Back in January, we learned PlayStation 4 had surpassed 36 million in worldwide sales .
Now, according to a new DFC Intelligence report (as cited by MCV ), that number is gonna get a lot bigger.
In fact, the analysts believe PS4 will hit 100 million in overall sales before its life cycle ends. This would make it the 6th gaming console in history to reach the lofty mark, and it would also surpass its predecessor, as PlayStation 3 only managed to sell about 85-90 million (as did the Xbox 360). The reigning king is the incomparable PS2, which ended up selling a whopping 150 million units; though some have compared the PS4 to the PS2, it's very unlikely PS2's record will ever fall.
Additionally, the report says PS4 will hit 80 million by the end of 2019, which would outpace Xbox One sales by a very significant 40 percent. The arrival of PlayStation VR in 2016 could also "help the PS4 expand its audience over the next few years." Perhaps unsurprisingly, the report says digital game sales will continue to surge in the coming years, hitting $20 billion in annual revenue by 2019. Well, duh.
One interesting note: The DFC report believes Nintendo is still a "major player" and one to watch in the future. The mysterious NX console is on the horizon somewhere; perhaps it will make some serious waves…
