I still remember when Sony first announced the program that would be called "PlayStation Plus."

The response wasn't exactly overwhelmingly positive; in point of fact, there were a lot of hesitant and suspicious PlayStation fans out there. After all, we'd just come off a generation where we could always play online free of charge. Our whole world was changing!

To be honest, I never liked the idea at first. As someone who doesn't really play a lot online, I didn't feel like being roped into a paying membership that I wasn't sure I'd use often. I knew about the bonuses and other goodies but again, I couldn't be certain if I'd really take advantage. However, as it turns out, I'm very happy being a Plus member and I really do believe it's worth every penny. For $50/year, I have undoubtedly gotten my money's worth and then some; I love the monthly freebies, for instance, and the ongoing extra 10 percent discount is another nice little perk.

Yeah, I know I need it to play online but this membership feels less like "need" and more like "want," despite the fact that I spend little time with multiplayer games. That means the bonuses and perks alone are worth the cost of admission for me, so that's a darn good sign. What about you? What's your take on being a Plus member? I'd rate my satisfaction level at a solid 9, I think.

I don't use it to benefit me alot, but I'm absolutely satisfied with it. I have no problem paying for it. 9 out of 10.

Same here, 9 out of 10. It would be perfect to me if it cost a little bit less.

I'm on the same boat. If it had cost just a tad bit less, then it would've been a perfect 10 for me.

I went to play NHL 16 online coop with a friend who came over, was not able to play because he does not have PS+. That peeved me off. I have it, I should be able to use it. Overall I like it, I guess.

I'm not fond of the new layout. It's harder to navigate. However I'm not sure how it's gone downhill? I'm not arguing I'm sincere about wanting to know because I use it mainly to play online honestly. But when they have sales or discounts for PSPLUS users I usually jump on those. So from my perspective and my use, it more than serves it's purpose.

Well first off you didn't need it for online before the PS4 and from your comment it sounds like you did not pick up Plus until the PS4 came out. In the PS3 Era you could expect a AAA game every couple months, hell sometimes we got brand new games that were still $60 in stores just a month or two after they came out.

Since the PS4 launched I cannot think of a single AAA game through Plus on the PS4, Infamous First Light doesn't count.
The PS4 has been out long enough now that Sony could easily be giving us some older games hell there are even some bargain bin first-party games to throw our way now like Killzone or The Order. It's been Indie after Indie after Indie since the PS4 came out, even the PS3 side has tapered off a bit but at least it has been pretty good recently.

Oh for example I also have an Xbox and on Games with Gold in December we got Tomb Raider Definitive Edition then last month they gave us Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which is backwards compatible on the X1, in prep of the new one.
Also unlike PS+ through Games with Gold you actually own the games once purchased they are yours even if you lose Gold.
So PS3 era despite you losing the games once membership ran out PS+ was still kicking Gold's ass due to the sheer quality of the games Sony gave us but now that's not really the case.
If Plus wasn't required for online I probably wouldn't of even had it for this past year.

I agree, Shawneepeak. It does feel a little more bleak.

The two things for me I wonder about are:

1) Because it's now required for online, is there less of an effort to make the perks more appealing?

and

2) How much of it is due to PS+ coming out toward the end of the PS3 era when there's a much larger library?

When I bought it for PS3, I felt like it was worth it because I was getting a lot out of it. (And the library on my PS3 is huge because of it.) I was high on the PS and PS+ brands, if you will. Now I just feel like I have to have it so I can be online.

Well again I'm not arguing I just wanted to see how it affected those who use differently than I. Yeah I didn't purchase it until PS4 came out. That's true.

To be fair, the PS+ came out from middle to end of PS3. Plenty of full disc games came out. Heck, even now we see full PS3 games available each month. On the other hand, PS4 just came out 2 years, theres not that many games that can be available for free. Maybe another year, you'll see the 2-year old disc games available for free like the Ground Zero. So far PS+ on PS4 sucks for me. I have nothing but Indies which does not interest me enough to even spend the time to download it. I only download them because i read somewhere that the Indies get royalties by the download. It's my way of supporting them, but i'll never play these games.

Shauneepeak

Yeah Godsman I always try to grab the indies too for that very reason but there is also no reason Sony can't toss something like The Thief(Which I believe was free on Games with Gold before I activated mine), Killzone, or The Order you can find these used for as low as $10 nowadays. Killzone and The Order might not have been great but they were still pretty gorgeous, IMO The Order is still the very best looking game on consoles and arguably even the best looking game period PC included.

