Everyone's lovin' the PlayStation 4 right about now. And as a result, the system appears to have a rosier future.

After a press briefing following Sony's favorable E3 presentation, the company announced that they've raised internal sales expectations for the PS4.

PlayStation boss Andrew House didn't give any numbers, but it's clear that Sony has noticed the overwhelmingly positive response to their upcoming console. With no DRM and no online access required (two announcements that got the most applause during Sony's E3 conference), plus a price tag that's $100 cheaper than the Xbox One, Sony has a right to be optimistic. It also helps that many developers have come forward to say the PS4 has as much as 50% more raw potential than Microsoft's machine.

Currently on Amazon, PS4 pre-orders continue to beat out the Xbox One, although things may be neck and neck at GameStop (at least, that's what my local GameStop said today). House also wanted to make it plain that at this point, "demand may well outstrip supply," which I hope isn't the case. They need a lot of these things available for the holiday season, damnit.

Funny, when i went in to try and get The Last of Us early today, its the opposite over here. PS4 is sold out in my area while xbox still has tons of open reservations. By the way, i couldnt convince him to give me TLOU early. 🙁

Over by me (Det Michigan) my local GS said Xbox sold out in a few hours after their announcement. I apparently was one of the first few who came in and pre-ordered the PS4 and this was Saturday morning around 10:15am. I havnt been back in to check (which i need to change one of my games i pre-ordered) but from the news, and i'm pretty sure it was from here, is that GS is re-upping their pre-orders.

My gamestop is pretty unbiased when it comes out MS vs Sony…least to me they are straight forward about what they think is the best in their minds.

Good for Sony tho! I have high hopes for them along with everyone else. But you are right Ben, they need to have shelves on shelves on shelves of those systems for this holiday.

The Gamestop where I work had over 3 times the pre-order allotment of PS4s to Xboners. The Xboners sold out in a couple hours. I got paid Friday, and I pre-ordered the PS4 that would mark us at between 1/4 to 1/3 sold through our allotment. When you look at the number of units, they were close to neck in neck. I've personally been pushing for PS4 (more so now that mine is securely pre-ordered! XD ). The thing I notice is that Xbox 360 fans tend to dismiss the Sony claims, calling Sony liars and saying their claims are inaccurate, that Microsoft ain't doing those things Sony claims they are, or that Sony is doing exactly the same as Microsoft, claiming they are leaving the decisions up to the developers, thus both systems have the same DRM policies…

I see a lot of denial, a lot of bargaining, and a lot of anger. Not one has "believed" the developer statements that PS4 is 50% more powerful under the GPU hood, claiming it as "unsubstantiated rumor mongering".

I let them know they can always cancel their Xbone pre-orders, with no penalty, and apply it to a PS4 pre-order, as we still have a nice large allotment of PS4 pre-orders, 3-4 times more than Microsoft "graced" us with! XD

Ben, can you perhaps provide a link to the developer comments regarding the increased power of the PS4? I'd like to have those in a bit more context. (For my own edification, not because I doubt you, natch.)

Two more technical articles on the AMD APU architecture, how Sony has customized it and how it works with the systems memory.

I made up my mind a little while back to get the PS4 at launch and I'm glad I didn't hesitate with pre-ordering. I wasn't quite expecting the pre-orders to sell out in less than a day, but I felt like a shortage was going to happen. I hope they're able to increase production to meet the demand.

I know I wasn't tripping when I saw a multiplat game advertised at E3 for the Xbox360, Xbox one, and PS4 with no PS3 logo listed. It looks like some third party developers might stop producing games for PS3 altogether, but still include the Xbox360.

Hmm perhaps I should have pre-ordered regardless. There is nothing I have to have day 1 but if the demand is that high I doubt I'll be able to wait for a price drop. Maybe I'll jump on it if I see a decent bundle like a 2nd controller or free game… or when they announce a release date for KH3.

I got my "launch edition" pre-order in at Amazon right after the E3 conference. I can't wait! I feel a launch party coming on 🙂

No time to get complacent Sony! Fill those orders and then some. The hype is behind PS4 and the hate is strong with the Xbone so let's knock the pretender to the throne off and make room for someone worthy.

Our local GS, who are self described xbox fan boys, informed me that the PS4 was outselling the Xbone 2 to 1. Given we're located near Microsofts Hq I would gather they have a slight problem….

I haven't yet pre-ordered and I doubt I will as I am still thoroughly enjoying my PS3 and 360. I will however be buying the PS4 at some point and avoiding the XBone like it's got the plague.

I can't justify £350 (plus what is looking like an extra £10 per game) until I see something on the PS4 which blows me away compared to the best games on the PS3.

Do you think we are going to have to go through the same crap that we have this gen? If Sony's console is more capable than MS, are the devs going to dumb down the multiplats or do you think that they will make a stand for the PS4. Here is the next game boys and girls, it will be running on both next gen consoles, but since the PS4 is technically better it will look, or run, or both better on the PS4.

I'm thinking no. It's not just more capable, they are incredibly similar to program for. Very different relationship this time around, with only 1st parties basically bothering to actually program for the PS3 properly for most of this generation.

That's why a lot of multiplats had huge game installations and poor performance, problems even, they were ported absolutely horribly.

@Huey,
The hardware architecture for PS4 and XB1 are practically identical, with the PS4 having faster RAM and some slight alterations.
So, I wouldn't worry about this gen games being too different from each other. If anything, it'll be smoother (less hiccups) on the PS4 because of the faster RAM.

"Do you think we are going to have to go through the same crap that we have this gen?"

NO. Period.

@Big6: They are actually not that identical. Check out the link I gave to TheAgingHipster further up here. To what degree the higher performance of the PS4 will matter is another discussion. But the difference is indeed there.

hope they will be able to conjure up a high number of systems on launch, especially since there committing to a worldwide 2013 release, supplies going to be under allot of pressure.
and hopefully they are not using a apple 2 as their server like ninty did for the wiiu launch, man that was a freaking disaster!

I have mine preordered with Best Buy. I have this gut feeling though that Best Buy won't get enough to fill all the preorders. I think it's because I've dealt with it for every other system in the past.

Since the next GT and Project CARS are both on the PS3, I am in no hurry to get a PS4. It is likely that I will get one before the following GT is released, of course, but I will be buying based on need, not want.

Amazon (not just a local store) says the sales ratio is 3:2 in favour of the PS4.

i never buy systems day1 though honestly Sony shouldn't higher their expectations they should calmly look at the Pre orders and make adjustments to how many are being shipped out

now reason i say Sony shouldn't higher their expectations its always better to undrr estimate what you think will sell than over estimate and get half of what you shipped out

you do want a decent amount of your product still in stores so lets say your expectations are 1 million sales world wide youd ship out 1.1million or 1.2million
but you wouldn't expect those extras to Sell right away but incase theres more people than you thought buying it there is a decent amount of extras out there
