February NPD: PS4 Wins Again, Far Cry Primal Tops Charts

PlayStation 4 continues its dominance of the market.

The February NPD sales results are in and once again, Sony's flagship console topped the hardware charts in the U.S. Sony offered the following statement on the victory:

"We would like to thank our fans and partners for making PlayStation 4 the top-selling hardware platform and the software sales leader in February, according to NPD. We continued to see strong year-over-year sales growth for PS4 hardware and software and are truly humbled by the support and enthusiasm from gamers. We will continue to deliver amazing gaming experiences with the upcoming launches of Ratchet & Clank, MLB The Show 16, and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End."

Overall, hardware sales fell 23 percent to $292.3 million but as NPD analyst Liam Callahan noted, this is mostly due to the launch of the Nintendo 3DS in February 2015. Furthermore, last-gen systems continue a sharp decline; combined PS3/Xbox 360 sales fell 77 percent, while PS4/Xbox One sales dropped only 6 percent.

As for the top games last month, the well-received Far Cry Primal topped the software charts. It managed to beat out the ongoing blockbuster that is Call of Duty: Black Ops III , which is no small accomplishment, as this is the first time BOIII wasn't #1 since it launched in November. Rounding out the top 5 were Grand Theft Auto V , Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 and NBA 2K16 .

Overall software sales declined 11 percent to $309.5 million, again due in large part to a steep drop in PS3/Xbox 360 software. Here's the top 10 titles for February 2016:

Glad to see FC: Primal torched all comers, as "King of the hill"

Capcom made a big mistake locking SF down to one console while marketing it only to the core online community… a community that had a preference for the Xbox 360 last gen.

They'll need to recover the franchise by prepping up SFVI for a full scale re-launch in the years to come.

Maybe the smaller, friendlier Gears of War 4 will help Xbox One.
