The Inside Tech Scoop On Quantic’s E3 Demo, The Dark Sorcerer

Here's a scary thought: That amazing Quantic Dream tech demo, The Dark Sorcerer , didn't even utilize the full development toolkit for the PlayStation 4.

A somewhat noisy E3 camera video shot by YouTube user TheAireaidLord (as spotted by DualShockers ) shows Quantic Dream QA Manager Gavin Niebel, who is relaying a lot of compelling behind-the-scenes details.

That demo has no pre-rendering, post-production or video inserts, and represents "only the first iteration" of the studio's development cycle for the PS4. It runs between 30 and 90FPS as the frame rate hasn't been fully optimized just yet, but it does it all at a native 1080p resolution, textures included. And it was built with the PS3 development tools they've already utilized for Beyond: Two Souls . Therefore, can you imagine what that might look like once Quantic has their hands on the full PS4 dev kit…?! That's gonna be insane .

The set in that presentation is comprised of a ridiculous one million triangles, and the volumetric lighting is completely dynamic between the "movie" and "studio" conditions. Maurice the Gobline is made up of 700,000 triangles, 40 different shaders, 150 megs of texture data, and 388 different bones. Lastly, all of this was accomplished by using only 4GB of GDDR5 RAM of the available 8GB in the PS4. Impressive stuff.

I think Quantic Dream deserves awards just for their tech demos.

one thing thats making me really worried about next gen systems.
they seem so far off from being ready, and there suppose to be releasing in only 5 months!
so much of the content thats been shown off just seems really early prototypes, nothing like what you would expect from devs who supposedly have had dev kits for these systems for 2+ years!
KZSF for instance, GG are still saying the demo running at E3 is still running off the old kits they havent gotten a new build running for the final dev kits yet.
and there going to do that in 5 months, when this build took them 2+ years?
yea, good luck with that!
everything just seems to be REALLY far behind schedule!
and after seeing what happened with the wiiu, it would be a massive shame to see that happen here as well……..

The demo was mind blowing if it was indeed running in real-time. Definitely on the better side of the uncanny valley. Oh, I wish so much that by the time I buy the PS4, when the price drops (where i live, it costs double after currency conversion, and we don't nearly earn as much as our 1st world counterparts), games have such graphics. Given the kind of graphical fidelity MGS5 Phantom Pain showed, it seems like this wish may be fulfilled.

To me, this was one of the most impressive things shown at the Sony E3 conference. Lighting, facial expressions, color pallet, textures, mo-cap…all of it was top notch. Even more impressive they were able to achieve such high fidelity using 'last-gen' game engine designed for a completely different architecture.

Definitely can't wait to see what they can do after optimization and dipping into the extra 3GB memory pool.

So is Beyond coming to PS4? Even if I have to wait a bit longer, i'd rather experience it in 1080p.

This was actually my favorite demo of E3, and sadly like always with QD it's not even a game 🙁

7GB of free RAM the ps4's OS uses 1gb. Though the Xbone's OS uses 3GB. lol.
