Some say this will be one of the last – if not the last – generation of home video games consoles.

And many argue that it would be better for the industry if we simply had one universal system that played everything, and that it's silly and ultimately counterproductive to have these competing consoles.

Well, I'm still not sure where I stand on the issue, but I do know I'm less likely to be a multi-console owner these days. Growing up, I always needed more than one; from the SNES and Genesis onward, I always played on more than one platform (even if the alternate platform was PC). Right up until the last generation, when I had PS3 and Xbox 360, this was the norm for me.

But this is the first generation in a very long time where I haven't felt compelled to own multiple consoles, and it's not because PlayStation 4 is head-and-shoulders above the competition. I don't even think it is at this point (though I believe it'll change in 2016, what with the exclusives on tap). I think the reason I'm a single console owner is just because PS4 and Xbox One seem so ridiculously similar. Yes, PS4 has the obvious technical edge, as most multiplatform titles tend to perform better on Sony's console, but we're talking about minor differences. And Nintendo lost me a while ago.

I might be intrigued by the NX but knowing the gimmick-happy company that Nintendo has become, I'm not really holding my breath. Then, combine this with the fact that more games are being produced than ever before and I have less time than ever before, and a second gaming platform just seems superfluous. I doubt I'd even have much chance to play the Vita if it had any games I wanted to play. I'm just wondering if others out there feel the same way. Or are you the opposite? Are you more interested in having multiple consoles in your entertainment center these days? And if so, why?

Less likely. I am always intrigued by mario, zelda, etc… but the last time I pulled the trigger (buying the wii) it rarely got used. I'm satisfied with the PS4. Add to that point by the lack of time I have and it's all I need.

i dont mind owning multiple consoles, and by that i mean nintendo and sony lol. if these companies end up combining their games into one super console then of course thats gonna be very attractive. this will eliminate the need to compete for hardware. but imagine the amount of games that will be pushed out, like you said zero time.

i havent owned multiple consoles since the cartridge age.

n64, snes, and sega were the ones i held on to until ps2 came out. my brother owned a psx so i didnt need one since we shared it. i sold the 64 and sega to get the ps2 and that ended up dominating until ps3 came out and i stayed loyal since. i played other peoples xboxes but never cared to jump on the wagon for obvious reasons.

i wanted the wii badly. once i saw the library i realized id only be getting it for the marios and zeldas, so i got over it due to space/money. this is pretty much the same reason as to why i didnt get the wii u either.

I would love to have one console to play all the games out there. Don't have enough room for all the consoles in the world. My hope is that PC will be the go to for the home and handheld market. Sony and nintendo would be better off trying to produce their own pc hardware parts, OS software, and digital store that would be compatible with the current PC market.

Another great thing about this is competition will still be there between the companies, if not more.

Sony already exited the PC hardware space which is dominated by absolutely razor thin margins. If you think either Sony or Nintendo would be foolish enough to try to compete in that space, you've got another thing coming.

I don't think either of them have a choice. PC and mobile market are both chipping away at them. With microsoft main plan of entering the gaming market partially working even though their abuse in the OS market might actually make this backfire.

More people are getting into pc gaming and digital platforms like steam and gog are rising. Even sony and nintendo have full fledged digital platforms.

Yes sony's laptops were a absolute failure, but you can do more than just produce laptops in the pc hardware business. For example controllers. If it wasn't for microsoft 360 controller, pc gaming would be a pain because good controllers (besides keyboard and mouse) was almost non existent. On top of that, everyone stepped up their game ever since it came out.

I think that the console gaming space is not going anywhere for at least another 10-20 years.

If the PC/Mobile space keeps on getting popular (which is inevitable), then I imagine Sony and others may try and make their stores accessible to those general platforms. (perhaps with fees and such)

If all games in the future are available digitally, that makes for a very easy transition in order to bring everything together in one general platform like the PC.

Everything is already in place.

Should it happen? Will it happen?

That's the real question. (of course, in the end, it will be the 'business decision' that determines the outcome).