As for Underdog's #1 I feel we can say with a definite "yes" SEA is putting in less effort now that Plus is required, unsure about the Euro PS+ because I don't pay attention.

Hell if they don't want to give us free games why not just give us maybe 2 free rentals a month on PS Now or something along those lines?

Been without plus since November and since I dont play multiplayer I don't feel the need to re-up honestly. I'm missing out on free games but I feel this tremendous weight lifted off bc I don't have the backlog of free games anymore.

The only things I'm missing are the discounts and Rocket League. ūüôĀ

I give it an 8. Don't care for multiplayer. Like it for the games. First month paying for it, I had 2 games that justified it.

My main problem is that as long as you want to play your free plus games, you'll always have to pay for it. So if let's say you suddenly don't like the free games, you're still stuck paying $50 a year to play the games you do own. Let alone to keep paying to play multiplayer.

Well, I don't play online anymore (no time) so I actually don't need it. Last time I only bought it for 1 month because I needed help to platinum BB (just couldn't beat one boss myself). The dissoounts are nice touch though. 7/10.

1 out of 10. I save that money to just go and buy more games… No need to do ps plus or xbox live when you look at other membership programs like prime, gamer club, and even powerup rewards pro all pay for themselves.

Hopefully nintendo continues to offer their online for free, last major game system company left that is not charging.

Jawknee

I love Nintendo but if charging for online services helped fix some of the problems that I encounter I would gladly pay. Playing Smash Bros. online can be quite the pain in the ass. Especially since they punish you if you quit in the middle of a match. You're forced to sit through laggy matches just to avoid being banned for a limited time.

Please be aware that if there's another account with Plus on the same PS4, it grants access to other accounts.

They primary account on that ps4 must be had plus. If one of the psn accounts have plus and they put that ps4 as their primary, every other account on that ps4 can play online no problem.

Id say 7 out of 10. It's still a good value for its cloud saves, discounts, and free indie games. Indie games seem to be more worthwhile these days, even if I rarely touch many of them.

I suspect the discounts would still be good with or without PS Plus, but whatever. The online play itself shouldn't be forced for it either.

I do wish the free game licenses didn't end with your subscription expiration.

All in all PS Plus has gone downhill for me since the PS3 era. Back then they had to work harder to justify its value. And I seriously contemplated ditching PS Plus for good during this latest renewal phase. When free services like Steam and even Origin give you most of what PS Plus does it makes it hard to justify paying for it.

I think it's totally worth it just for the games, discounts and cloud storage alone. One thing I really like about it, is that it allows me to try games I wouldn't normally have paid much attention to. Some have turned out to be some good games and I would have never played them if it wasn't for Plus. Agree with other posters that we need some AAA games here and there like we got with PS3, but the indies have been good for the most part. We got Rocket League, which has eaten a ton of my time since last summer.

9/10 on PS3

8/10 since they started making it mandatory for online.

8 out 10. Unlike most PlayStation gamers i enjoy most of the Free ps4 games. Rocket League and HellDrivers being my favorites so far. Games being free gives me a chance to check them out and saves me the 29.99-19.99 price tag.

As others on here have commented, on PS3, PS+ was a big fat 9-10. The content they gave was a mixture of moderate-to-well-known indie goodness and high-budget well-known games.

Now, on PS4, I would rate PS+ as maybe a 3-5.

ALL the games offered on PS+ for the PS4 are little-to-moderately-known indie games, with almost 0 high-budget games being offered.

A stark reversal from the PS3 era, and is paling in contrast to the GwG offerings.

It does seem that the success of the PS4 is reducing Sony's incentive to try as hard with PS+ on the PS4.

And I say this as a multi-platform owner, but primarily a PlayStation gamer.

6. It shouldn't be needed to play online. The "Free" games are now all but worthless. There's almost no free avatars or themes like there should be.

The only redeeming feature left is the big discounts on sales. And I have to consider that I'm buying games I normally wouldn't because of that, which can be both good and bad. Half I can't play.

Is it worth the cost? Yes, but it's more of an online feature hostage holder than a service at this point.

matt99

The discounts aren't enough in my opinion. Every game should be discounted, especially considering they're charging the same for the physical copies as they are the digital.

