Should Gamers Wait For Bethesda To Fix Fallout 4 Problems?

Disclaimer: Due to embargo restrictions, I'm in no way confirming or denying the recent reports about serious FPS drops in the PlayStation 4 version of Fallout 4 .

No, this is a purely hypothetical question for the more patient gamers out there.

So far this generation, we've seen a disappointing – and strangely ongoing – trend of games being released with lots of stability and general technical problems. Just about every last one of them is an open-world adventure but whatever, I digress. The point is that a lot of games have significant issues when they first arrive, but those issues do disappear with patches and updates over time. Of course, this hardly means we should give developers a pass, but the bottom line is that lots of games are simply far better a few months after they first launch.

Perhaps the most obvious example of this in 2015 was The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt . Frankly, that was a 9.5 game without the bevy of ridiculous and unfortunate problems that plagued the experience right out of the gate. And I'm hardly picky; I'm willing to tolerate a lot more than most reviewers in this category. That should tell you just how unstable CD Projekt Red's game was back in May. Then, after four or five massive updates, we ended up with a vastly improved gameplay experience, and one of the reasons why I thought the recently released Hearts of Stone expansion was worthy of that lofty 9.5 score.

That's not the only example, either. And if – repeat: if – what is being said about Fallout 4 is true, perhaps gamers would be well advised to wait before purchasing. It would send a clear-cut message to developers that it is not okay to release shoddy products simply because we now have the option to fix the product after it comes to market. No, that's not okay and impatient consumers shouldn't keep rewarding such behavior. On the flip side, if it can be concluded that the issues have been over-exaggerated, or you believe said issues won't bother you so much, go ahead and buy it.

I'm just asking that people be responsible consumers. You know, for once.

Nowadays you might as well wait a few months and buy the game in digital form. Don't bother with the physical disc as it only contains the game in beta and you'll just end up downloading the game's worth in patches and updates anyway.

You'd think that but somehow the digital verserions are the exact same piece of bullsh*t. I know from experience.

I guess, but at least that way you won't be stuck with a useless disc.

Hey, just got to put my 2 cents in here…..

A disc will "NEVER" become useless

Because I can resell any of my discs, or even pass it along to a bud if I chose to, and for the rest of my life I might add.

But do let me know when you actually become able to do that with any one of your digitals, now or anytime in the future.

True but you'll always have a broken game unless you have internet access. Even then, and as I've said it before. You'll end up downloading the full gamesworth in patches and updates.

There are backup solutions for digital games. Where you can back up your fully patched game in an external HDD. Those are the future bookshelves.

I'm not a digital purist. I don't like owning my console games in digital form, except for Wii U because Nintendo don't let you install disc based games on to the memory/HDD. But when you have developers modifying almost half of their game, then what's the point in owning the disc if you aren't even getting the "final" release? I would understand if you could get your hands on a fully patched game on physical form but…how?

In addition, atleast in the UK, the physical games are almost always a good 20% cheaper than the digital versions; Which is absolutely crazy.

This gap widens the longer a game has been out, ignoring occasional PSN sales.

To what purpose? PS4 the better piece if pc hardware so it won't run any better on x1.

X1 is having the same problems. It's not just the PS4 version. PS4 version is still the best of the console versions. PC is the best all around version. As far as RotTR it looks like it's getting stellar reviews. A worthy purchase. I am really looking forward to the PS4 Definitive Edition in 2016.

I'm too old to care. I've played the super original Halo 1 on Dreamcast, imagine how fast that went. So if Fallout 4 comes in at a 6 frames per second I say bring it on.

Well I was watching streams of Fallout 4 for a large portion of the day yesterday and only time I saw a heavy FPS on both the PS4 ad X1 was when there was a group of Bloatflies chasing and shooting the player.

Also I thought the NDA lifted today?

And Bam! Official reputable source confirming Fallout 4 runs far better on PS4 over the X1.

"Each has their blips, but having tested two separate Xbox One and PS4 consoles, the results are always the same across the world at large; we get sizeable stutters on Microsoft's console that aren't present on PS4.

It may only be momentary, but it sticks out like a sore thumb in direct comparison. The cause is also often very self-evident; even with an installation size of 28GB, assets are struggling to stream from Xbox One's HDD on cue. We see noticeable hitches when simply walking around the world – but also just before cut-scenes take place, or switching to a new gun via the d-pad. During battle, reaching for a weapon that hasn't been used for a long spell prompts anything from a split-second hitch to a prolonged hiccup that can really disrupt the flow of a shootout. Added to that, the stutter from a newly drawn weapon (or throw of a Molotov cocktail) often coincides with a delayed sound effect in its first use.

On repeat tests we were taken aback by disparity we saw. Even on multiple re-tests, using the same enemies, weather and lighting conditions, each Xbox One console we try has similar, and obvious issues streaming in data effectively – where it doesn't manifest to nearly the same extent on PS4. "

The game is probably good enough that they don't really need to fix the framerate issues, because they aren't jarring enough to render it unplayable. Most reviewers and players will give them a pass anyways, given the awesome story.

Personally, I think they need to hire new artists to give it a new look. They need to especially work on facial art and animation. They've always been horrible in Fallout games.
