Bungie: Destiny Takes The Open-World FPS To Another Level

Borderlands is an elite franchise. The sequel especially is a great achievement in the realm of open-world shooters.

But Bungie intends to go above and beyond with Destiny . In speaking to Edge , design director Joe Staten said that while gamers will certainly be familiar with the game's style and structure, the developer intends to push the envelope.

He says they'd be "idiots" not to look at great games like Borderlands and Far Cry but at the same time, Destiny 's social features will set it apart. Said Staten:

"When we look at a game like that, we look at the things they're doing well and also at opportunities they might have missed that we can capitalize on. You can party up with a group of people and then go around with that group, but never in Borderlands are you going to collide with a group of other people doing it too. We don’t do that just once or twice in the game, we do that all the time, everywhere."

He added that the hallmark of any co-op shooter is "walk into that space and clear out the enemies." But Destiny is designed to be more dynamic, more unpredictable; it should give us a constant sense of a changing world. In other words, we should expect a super high immersion level, and that gameplay they showed off at E3 was very encouraging, to say the least.

Destiny is set to launch some time next year for the PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Caring about social features: Something I cannot do.

We should team up sometime. Group gaming can be radically fun if done with the right company.

… And I somehow imagine you would be a really fun team member. I expect loads of great one-liners along the way. 😉

It's only 6 time zones (7 for MN). I would rock it, or at least try to. None of my other friends own a PS3 or even play games for that matter. This would be nice change.

WorldEndsWithMe, PSX's very own resident socialite. hahaha.

EDIT: I'm in AUS. When I am going to bed, you guys are getting up, so if you dont mind playing Destiny first thing in the morning, I dont mind staying up late 😀 hahaha

I've played with several american friends in weekends – especially during my mmorpg years.
A weekend we're both off all it takes is for you to start gaming a bit early in the evening and me to keep playing a bit late in the night and we're there. Seven hours difference is not more than that. 🙂

It would be fun to meet some of the PSXE friends here. But I guess it will not happen until a *good* mmorpg hits the console world.

I'd love to play this with some PSX folks! We'll see how it goes. I'm on American East Coast time, so hopefully that would help with planning a bit. Something to look forward to next year.

This is one of the few games I'm looking forward to. My only gripe, is that my best friend is getting an XB1 and destiny.. and I'm getting a PS4 and destiny. I wish we could play together. but.. oh well.. his lose 🙂

Guess I'll need to find some PSX players to play with.

Make sure when you talk about it to keep mentioning all PS4 exclusive content and stuff like touchpad usefulness. You know, make him feel bad n stuff 🙂

I'll be on destiny like every second for the first week and then as much as possible after that.

I'm in AUS though, so it would be hard 🙁

I'll stay up late to play, I have nothing better to do at the moment, still looking for a job though with no luck.

Add me to the list, too, of PS4 players on Destiny. I think it's going to a hoot to play!

Game looks real good. Cant wait to play co-op. The immersiveness sounds very appealing and I wonder if the different geoups of players and PvP with eachother?

That seemed to be the implication in this article. When saying "Groups collide"

Considering some of the best fun I have had this year involved Borderlands 2 and Defiance, this game has me chomping at the bit.

I just wonder how much different this is going to be from games like Planetside 2 and other MMOfps games we have seen before.

If they can make the story work and put in some really fun boss fights that will be cool. Still going to keep my eye on this one.
