I honestly can't think of a better reason to reboot a project.

Back in 2008, we got a peek at Doom 4 , the next entry in the legendary FPS franchise. Eventually, however, the game was canceled and development started fresh in 2013. But why did this happen?

According to a new Polygon interview with Bethesda boss Pete Hines, the initial project was scrapped because it was starting to feel too much like every other shooter in existence…and didn't feel enough like Doom :

"We decided that it wasn't Doom enough and needed to be thrown out and started over. You can probably close your eyes and imagine a 'Call of Doom' or a 'BattleDoom' game, where it starts to feel way too much like: 'Wait, this doesn't feel like Doom, it feels like we're playing some other franchise with a Doom skin on it.'"

Hines added that the game was too slow and too dependent on common shooter elements. He cited moments where the player would've had to take cover, which "doesn't feel right" in Doom . Yeah, old-school FPSs were just about constant movement and massive amounts of shooting. And don't forget about that patented uber-dark Doom vibe! Glad we didn't get "Call of Doom" or "BattleDoom."

The reboot is currently scheduled to release some time next year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Thank God they scrapped the project from 2008 – it looked nothing like Doom.
I liked Doom 3… well, at least half of it. Graphics were jaw-dropping at the time of release and not everyone had good enough PC to run it. The game was dark and scary and relied mostly on jump scares from behind a corner or monsters appearing behind you. This thing got too repetitive, so I got bored and never finished it.
I can see Doom 4 is now faster and more action oriented. Persoally I think it was a good decision. It will definitely appeal to people that will dig into multiplayer, as it resembles the speed/gameplay of good old Q1/Q3 Arena (good times!).
Although I hope there will be more color variety, not only this red(ish) tone all the time.
Definitely going to check the game.
