The crowd just went nuts.

Why? Because SCEA president Jack Tretton has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will fully support used games and won't impose any restrictions or limitations, and the system will not be required to be hooked up online to play games.

Tretton did take a little jab by saying we won't have to perform the 24-hour online "check-ins" the Xbox One will require. Furthermore, Tretton also confirmed that current PlayStation Plus subscriptions will indeed carry over into the next generation; if you're already a member, you'll be set for the PS4. And if you hate DRM, you're probably a big fan of what Tretton just said, and you were one of those applauding like mad.

Of course, PlayStation is all about gaming and they continue to prove that with every passing minute. But the show isn't over yet! The only downside is that you need a Plus subscription to play online, which is definitely unfortunate, and bound to get bad press.

I'm a little upset that they made it so that you need a plus membership to play multiplayer, other than that though I've been very happy so far. Loved the little jabs at the Xbox too

Yeah, that was a bit of a letdown from an otherwise wonderful presentation.

You don't expect Sony to place basic stuff like that behind a paywall.

A willing compromise for all this especially the value of PS+ which I need to get.

thinking about it though i guess its not all bad since i don't play alot on multiplayer. If i find a game where i wanna lay the multiplayer, like Killzone, I'll probably just pick up a month or two worth of membership just for that game

must've missed that. i've been in and out.

I was beginning to think Jack Tretton was going to close tonight by saying "and we promise the PS4 won't be a disaster like the Vita was. Good NIGHT and thank you!"

That was a great moment, I'm glad there's no check-in. The internet here in the US is too bad to make those kind of moves. BUT now we have to fear third party DRM measures even if PS4 doesn't require them. In any case first party games won't be lame that way.

I wonder if PS3 will still have online multiplayer free since PS4 won't?

Good question. If I need ps+ for my ps3, I'm screwed. I'm broke as broke can possibly be broke 🙁

PS4 doesn't have free multiplay? Sucky. I only play fighting games online too =(
I suppose seeing that fighting games are going 'free to play' it ends up a wash, eh? =)

Awesome! Not that I buy used games, but I see their place in the market….it'll be hard to just take that away.

Nice that your PS Plus subscriptions carry over! Makes me happy to be a part of it now 😀

Advantage: Sony. I can't want to walk into Gamestop and see an entire wall of PS4 games and maybe one shelf of Xbone games.

WorldEndsWithMe

Actually there will be tons of Xbone games because nobody will buy them once traded in.

Kryten1029a
Kryten1029a

But can it be sold more than once? If I loaned you an Xbone game, you couldn't transfer it to someone else or even give it back to me. I wouldn't want to be the register jockey who has to explain to the customer that they can't trade their game in because it was already resold once.

Is the Xbox One selling at $500 because Kinect is a must?

Temjin001
Temjin001

yes, they're forcing you to buy the Kinect. The hardware is also very much a PC. I have no worries that my PC will run just fine any multiplat for quite some time. THis is sort of nice because I can't afford a PS4 just yet so my PC will bridge that gap quite nicely.

Gregory Freeman

>forcing you to buy a kinect

and the ps4 eye costs so much less why?

All I hope is that I don't require PS+ to access netflix.. If I do get the cash to buy a ps4, it will only be the ps4. Same way I bought the ps3. Buy the console, play demos, save for games.

PS+, although inexpensive, Isn't looking like too much of a possibility for me at $510CAD (including taxes) for the console and plus. I use my buddy's netflix, so that doesn't cost me. If I need to pay the $50 to access something I have access to for free, I'll be a little upset. Then again, unless they carry over the p2p aspect of PS+ to the PS3, I can always just use my ps3. If that changes though, my SNES will have a new room mate.

That's a bit disappointing to hear the news about the plus subscription being required for online play, but I plan on renewing mine as soon as I can afford to anyway, so it's not a huge deal to me. I only game online with friends, anyway.

Other than the glitch in a of the demos, they are demos after all, this totlally shocked me. The ENTIRE event. I really thought Sony was going to come close to doing what MS is doing, but… WOW!

I hope there is more good news to come in the next few days, weeks and a months.

Well done Sony, and you know what, your presenters seems more… human and own to earth when talking to the audience and reacting to them. Thats what I like to see… the connection.

Anyway, in as much I won'y be buying at launch… geez… I will be looking on with envy.

Great job Sony!

Keep Playing!

Meh, they did the gamers a huge service with this announcement.

Watching the conference I'm not sure if they actually said you will have to have ps+ in order to play online did they?

It would be nice if they kept it the same as the Ps3 but if not meh not big deal. So far the games on the PS4 that interest me the most are SP games.

I admit im surprised on the requirement of ps+ for multi-player but then i look at the added value with at least 1 free title a month plus discounted games to boot access to betas early. i'm also sure that they will put some of that revenue into improving psn. I may not care for Microsoft, but i have to give them credit on the money they invested on live network….lets hope Sony invests as well to surpass MS live. last year i got PS+ and have enjoyed a couple hundred bucks worth of free games and hundreds of dollars on discounted games. so for dollar vs dollar i feel PSN is worth the 60 dollar investment and maybe Sony will stop the online pass crap.

The plus requirement to play online is a really, really sour grape to consume. I would never have expected that, ever.

We should maybe have seen it coming, seeing how they've prepared the market by sweetening up the Plus membership over the last couple of years.

But yeah, this was disappointing. I can't deny that.

Draguss

About the PS+ requirement. It's not really that bad, PS+ is pretty cheap and you get some great value. But Sony should look to increase the countries it takes cards from then, the one thing more frustrating than not having the money for something, is having the money but not being able to use it.
