Two new dates to toss around for PlayStation 4 discussion:

One is the freshly announced launch date for the highly anticipated No Man's Sky (June 21 in North America) and the other is for the PS4 exclusive Uncharted 4: A Thief's End ; it's now coming on May 10 after a brief two-week delay.

The big question is, which of these games is more likely to disappoint the community? One might assume it's No Man's Sky for a number of reasons; i.e., it's a brand new IP, there is some question as to whether or not it will feel like a full $60 production, and there's still a bit of mystery surrounding the actual goal of playing. Then again, it's a hugely ambitious project and it could end up being downright revolutionary. The amount of promise that game has is absolutely mind-boggling…there are just a few pitfalls to negotiate.

On the flip side, while Uncharted is a beloved and acclaimed series, this latest – and last, for Drake – entry has been rousing suspicions. There have been several delays, for example, and the story really needed to be completely rewritten after Amy Hennig and Justin Richmond left. On top of which, let's not forget that developer Naughty Dog has opened things up a bit with this new installment, so the gameplay and scope might be a little different. Besides, the expectations are so crazy high for this game, it almost has to be the best thing since sliced bread not to disappoint.

We could just be optimistic and say that both titles will be Game of the Year contenders in 2016 but optimism doesn't always fly on the Internet. 😉

I've kind of wondered about No Man's Sky. I mean don't get me wrong, I'm crazy excited for it. It's a bit of a technical marvel from a game design standpoint. I mean, an in game universe that you will never see everything on? Ever? That's amazing. The hype for it is unreal and I'm super excited for it. But on the flip side I'm also worried that it may not really matter if the game isn't any fun to play. I'm hoping it won't be a letdown but if it is, I'll be pretty disappointed.

i think its more like a game to try rather than a game to sit for hours to play. My sense of patience is lower i guess. I foresee myself getting sucked in by the technicality of the game then just never play it again after an hour, like Wii Sports when it first came out.

I don't think No Man's Sky will be as ambitious as everyone thinks. From what I seen the many planets looked void and uninspired. You could throw all those planets at consumers to impress but if there is a lack of content, what's the point? Cut those numbers down and use your resources to fill those planets. But this is still to be foreseen for the most part I suppose.

If I'm making a bet No Man's Sky will dissapoint.

Agreed. Unlimited combinations of many colors of the same things recombobulated over and over might not be what people are thinking it will be.

In case anyone was wondering…

"Procedurally Generated" is PR speak for RANDOM.

It's not hard to randomize a dungeon (Diablo), or a 3D environment, given certain parameters.
That doesn't make a game good. If anything, it's a lazy approach. Whenever I see that term, I'm almost instantly turned off.

Me too Big6, however the hope seems to be that a randomly generated world in the hands of the right technology could be very good as opposed to say, the dungeons of Persona 3: Corner, corner, corner, stairs…

The variety I have seen and heard of is pretty impressive.

The planets have aliens with languages, and you can impress or offend different races.

I think its going to be a good game but I do agree procedural is nice to an extent but I will take a hand crafted map any day of the week over a game with "infinite" replay ability due to procedural generation.

There is nothing lazy about procedurally generated maps. Good procedural generation means more variety, more replay, than manually generated maps. It's also much more difficult to do right, because you have to create algorithms that genuinely randomize level geometry while still providing clear paths to quest completion while retaining an identical level of gameplay difficulty.

But sure, it's "lazy" lol.

I havnt seen that impressive variety. But I'll keep an open mind until after its release for sure.

I can pretty confidently say No Man's Sky. There is no way in hell Uncharted 4 will be a "bad" game, at the worst it will be average. No Man's Sky on the other hand is either going to be really, really good or really, really bad. I don't really see an in between with it. The lack of any proper multiplayer or voice chat has me worried.

WorldEndsWithMe

You can't have multiplayer if everybody's universe is changing all the time.

Shauneepeak

World everyone is in the same universe they just said there is no way to group up, or share your coordinates with a friend to make an attempt at meeting up, they said you can VERY rarely see another player but that is less than a 1% chance and even then Sean Murray hates multiplayer so refuses to add voice chat.

