Sony Says PlayStation Neo WonÂ’t Shorten PS4 Life Cycle

This generation of consoles has gotten pretty interesting recently, with both Sony and Microsoft now planning to launch significantly more powerful mid-generation consoles that offer full backwards compatibility with what is currently out there. While having a more powerful PS4 on the market might be cause for concern for original PS4 owners, Sony’s WorldWide Studios head has said that the PS4 Neo won’t shorten the PS4’s life span.

"Well no, PS4 is PS4, you know the new high-end PS4 is still PS4, so you know the lifecycle is not going to be shorter," Yoshida said in an interview with Gameswelt.TV ( via NeoGAF ).

He was responding to a question about if console generations were getting shorter as companies like Sony, and Microsoft with Project Scorpio, release hardware upgrades before a console cycle has ended.

From the way Yoshida answered the question, it seems like he wants to stress that Neo and PS4 will complement each other. Neo will be the more high-end (and thus more expensive) model, while the standard version will be more affordable and still capable of hosting great-looking games such as Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.

Yoshida's comments match up with what PlayStation president Andrew House said this month when he announced Neo. "It is intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4," he said at the time. "We will be selling both [versions] through the life cycle."

As for why Sony is introducing new hardware in this way to begin with, House said it comes down to how the company is responding to consumer behavior.

"The consumer is attuned to a different cadence of innovation in technology thanks in great part for the upgrades cadence on mobile phones or PCs," House said of this new strategy to offer a more powerful version of the same system.

Sony confirmed that it was working on a new "high-end" PS4 , codenamed PlayStation 4 Neo, ahead of its E3 press conference earlier this month. The console was not shown at E3, however, despite rumours suggesting that it is due to launch relatively soon.

Microsoft, meanwhile, announced the first official details on its next Xbox console Project Scorpio, confirming that it will feature a 6 teraflop GPU and will launch in late 2017. The announcement took Yoshida by surprise, however.

"I was surprised [Microsoft announced Scorpio]," Yoshida said earlier in the interview. "I was not expecting them to talk about [it]. It's very very super interesting what they are doing."

Yoshida's comments echo those of Sony Interactive president Andrew House, who said last week that he was "surprised by the step of announcing something over a year ahead of time."

"The dynamics of the tech industry are such that there's a much heavier emphasis on immediate gratification than there was," he said. "A lot of that is to do with how Apple has very cleverly and elegantly managed the 'available now' approach. So yes, that was a slight surprise to me."

Well, it's good to hear from Yoshida that the PS4 Neo won't shorten the PS4's life cycle. I'm not planning to buy the PS4 Neo when it comes out, as I'm already ok with my current PS4. How about you guys?

Having not yet purchased a PS4, I am definitely gonna wait until Neo is out. Not necessarily for Neo, just more to see how it's pricing might affect the PS4's.

I'm wondering why you waited this long to buy one anyway?

At least you will get the WOW factor of a huge leap with some incredible graphics upturns.

Couldnt justify the price. My PS3 still works, so does my PSP, and I have a PC. Not to mention I dont have a ton of time to game. There hasnt really been any games that I look at and say "Thats why I need a PS4."

Same reason I never bought a Vita. My PSP works fine for what its used for, (mostly classics games) and the Vita would fill that same role. So no sense in buying one yet. Although I do want one, Im kinda a techie, I havent been able to justify it yet.

*Actually 2 PC's. One for web/itunes/word and light gaming (Civ, Sims, Cities, etc.) and one for major gaming (Witcher, Doom, Rainbow Six, etc.)

You will change your tune when you get that PS4. Now I feel gross when I go back to my PS3. I only do it for turn based JRPGs. All the great games are on PS4.

@wackazoa

Say the original PS4 model drops in price when the new PS4.5 comes out, which would you get?

When I do have the time, I game on the PC with the best settings for 3rd party games that are available for it. The consoles are worth getting for the exclusives though (c'mon how else are you gonna play Uncharted 4?).

I am interested to see exactly how much of a leap the new console will be in comparison to the old model. I most likely won't upgrade to the newer console (would rather would spend the cash on a better GPU for the PC tbh).

Hanz… If the PS4 drops to around $300, then I will get it. Dont need the Neo since I dont have a 4K TV, and all the upgrades will be somewhat wasted on me. I kind of like what the Xbox did lowering their Xbox One to $280. Almost tempted to buy one since I have never owned an Xbox.

But yeah PS4 original at $300 (or lower) is what Im sort of waiting for. Like you said I have a gaming PC for any major game that I want to play at the highest settings so the PS4 is really only for the exclusives.

*Only thing that would make me go Neo is if it comes with an already installed SSD.

I hope that from now there is no more of a 'generational cycle'. If they are going to do this, they might as well go all the way.

I want the PS5 (or whatever they call it) to also just be an upgraded 'PS4', where it would be possible to run PS5 games on the original PS4 but perhaps it would do so at very low settings (or could lag, thus the need to upgrade).

I want all my Playstation games to work on the newer consoles from now on, no more backwards compatibility issues please.

I dunno about that lag thing but maybe for lower juice-consuming games it's a good idea, especially downloads.

We really do need B/C to stay up now and for good.

No the lag would naturally occur due to the older hardware not being able to keep up with the newer games (like running new games on old PC's, still possible to run, but lags like hell).

Crap. We need some color option here in the US. I would like to see a stealth platinum with some blue (or something close to that) that would look killer.
