Well, past entries all ran at 30 frames per second and they were incredible, so…

Developer Naughty Dog has confirmed that the single-player action in the hugely anticipated Uncharted 4: A Thief's End will run at 1080p and 30fps.

But the decision wasn't easy. Said co-lead designer Anthony Newman:

"We had a really long, involved conversation about it with all the leads and directors. We just realized that, for the game we wanted to make, to make the best game possible, [30fps] was just something that we had to do."

The other co-lead designer, Kurt Margenau, added that they "want to have the best-looking game" and that in his estimation, a locked 30fps is "way better than a variable 60fps." I think a lot of gamers will probably agree with that. For some specifics, Margenau continued:

"If we wanted to hit a locked 60fps, there's a lot of optimizations in the environments that would have to happen. This would make each level take longer to make. The same amount of geometry would take longer to make because it would have to be so heavily optimized. And so that could end up having story repercussions. 'We want to have this scene, but we don't have the time to make the environment.' It's a feature, like any other, and you have to consider it against everything else."

However, remember that the multiplayer mode for the game will indeed hit 60fps. They just don't want to risk the frame rate fluctuations in the campaign and again, that's understandable. These games almost always run flawlessly, which, in my mind, makes frame rate almost irrelevant.

So damn if Uncharted 4 ends up being the greatest looking PS4 game to date we can honestly go "Wow this is amazing and if they had even more time it could have been even better!". I hope they hold off the official announcement for The Last of Us 2 to do as much optimization and fiddling around as possible and not get stuck with a deadline to meet.

I'm glad they made the decision to go with 30fps instead of compromising on actual graphics quality, which would be the only alternative, something a lot of people don't understand…

Lame. 60fps made the last of us remastered that much better.

But this is ND we're talking about so they get a free pass.

30fps delivers a more natural look, especially for the cinematic experience.

Sure am disappointed. Here's to Uncharted PlayStation 5 Remastered Collection 60fps.

This is one of those productions where so much love and hard work is put into it, I really don't mind *too* much. I know it's going to be a blast and have a special place in my collection. But it really does highlight the lack of processing power in this new generation of consoles. They are going to be around a few years and that is a depressing thought in and of itself (gives his PS4 and Mark Cerny a scowling look).