Underdog15

For us it's discounted from in store purchases in canada. We don't have to pay tax on PSN bought games.

Mind you, stores here will start dropping prices before PSN does, and we already pay an extra $10 because of the dollar difference. (New games here are $79.99)

In my province, the combined tax rate is 13%. In a store, on a brand new game, I'd have to pay an extra $10.40. On PSN, it's straight up $79.99

Honestly even with the big discounts on PS4 I can usually run down to Gamestop or a locally owned gaming store and get them for less, biggest temptation I saw this year was the Ultimate Imperial Edition of TESO for I think it was only $40 or $50 sadly couldn't spend the money at the time.
The only games I have purchased digitally have been for Vita, the odds of finding a hard-copy of good Vita RPG or one of the more niche Japanese games for under $20 is next to none while I managed to pick up all of the Atelier and Neptunia games, aside from Noire's, for around $5-8 a piece.

Underdog15,
Like I had said before, It really sucks that you guys have to pay so much more.

I try to read a book a day & I'm always noticing that there's almost always an average $3 higher difference for Canada, than our US price(& my own New Jersey's 7% state tax which I think is too f'ing high as it stands now).

Underdog, are you from Ontario? The price of games plus tax is ridiculous there (I live in the UK for school but I still buy from the Canadian PSN) which is why I buy digital most of the time.

Yeah, I'm in Ontario. I never have to pay tax on PSN though. We have an HST (Harmonized Sales tax) which combines the GST (federal) and PST (Provincial) into one. Combined, it's 13%… which sucks.

9/10 – Had it since Day 1 on PS3. Played many free games for PS3/Vita/PS4. Also every game save is on cloud so I don't need a backup. My current favorite is Rocket League! Would be 10 if it wasn't mandatory to enable playing online and able to keep the free games after subscription expiration. As long as the price stays the same or less I'll keep it active indefinitely.

Never understand the logic of getting something for "free" as long as you pay for a subscription…

Underdog15
Underdog15

It's not difficult to understand. It's a question of value. If the value to you is significantly greater than the cost, then it's easy to assign free to games and cost to the subscription.

If you only see money as something to buy things with, then it's impossible to understand. So it's a question of perspective, in other words.

Jawknee

Because PS+ only cost $50 a year and I downloaded $500+ worth of games that were "free" on the PS3 when the free games were still good.

DocPain

Concept of value fully understood, no need to be condescending

My point is the wrong terminology just to make something seem more attractive. It's a form of false advertising imo
It's an "included benefit", not a "free" one

Underdog15
Underdog15

It wasn't condescending. You genuinely didn't seem to know why they would use the word, "free". You only think it's condescending because you felt I should instinctively have known you were right. (You aren't. I merely tried to help.) Just because I made a comment devoid of emotion doesn't mean it's designed to be an attack. That is up to how you choose to interpret the message. I suspect deciding to feel like it was condescending helps you deal better with a contradiction to your opinion. So I'm sorry you chose to feel that way.

But no, it's not an incorrect use of the term, "free". You may choose to download or not to download free games. You have a one month window to opt for a free title. If you miss the window, you don't get the game for free.

If the service was to provide access to games, you'd be right. But it isn't. That service is called "Playstation Now" and in that situation, you'd be correct. It's a perk for members. It's not even the primary selling point. They are perfectly within their right to market these games as "free for members of Plus".

Definition of free is an exemption from payment.

If something has to be subscribed to by form of a payment, nothing that comes with it is free. It's an included/added benefit.

Cat chasing it's tail argument here. At the end of the day, what I'm saying is correct. However it doesn't mean I don't understand your perspective clearly.

matt99
matt99

On the ps3 it was fantastic, we got great AAA games for free and it wasn't required to play online. Now with ps4 it's required to play online, the "freebies" aren't the same, and I haven't been interested in any of the "free" games. Also it seems like it's only small indie games that are free, which is nice but it's not worth the subscription. So on ps3 it was 9/10, ps4 it's about 6/10.

matt99
matt99

Actually I just remembered driveclub…4/10. They promised driveclub as a free launch game with ps4. The game released a year late at full price, with a ps plus version releasing about 8 months later. A version which was only a glorified demo that was taken down from the store less than 6 months later. This is not a reflection on the developers as the game itself is quite enjoyable but its release is just one example of whats gone wrong with ps plus.
