Square Enix's idea for Final Fantasy XV ? They want it to be "more dynamic."

Series director Tetsuya Nomura told Final Fantasy News (via ShackNews ) that FFXV will offer a focus on "quick action" and will attempt to keep the player in control at all times.

"We wanted to create like an action-based FF this time because we wanted to create a dynamic feeling between the story and the game itself. Of course, we are going to put many FF elements into it, because otherwise there is no point calling Final Fantasy XV. Naturally, we still think we should have some old school FF feeling to the game."

Forgive me if I think there's a huge contradiction in those statements. If the game is about action, how on earth can it retain the old-school feel of the franchise? It's impossible. Basically, he's going to let us control our characters at least a little during cut-scenes, and I've got only one thing to say to that: We don't need to! We're not all twitch gamers with attention deficit issues in this country, Nomura. I swear we're not.

But it doesn't really matter now, I guess.

well, they better do something about those graphics. That screenshot screams current-gen. Isn't this a PS4 game?

Technically yes, but Square Enix games have their own generation. They are announced , 10 years go by, they release on whatever system pops up in a random number generator lottery.

Its about as next gen as AC4,watchdogs and mgs5,meaning not next gen at all.
Sorta like the difference between god of war 2(PS2) & god of war 2 HD(PS3)
Sure take away the fancy reflections and the insane draw distance from KZ:Shadowfall and tone down the graphics a bit and POOF! PS3 game or there abouts.

So none of those games except KZ:shadow fall has next gen graphics? MGS5 is a step up from the current gen with out question. I fail to see only subtle differences.

I believe the ground zeros trailer was ps3 footage but i could be wrong,if all the ps4/xbone versions of these crossgen games have is a tad nicer graphics & a bit better collision detection then its not worth 400+ bucks to me when i can just spend 50bucks!!
The games released towards the end of 2014 & 2015 will be through next gen imho.

You can say that about ANY game. If you take away the next-gen graphics of games, then you only have the gameplay.

And Watch Dogs is one game that is definitely next-gen in it's gameplay.

They really have no idea what is going on in gaming right now. So it looks like we can expect another slapdash attempt to jam old school things into a format in which they don't fit, a la the "puzzles" in Resident Evil 6.

Lost interest as soon as it switched to being mutiplat and that i'd have to spend 450 bucks to play it!

(My first post, yay)
Square enix's self inflicted wounds are painful to witness, there was nothing broken with the FF 1-9 formula and the Square Soft of old would innovate in other titles and take the best of what they learned and apply it to the Final Fantasy series.

As far as the current gen look of FFVX, I don't overly care unless this is a game that will be out in late 2015.

I'm trying to ignore all the negativity for this game…
I was excited when it was announced as Versus, and I'm still excited for it now.

I hope it turns out well (yes, in spite of it being an action-rpg).
While turn-based is more reminiscent of "old-school" FF, turn-based does not automatically mean a superior game.

Sorry I know Im a minority when it comes to FFXV here but as Ive watched the gameplay trailer a few times I wouldnt want it to be old school turn-based. I love how Noc,Prompto and Gladiolus worked together and defeated the Iron Giant with his own sword.

I've officially taken a "we'll see" stance on this title. SO much of me wants to be anxious and hopeful, but I also can't shake the feeling of impending failure and disappointment.

"Personally," I think there's more to it than just old school turn based gameplay to make a FF game have the feeling of old school element of its past iterations, so in a way I can see what Nomura means.

The biggest departure is the gameplay. It can still have a great story about "crystals," a party system, towns to explore, airship travels, many weapons, awesome character growth, and perhaps secret quests and summonings. I mean they also have people that have worked on VII to that may help get all of that incorporated into the game. Seriously, we had an idea from 2006 on how this game is to be played, so why are we now just continuously concerned about turn based gameplay and this game playing like a traditional FF game. We knew it was going to be more like a spin-off when it was announced alongside FFXIII.

As of now, I'd like to just leave this game alone and just let it be. If the next Final Fantasy (XVI?)promises to have more of a traditional gameplay, then pulls off a fully action-oriented gameplay instead, then we can be concern about that and talk about their lost ways. I mean this game was going to be action-oriented from the beginning, and its coming from the developers of Kingdom Hearts. I'm sure some of you know how that game played.

No he clearly was referring to the need to be constantly involved even through cutscenes.

First of all, I find it somewhat funny and annoying that people act like XV was never a side game and in development since 2006. The only thing that making it a mainline title does is gives them a chance to give it a lot more freedom in terms of FFXIII related plot connection. I agree that Final Fantasy has never been an action based game and I was aggravated at the fact that they changed it to the next main game. From what I can tell, it's the first FF to share the same mythos as a past FF titlec (in the mainline series without being a direct sequel, anyway). The only other game I can think of that shared a universe was FFXII and the Tactics games. In a way, it's a very cheap way for them to go ahead and make a new Final Fantasy without actually making a new Final Fantasy. I'm kind of glad now that they put it on the PS4 since the PS3 apparently was having problems with some aspects, like cars running at full speed crashing the game. If something like that was screwing up the whole game, then imagine the airships and the summons. They were probably much smaller on the PS3 but the PS4 hardware probably let them expand the size of things. As for the XBox One deal, that's pretty stupid of them and I feel a deep disappointment in them but think, the game had the Playstation in mind since the beginning, so which one do you think will be the better version? As long as they don't have to dumb down the game because of the XBone, then I'm fine. Also as for the seemingly this gen quality, I could care less, look at the game in general, but they aren't even NEAR finished with it being transferred to next gen, so keep your panties on.

I have a feeling that the Final Fantasy purists out there would likely opt to experience simultaneous projectile vomiting and diarrhea rather than play an action based FF title.

I however am not a FF purist, so maybe I will give FFXV a try one day when it hits the sale rack.

I don't think you need to be a purist to be left scratching your head a bit at their contradictory reasoning

I assume the old school feeling he is talking about would be the world? It can have a more action based approach but if it has a huge world, with interesting characters, side quests, ultimate weapon quests, mini games etc then that would perhaps give it that feel.

However its never going to feel turn based thats for sure.

So, what definied FF wasn't JUST the combat mechanics.

Just saiyan'.

When I think of FF, I think of a lot of things, the combat mechanics is only one of them though, and I still see a lot of FF in FFXV.

your correct FF wasnt defined just by the combat system

the open world is a start
the ability to backtrack
the story
the likable villans and interesting cast
the gameplay og being able to choose how you want to fight
multiple characters
the ability to customize your characters materia junction system ff5s class system
FF6 magicite sysytem FF9s ability system
FF10s spheree grid system and even ff12s licence board

chocobos and moogles
crystals no ill disagree with that because
2 6 7 8 and 10 have nothing to do with crystals

and the cool summons
