purpose and it just doesn't look "fresh or contemporary anymore." The bottom line is that it didn't fit the new ambitious vision of the PS4:
"It's not really up to the demands of, particularly, the vision of the PS4, and therefore showing we have absolutely made a quantum leap in terms of our user interface and those design principles of PS4, and demonstrating them live on stage last night, for me, that was a really, really exciting way to start the show."
Gara is referring to the introduction of Sony's press conference at Gamescom this week, when Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida sat down in a comfy chair and explored the PS4's UI capabilities. That UI definitely looks streamlined and functional and really, that's precisely what you want from such a system. If you missed the media briefing, here's the intro segment; we'll be doing that in a matter of months!
Shuhei Yoshida… What a legend, didn't even have to say a word.
Indeed. I like how Sony does events like this, it's not a traditional way of doing it but it just looks a lot cooler imo.
I know that whole netflix thing is the way of the future but it just looks like a Rube Goldberg version of the store. It'd be cool if there was a simple text-based version for us old guys. Must we be assaulted with visuals all the time?
To this day I refuse to watch online video news and reviews.
They have a closer version of the UI online but I don't remember the link for it though. I'm sure you don't really need the one i'm talking about though if you have a good eye you can basically catch what's posted in the video Ben has up.
Umm, I think the video is out of sync? O.o
yea it seems the video is ahead by about 10 seconds
Ok, I'm glad it's not just me. haha.
Check out this topic in the PlayStation 4 forum http://www.psxextremeforums.com/playstation-4/13597-ps4-interface.html
there's an embed for the better close-up video and a link to a great UI "walkthrough" from IGN.
Thank you sir. 😀
Looks sharp but I didn't like the circle loading icon. It was fast nonetheless. I also hope I will be able to hide certain aspects of the UI and just let my background show.
Shuhei >>>>>>>>Major Nelson > Reggie
As people like to say.

I hope there is an option to turn off the sound of changing through icons or selecting your own.
Those ones just annoyed me for some reason.
Just looks like it's going the route of the app craze like everything else, which as long as it works really well, then I don't care, but if it's as "streamlined" as the new ps store, they can keep it.
I hate the PSstore right now. Its irritatingly slow and as opposed to what it was is hard to navigate.
I was thinking the same thing. I hope the UI is better than the PS Store. Not an improvement in my book.
I don't know if I would go as far as World and say I want text based UI but I do like the XMB.
yeah the xmb is fast and easy, the new store is so bad. Just trying to get to the new demo's is like watching grass grow.
The camera Operators on that event were awful… They spent more time using a jib around the audience than a close up shot of the content we wanted to see.
But as for the new layout, I'm not found of it, I'm just tired of everything these days conforming to the 'app' layout. I hope my laptop never dies as I never want to experience that Windows 8 Metro screen on my computer.
I hope they let us customize our own themes like we can on the PS3, I made a cracking Final Fantasy IX theme which I adore. I don't want to have to put up with that Blue background for 5-10 years.
I also hope we can customize our own backgrounds as well.
You're not fond of much lately… so I get it.
Concerning Windows 8. Yeah its a mess so you not beibg fond of it, if its at all siniliar is justified.
And hopefully, the PlayStation Store isn't a ridiculously jerky/laggy experience as it has become on the PS3 since it became its own app.
Yea its ridiculous.
I still really like PS3's Cross Media Bar.
I do as well, but i also don't mind this version of it. 😀
But from what I watched of the conference, the XMB still lives on in a portion of the new UI, so we're not totally rid of it yet.
THE XMB LIVES ON!!!
I think the new UI looks like crap, you have some boxes of different sizes that change with each page, not displaying the same information, making it very chaotic.
The XMB was very simple to use, with things well sorted, and allowing some customization (for music : alphabetic, track name, genre – allowing you to choose how you want to name it).
Anyone else think this video sucks!? The sound is way off for me at least (like 30 seconds off), and the idiots in the control room keep zooming out so we can't see a damn thing! Someone fire these morons and just keep the camera zoomed in so we can see the stage and the screen, I could not care less about seeing random reporters in the audience with their laptops and tablets and phones on!
Play it safe & wait & see & reserve judgement until release (then see it demo'ed in a store).
The XMB has become very slow in recent years, and in terms of user experience, it isn't that good by today's standards.
The new UI isn't what I expected after the first trailer for it. It seems like the Store is integrated into the UI, and the XMB is still there in all it's glory.
I was looking for a new evolution of the PS UI. Bit dissapointed.
Haha a quantum leap is a tiny leap in the nanometer length-scale. I don't see how that's amazing
