Outside of the Nintendo world, a true platformer is an increasingly tough sell.

We see plenty on the small-budget digital side of the industry but the days of the AAA pure platformer are in the past. However, things can be cyclical. There was a time when it looked like the entire fighting genre was on life support, but it enjoyed quite the rejuvenation, didn't it?

And now that the awesome Ratchet and Clank remake is just around the corner, one wonders if it could pave the way for something like a Jak and Daxter effort; either a remake or full-fledged sequel. Now, Naughty Dog has been asked many times if a new J&D adventure was a possibility and at first, there were glimmers of hope. But the team sort of broke our hearts last November when they said they just couldn't make it work . They obviously considered several possibilities but nothing was clicking.

Well, what if R&C is a big hit on PS4? What if it successfully appeals to the long-time fans and a new generation of gamers ? Might Naughty Dog see that success and reconsider tackling a Jak and Daxter idea? Sure, we know they'll give us another The Last Of Us but after Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is finally out the door in May, we know that's Drake's final adventure. Maybe now is the perfect time to test the waters. While it's true that neither franchise in question is a "true platformer," per se, that particular blend of action, adventure and platforming elements isn't commonly found nowadays.

Which could be the very reason why R&C does exceedingly well. That style of gameplay was never "old." It was never supplanted by something that was supposedly better. It was just sort of left behind and if done correctly, a modern version of that gameplay should be fantastic . Perhaps the only thing holding Naughty Dog back is the increase in average gamer age; we already know that a lot of adult gamers from today will call R&C "kiddie" and would probably say the same thing about J&D. But you never know; given the sheer amount of grit and ugliness in the industry today, I think developers would be surprised at what gamers might respond to…

Racing games and platformers are what I grew up playing so I'm all for this.

I think platformers sort of merged with RPGs though. An awful lot contain platform elements these days.