I do have multiple consoles, PS4 and X1. The latter gets to little play time, until now that I'm playing Quantum Break.

And sadly the backlog is growing fast… Too fast

I expecting this to be my final multi console generation. Nintendo's losing me big time. The NX being in 2 parts it seems (console and hand held) is pushing it. XBOX started good, but being too PS4ish and less powerful, I'm not seeing a need for what comes next. Probably going to just have a PS5. Maybe the next Nintendo handheld.

Try raising kids, work for a living, keep a wife happy, and have a social life and come back to me and tell me how you play two consoles so i can figure that one out. No one with a life can play two consoles at a time. At least imo.

I won and owned an Xbox One Forza 6 Limited Edition up until last month because I sold it for easy money. I played Halo 5, Forza 6.

We got Halo for Christmas solely so my girl's father could continue his Halo tale with Halo 5. He's an OG Air New Zealand pilot captain. Strange cool world aye. He's read all the Halo.

I think Sony plans to release Horizon: Zero Dawn and Gran Turismo Sport in the fall, although there is no confirmation yet. And the NA version of Tales of Berseria is most likely to be released in the fall.

I've always had multiple consoles every generation until this one. Now I'd rather have one console with all the bells and whistles. If I got multiple consoles this gen I probably wouldn't be able to get VR. Especially because now I need a new wheel because my g27 doesn't work with ps4, and using VR with a wheel when playing GT Sport should hopefully be a dream.

PS4 will be the only console I own this generation. Moving forward, I doubt that will change.

I have multiple PSPs, PS2s, PS3s, and PS4s, if you count PS TV as a Vita I have multiple Vitas. YesI'm likely to own multiple consoles. As to whether I'll by an Xbox One or Nintendo NX, nah, not gonna happen. There are no game franchises on Xbox that interest me at all, and Nintendo has been stuck in the Metroid/Mario/Zelda loop for so long that the ceased to be relevant to my gaming what feels like a couple of decades ago.

I don't know if you remember, but Nintendo tried the same thing they are trying with NX when they brought the WiiU out. It was gonna be this console to beat the PS3 and Xbox 30 because it was newer, and take on PS4 and Xbox for Next Gen honors. Sadly the hardware wasn't even up to the task of outperforming the 360 or PS3.

So far we really don't know much about NX other than it's coming from a company who depend on selling and reselling a handheld console that's well over a decade old internally (but no one seems to care). Nintendo may have a storied past, but their modern history just doesn't say "cutting edge console".

So, there you go. No Xbox for me, no Nintendo for me. I have a smartphone (Sony Xperia Z1s), Tablet (Sony Xperia Tablet Z) a decent i7 laptop PC and multiple generations of Playsations. Xbox? We don't need no Xboxes. I don't have to show you no stinking Xboxes. Nintendo NX? We don't need no stinking NX….

A decade? If only that was the case.I got to play around with the 'new' 3ds recently and was blowing away how terrible the screen, the graphics and the everything looked.Only Nintendo has the balls to release 'that' thing when there's phones with 2560×1440 resolution and ps3 like graphics.

This generation, I picked up all 3: The Wii U, Xbox One and PS4 (of course). I've had the most enjoyment from the PS4 thanks to Resogun and Batman: Arkham Knight. The Xbox One mostly just sits there but I am enjoying Tomb Raider on it. The Wii U has a few gems on it I really love, like Bayonetta and the new Yoshi. Would I get all three again? I don't know… like many others here, I would probably jump on PS5 and a new Nintendo box, but I would leave Microsoft alone as I think they have lost the plot. I like the more exotic nature of the PS2 – PS3 and what their respective hardware nuances brought to the table. It made them different and I enjoyed seeing what developers were going to squeeze out of them next. This generation, what runs on PS4 is going to (more or less) also run on Xbox One but with a big hit in frame rate. So I kind of regret getting the Xbox One. I mean, if they are all going to be based off of a fundamental AMD APU design, what is the point, really? The exclusives will need to be damn well worth it.
