We're several years into a new generation and yet, Nintendo is looking to break up the party with a fresh offering.

We've been hearing about the new "NX" console for some time and ever since it was announced, I wondered: Will the Nintendo system be more of a concern to Microsoft or Sony? Or neither?

On the one hand, maybe Nintendo is doing this the right way; they're going to put out a console after the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have been on the market for some years. This way, maybe Ninty can tap into a little boredom on the part of gamers who leapt aboard the next-gen bandwagon back in 2013. There will be plenty of hype surrounding whatever this NX turns out to be, though. Yeah, the market can bear three consoles (maybe), but you have to assume that NX could steal interest away from the competitors.

Then again, maybe we're just saying Nintendo is no longer targeting the same demographic. Maybe they just don't care what Sony or Microsoft does or thinks and they live in their own little Nintendo world. And consequently, Sony and Microsoft don't care what Nintendo does, either, and NX won't affect PS4 or Xbox One either way. Not so sure about that, though.

What say you?

Yea, I'll have to lean towards the latter thought. They're more or less out of each other's markets these days.
Seeing that Nintendo is up against the ropes with the Wii U they'll have to do something pretty unique with the NX.

I feel like their plan doesn't involve any kind of roaring come back to take Sony and MS head on. Not only are the odds stacked heavily against them, it would become another bloody, expensive, and high stakes battle that would likely put them into the red again. That's what drove them away from that volatile market after the GC to begin with.

I expect something quite different from the NX and I suspect mobility is part of the picture. It's where they're strong and I see them wanting to fortify their presence there. They really don't have any significant competition in that market as it is. To me, it seems like the safest area for them to take risks in.

I'm personally more interested in their subscription and unified account services than the NX. They're pretty good at loyalty program stuff.

I say no. Nintendo is seen now as a companion console. Most core consumers who own a Nintendo consol also own either a PS4 or Xbox along with it. I really don't think it will make much difference especially if they don't amp up the power. I'm still a firm believer in that raw power doesn't matter quite as much if the goal is to build fun games. But this generation and today's industry in general seem to care about raw power far more than in the past.

As far as I know the only m-rated games for the Wii U are Bayonetta and The Devil's Third.
I generally play mature games, although I wouldn't mind getting in a little Mario Kart or Donkey Kong once in a while.

So I assume they'll be in the market for quite some time to come, but they don't really cater to me.

If Nintendo is smart they'll adapt a 5 year console cycle but make sure the new console always supports backwards compat with the previous one.

I don't know, but I'm wondering what kind of controller Nintendo will go with this time to alienate 3rd party developers.

i'd say they probably will keep an eye on it but at the same time i think that same people buying ps4's would probbly pick up the NX too for the nintendo games like how people have mutli systems like for example i have the handhelds or nintendo and sony and then i have ps4, ps3 and laptop for all the other stuff thye might be targeting the same kind of people but its hard to say if sony or M$ will be worried about them tbh. i think they can co-excist together the ps4 the xb1 and the NX when it arrives.

happy gaming

Actually, with two small daughters in the house a new console from Nintendo sails up as being a very interesting alternative for the livingroom. Especially if a Netflix client is included.

Well after xbox one committing suicide by telling everyone what their console is, a bad, cheap, and a much less powerful PC that they are going to try to get PC games streamed on it. Basically bringing back that cloud thing they talked about. Matrick was an idiot, but at least he was honest. Phil is trying too hard and that sometimes is a bad thing.

With the overpriced steambox coming out to play your Steam games straight on your home tv via the steambox, why would Valve allow peoples xbox one also stream pc games? Its annoying when the competition isn't being competition anymore. How is that going to make people buy the xbox over the playstation? They are 10m behind, and after being released a year before xbox and ps4, wii u is behind both.

At this point, nothing they say or do will give Nintendo a big push. They should cater to the fans who buy everything they like from Nintendo because those fans love Nintendo. I mean, myself, being a Metroid fan, loves the Metroid Prime Federation Force game. Its what I wanted after years of no Metroid Prime ya know? made Nintendos E3 totally worth watching. But seriously, NX won't smear anything on ps4, and if the battle takes to xbox one, it'll be like who can sink the fastest.

I honest just wanna know what this NX is!!! Not that I'm excited since Nintendo left me but it has that air of mystery and I'm curious to find out if they will have a new idea, a new gimmick, or if they plan to join our decade and have a full power system that just also caters to kiddos and womenfolk. And Jawknee 🙂