They have EVERYTHING already in the game for it to be a fun multiplayer experience but due to Murray's stubbornness they refuse to add any proper form of multiplayer. I understand wanting to stick with your vision and all but seriously some of the responses they have given to people asking about it are very childish.

They said they "may" consider some form of multiplayer after launch, but this was stated like a year or more ago.

It's just going to really suck if the game fails within the first few weeks when if multiplayer had been in it could have thrived.

Worst case Uncharted 4 will be like Uncharted 3, unbelievable expectations, then fall short a bit, still a great game, but just not disappointment

@Shauneepeak,

I think World is right. Everything is randomly generated. Unless you link with another player from the beginning and travel together when you sign in. I don't see any possibility where you can meet your friend and decide to travel together half game.

WorldEndsWithMe
WorldEndsWithMe

Perhaps I'm confused then. Wouldn't that mean there is multiplayer even if you can find someone else?

Shauneepeak
Shauneepeak

There is "technically" multiplayer but there is no system in the game to actually support it. You can't see a person's name, can't share coordinates, there's no voice chat.
We were simply told if you DO happen to stumble across another player they will show up as a unique color on your minimap.

Except that, you know, this has been done since Diablo II, and probably even before that.

No Man's Sky easily. That game disappeared for almost 9 months- thought for sure it was going to emerge as a PS VR title. I'm very concerned this game won't be a good "game".

No man's sky easily. Everything they have shown for it hasn't been too full, like a lot of the planets they showed seemed pretty empty still and there isn't a story or anything, just go out and find new stuff. That said, I'm still excited for it.

Hopefully not, I'm gambling with a pre-order on it cuz I keep waiting for someone to make an impressive AAA this gen (Lots of impressive B games)but that's gonna be one helluva needle to thread after what's happened in development.

I think Horizon will be an A game. All games this gen have been the same as PS3 but better graphics. Nothing really shows its impossible on older platform. Like the way how MAG showed 256 players to showcase the processing power of PS3. I miss that "Only possible on the PS3" slogan.

WorldEndsWithMe
WorldEndsWithMe

Yeah I'm gonna gamble on Horizon too. I think it will be awesome gameplay I just worry over that story with GG at the helm. Maybe they secretly brought in real writers this time.

And to clarify, I wasn't saying both will suck. However if there isn't that "ah-ha!" moment that Uncharted 2 had I'll be disappointed.

Both look cool but Uncharted is Uncharted so I doubt it will disappoint. Especially since Straly and Druckman took over. No Man's Sky just looks interesting. Hard to tell if it's something I would like on the level of any of the franchises I abuse the sh*t out of.

Speaking of, I'm over 1,000 hours in MGSV. 😆 I've been fine tuning my SFV skills and I am less than 24 hours away from playing Twilight Princess for the 15th time but this time in HD and with amiibo.

Two very different games, hard to compare as in what is better. Both have huge potential to be great or let downs.

Rogueagent01

I doubt either will disappoint on the whole, they will just be disappointing to individuals that set there scopes to high. For example if someone is expecting U4 to be the greatest game of all time they will probably be disappointed, and for those wanting No Mans Sky to be Halo meets Star Wars they'll be disappointed as well.

If people go into the games with more realistic expectations than i don't see either being a disappointment. Uncharted will most likely finish strong seeing that they have taken good care of the franchise up until now. And if you think of No Mans Sky more like EVE online(minus large scale war) i think people will be pleasantly suprised at what they sent out to accomplish.

I must also say that this is an absurd article as the results could have been predicted by a blind chimpanzee.

MRSUCCESS

The question of the article will lead most people to say No Man's Sky.

No Man's Sky is something new while Uncharted has built a name for itself all these years.

yeah but Part 4 of anything is usually trouble and part 3 was no prize chicken.

Part 4 of anything is usually trouble? Which franchise are you referring to?

Who's really worried about Uncharted 4 possibly being a disappointment? When has Naughty Dog let anyone down? Sure part 3 wasn't as good as part 2 but it was a great game nevertheless.

This is coming from someone that's not all that excited about Uncharted 4 but recognizes it's a remarkable franchise.
