Yeah, that sounds about right.

During Sony's PlayStation Experience event over the weekend, the world was given a glimpse of Final Fantasy VII Remake gameplay . But the news didn't end there.

They've just announced that the game won't release as a standard single product, but rather as a "multi-part series." The company didn't go into detail but obviously, this sounds like an episodic approach, perhaps similar to the Hitman plan , another Square Enix product ( Life is Strange was also episodic). For Hitman , players will pay the full price up front and then get the roll-outs later free of charge.

They say each part of the Remake will offer "its own unique experience" but we have no specifics right now. Well, if there's one way to ruin the cohesiveness and immersion of one of the most revered and epic RPGs of all time, this probably qualifies.

Man, you Square Enix guys are just top-shelf.

Okay, that's not good at all. That's a really, really bad sign of taking shortcuts.

I really don't like episodic games, I know they are all the rage and work okay with stuff like Life is Strange but not like Resident Evil Revelations 2 or Afro Samurai 2.

So, this sucks, it means they can release a part and then wait a year for the next.

I warned you guys. Now we are not only gonna miss on at least half of the original game content, we are getting only the MONEY PARTS of the story as EPISODES so SE can make some cash.

They must be in bed with Bungie and Activision. I believe I am done with SE.

Smh!! This is disappointing news and it doesn't make sense… Maybe this is why footage was shown so quickly after the announcement. I believe more details should of been included….

I remember Nomura once talked about Versus releasing in parts I didn't like the idea then.

But isn't every episode like a medium length RPG at around 40-50hrs or so?
I HIGHLY doubt that is anywhere close to what Square is planning with this one.

I will wait for the complete version then.I can't stand stuff like telltale games that have episodes scattered all over the place with it having a finale some day.

Problem with episodic games is that each episode must be wrapped up and then end with a cliffhanger to keep the game interesting.

Lets find out what they mean first. I am thinking it's possible they meant a spin-off like FFXIII-2 to continue the story because it's so popular.

I suggest we start some petition to make LOTS of noise on the internet. Once they DO decide to go episodic it's too late to change. Anyone know how to start one?

Temjin001

Yep. It could very well mean a series of games as they've done with FFXIII and FFX.
This may actually be good news.
It's fun watching everyone freak though, don't you think?

Temjin001

I've read some updated news. Yea, it looks like they're breaking apart the game and selling each disc for $60.
So basically FFVII on PSX would've been $150 by this logic =p

I can now – officially – say that I am concerned. I will not say that this guarantees disaster… but it most definitely takes wind out of the sails. One thing to consider, though, is the scope of the FFVII game world. If it is their plan to recreate literally every locale in the game maybe it makes sense to do an episodic release. MAYBE. I don't know though, what with not being a game designer. Though this news has certainly given me reason to be apprehensive, I am still equally as anxious. While I agree that this could result in immersion hiccups, perhaps they have a formula that is going to make everything tie in well enough. Or maybe they really are going to just completely drag it through the glass- and piss-filled mud. At this point, all we can do is wait and see. Pissing and moaning optional.

Jawknee

In an interview I saw posted in the comments at Kotaku, or maybe IGN, what you're saying sounds close to their reasoning. Sounds like they don't want to be forced to cut anything. But still, if they plan on selling this, chapter by chapter, it's going to screw up the whole flow of the game. Not cool.

WorldEndsWithMe
WorldEndsWithMe

They probably looked at how massive the world of FFXIII Versus is and saw that it'd take 12 years so decided to work on and finish the game while pieces of it were still out since Versus could have begun to release in episodes a year or two ago and now nobody wants to buy it.

Jawknee
Jawknee

If they mean episodic in the sense that MGS5 is, fine, but this doesn't sound like that. It sounds like they're going to chop it up like RE Revelations 2. Totally kills the excitement I had after seeing the latest trailer. Unreal.

WorldEndsWithMe
WorldEndsWithMe

Doesn't kill mine but does dampen in. When I play an episode I then move on and rarely get back to finish the game no matter how excited I get for the next episode right after completing the first. Months or a year later I don't even recall how things went in the first episode, and I imagine there will be many changes to FFVII.

I believe they mean separate parts like the original came on separate discs, but that is still crap to release them at different times. Disc space obviously is no problem with Blu Ray and SE has not made anything incredibly huge filled with tons of content and locals since FF9.

FF10 and every FF after have been significantly smaller, lacking features and limited which is why I called the game overrated.

They just want to milk the game because they know their loyal fans (why are you people still fans?) will lap it up like a cat on milk. By doing this they can sell each one for $60 plus and have several collector's editions going up to $150 and you same people complaining will still buy the crap, bit not me.

I have been done with Square since that abomination known as FF13 and I never looked back. Square Anus stinks and sucks hog balls and have for almost a decade now. If Konami did not exist than Square would be the worse company in gaming.

Even EA and Activision (though greedy) produce better games than Square Anus. BAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I am not even surprised as Square Anus is the type of company to do something like this. Still no release date for FF15 and KH3, but they are steady announcing new projects to keep you people roped in.

Ben this it's SE reasoning for doing this : “If we took everything that’s in the original game and remade it at that quality, we couldn’t get it all on a single release,”

Hilarious how the original game also had that problem and they fixed it with the use of multiple discs, maybe that solution and develop a new FF entry with the turns system now it's considered a cyber sin on SE lol.

I'm not gonna flip out just yet. FF VII is a huge game and if they're going to recreate it all at today's standards of quality, maybe this is just how it has to be done. As long as each chapter is a part of the same game. As long as I can travel with my party, items, and stats throughout the entire adventure and back again. I'll be okay with that.

I'm willing to sit back and give SE a temporary pass on this one. I mean, we've all been crying for a FF VII remake for years and they've finally listened. Lets give it some time before we burn them at the stake for it.

I like to watch the freakouts and would join them if there was anything to freak out about but so far it looks great. I may be jumping to conclusions about all the goodies being in the menu rather than on the lame face buttons but if I'm right that'll be killer.

Make no mistake. The episodic nature is probably just to stagger the release, make more money, and have it out long before it's done.

None of those are dealbreakers if it's as cool as it looks.

I usually try to be optimistic with square, but I don't like this idea either. All it tells me is that it'll probably be overly linear, too short overall and that I can't revisit old areas. yeah, I would have just preferred a remade and polished up version of the original now. Damn.
