Oh, let's just forget all this "PlayStation 4 vs. Xbox One" stuff and revel in the fact that it's good (and necessary) for the video game industry.

It's also good for retailers. For example, did you know that the new next-gen consoles helped the video game arm of Amazon post its largest pre-order week ever ? I'm not surprised.

As the retailer just reported , pre-orders were definitely spiking last week: At "peak demand," Amazon customers were ordering more than 2,500 PS4 and Xbox One consoles every minute. It was also revealed that E3 week hardware pre-orders jumped 4,000 percent year-over-year. Well, that only makes sense; we were at the tail end of a generation life cycle during E3 2012 and this year, two new consoles were fully unveiled.

Oh, and day-one pre-orders for the two consoles was almost double that of all video game sales during Black Friday 2012 at Amazon. That's pretty ridiculous, isn't it? Everyone's excited!

I just hope Sony can keep up with the demand. I don't think they were expecting such a large pre-order.

They won't, but they'll do a better job than MS (unless people see the X180 for what it is and cancel pre-orders).

Not to mention Microsoft being six months behind schedule. They are trying to beat Sony to the punch but, at what cost?

@sawao MS rushed the 360 to get a year head start on Sony. Now they are rushing the 180 to launch in the same window as Sony.

RRoD will likely not be a thing of the past.

Just goes to show how gaming has grown among society. Old folks from the late 1900's gaming in today's generation and teenagers this generation all gaming. I wasn't really alive long enough to see those "geeks" that were few and far between. But I did live long enough to see the number of gamers grow from hundreds to millions. I'm sure other websites like Best Buy etc, are seeing big preorder numbers as well.

To the newcomers. Jump In. To the gamers already gaming, Greatness Awaits and BEYOND!

Things is "gaming" has been around since humans were sitting in a cave and looked at one and thought … geez this is boring and started painting on caves walls and try to get fellow tribes people to experience what they experienced. lol. Not so interactive, but I am sure exciting at the time. Gaming has a long history.

Its always been mainstream and popular. It just comes in many forms. Video games are just another form and relatively new to all other forms.

EVERYONE is a gamer. You just pick the genre or form it comes in… and enjoy. Its no longer cool to a be "gamer" because … like I said… we are all doing it. Embrace and be merry. We are all still kids… some of us with some added years. 🙂

Keep Playing… as I always say.

Agreed the industry supposedly is suffering. Not sure thats because lof ack of excitement by gamers or just poor game choices to develop by Devs. I mean there is always an excuse. I think maybe its called a recession which everyone is trying to pull themselves out of.

BUT with blockbuster movies and I guess the gaming industry, peoples drive for escapism from reality definitely.. most definitely helps the economy and without question helps those industries as well. No matter the cost it hits them with. Some may disagree but when Star Wars came out in the 70's, economics were not exactly great and it helped people get out of the daily rut and gave people… hope?

If I was to compare the pre-orders of the "next gen" consoles to previous pre-orders… I would compare to the pre-orders for current gen consoles back in 2006-2007. I would be interested if the excitement back then is what it is now. I presume Amazon was offering the console at launch then. I don't recall whether they did or not or if there were deals with the pre-orders as well.

At any rate, good on Amazon. I wonder how many of those purchases are business buying bulk and then selling them at inflated prices on eBay or kijiji if supplies in stores sell out. Hopefully Sony will deflate those entrpeneurs by having ample stock for retailers.

Geez it would be funny if the big guys actually started number the consoles so people could say this console was number 17 out 35,000. Wait…. better not give them ideas.

Keep Playing!

Yah, you right about ebay, I remember seeing the top good sellers starting there bid prices down to .99 cents among selling the PS3's/60GB version before. I use to bid and see if I could win one but ended up empty handed every time.

I'd preorder. wouldn't want to end up paying 600 because I couldn't/didn't preorder my console.

Didn't the makers of Angry Birds declare consoles were dead? Lol

We hear that every generation. I honestly believe consoles will never die. They will evolve. There will always be room for dedicated gaming machines.

Even though I am getting a ps4, I would still love to play Titanfall for the Xbox one. Damn that game looks off the charts. It is easily the best game of E3 imo.

I too want to play TitanFall. Definitely plan to check it out on PC.

Besides, when the exclusivity deal dries up the game will make its way to PS4 and likely run better. PS4 has Faster RAM, More RAM, Higher Clock Speed, higher raw performance -AND- easier architecture when compared to the Xbox One.

PS4 already holds the #2 spot for Best Selling Video Game Product of 2013 on Amazon!

Xbox One? in 7th place. Not bad.

Call them as well if the price doesn't show up. The phone rep are still honoring the deal. How long? Don't know.

I've been on the fence about getting one on launch day because of the enormous back log I have for PS3. Hope I haven't made a mistake by not preordering yet.

Don't sweat it. Don't the consumerism mantra get the better of you. You know, gotta have it, gotta have it now, even if I don't need it. There will be plenty of PS4's in the months to follow launch. Its not like they are only going to produce so many PS4's and drop it to focus on something else… other than the second rendition of the PS4.

Besides, a number of the games will not be launching until next year anyway. Specifically Second Son if thats you game. Save the money, let it collect a bit of interest… you never know what will happen in the next 6 months or so.

Keep playing… on your PS3!

Since you said you have enormous backlog, imo I'd wait. PS4 at 400 bucks, it may be a heck of a deal for what you get, imagine years from now how much the PS4 would be. You'll be occupied for a while and see the good ol' price drop later on, then make your move.

My massive backlog of PS3 games, and not so massive backlog of Vita games had no impact at all on my pre-order of the PS4.

Paid off all the way, baby!

Outside of Quantum Break and TitanFall I'm not really interested in what MS has shown to this point. Can't wait for PS4 though. Killzone: Shadow Fall, Watch_Dogs, NBA 2K14 and Drive Club. Should be a great day one. Then hopefully inFamous: Second Son and The Order: 1886 will be out not much later.

did you know water is wet?
fire is hot?
of course next gen consoles have given retailers their biggest preorder week ever, there so freaking overdue!
people are clamoring for next gen consoles like a 10 year old kid addicted to crack!
exactly why its so disappointing when theres so few games that are truly next gen.
why do we need so many games as cross generation?
just goes to show how mass production has destroyed the industry!
normally when new systems release theres heaps of MP games to entice people into buying them, simply because they want to entice people into new homes, and developers want the shackles lifted off them.
now its $$$$$$$, $$$$$$$, and more $$$$$$!
F*CK EVERYTHING besides $$$$$$$$$!!!!!!!!!!!
