Yes, I am aware that we're a PlayStation website and as such, the Xbox One maybe shouldn't concern us too much.

But we're all gamers here and when a new console is announced, true gamers pay attention. Besides, the scandal that has arisen from Microsoft's next-gen Xbox reveal is a general news item and of interest to everyone involved in the industry.

Okay, so it seems like the Xbox One reveal didn't exactly wow the crowd. …and that's partly because there was no crowd. Or rather, there wasn't a crowd that was actually applauding, according to several Tweets from those who attended the event, including Adam Sessler and Jeff Gerstmann . It seems that nobody was really applauding and Microsoft implanted fake applause, kinda like what sitcoms have done for years. It's hardly anything new.

My point is that gaming is big business. This isn't a tactic that should surprise anyone, especially where it concerns Microsoft. That's a company that understands how to make money and part of that process might just involve misrepresenting something. A little white lie or two never hurt anyone, right? Well, maybe that isn't true. Maybe this kind of tactic isn't ever okay. Maybe we shouldn't give MS a pass just because it's common practice in big business. The worst part is that given the overall reception of the Xbox One – lukewarm at best, it appears – this story won't dissipate. It'll sort of hang around and everyone will remember it.

So perhaps without even considering it, Microsoft shot themselves in the foot with this one. They probably never even thought of the possibility that anyone would find out, and if they did, they wouldn't care. But clearly, a great many do care. And it just isn't going over very well.

I think it's fair to do, so since it backfired it's fair to criticize as well.

Instead of wowing the crowds and putting the fake noise in there to help make it seem even better they cut a great big fart and then played that during the inevitable silence.

Lol! What a way to start a new generation with a bang: A console launch, or release, to remember.

Do you guys think clapping in the background at the reveal was the worst of it?

GameSpot right now posted a video claiming that the Xbox One is better than the PS4.

Now, everyone with a brain and who has read the specs of each console and saw what's coming for each console in terms of software knows that what GameSpot is claiming is a lie.

So why are they saying that? follow the money.

1. GameSpot is owned by CBS
2. Did anyone noticed that during the reveal they showed THE PRICE IS RIGHT? A CBS SHOW?

MS' money-hats at work, ladies and gents….

Yeah there was a suspiciously placed news story on my local news about the Xbox One and how everyone thought it was the better system for gamers than PS4.

I became Neo and could see the coding of the Matrix and all the links that led back to some kind of MS ownership/propaganda campaign.

Yes, I have noticed the same, on several mainstream media sites actually.

Either:

A) The articles were written by uninformed bigots who only look at what's on the surface.
B) They were all paid by MS.

I was kind of hoping Square Enix would troll them with their Luminous engine, (same video) that would have been hilarious.

It just seems lame that they HAD to. What they couldn't expect people in the heartland of MS to cheer them on or something? They could've at least filled the center with MS employees.

Anyway, the Xbox One is a commercialized gimmick as far as I'm concerned. The Kinect is officially forced on you. For me it's all about Sony and Nintendo from here on out. These two companies at least seem most interested in gaming as their centerpiece. Sure, my small disclaimer is if, and only if, MS announces something in-house that just blows my mind that I could consider the Xbox One. I really do doubt it though. I absolutely doubt it. And yes, it will take more than another Halo or Gears-like title to do it.

Sony absolutely did not do it at the PlayStation Event. That's kinda why people thought it was too quiet.

I really doubt it I'm sure most companies do it and I think you just can't hear it when there is actually real clapping going on. Unless of cours you were there personally then that's a different story.

Maybe not for the PlayStation 4, who knows? But they have done it before. Like I said, every company does it.

@Killa Tequilla I don't think Nintendo ever held a similar hardware reveal as Sony or MS did. They showed their last console at E3. And it was really quiet for the most part. And when they revealed the original Wii, no one clapped. But that was in Japan, so I guess over there its polite not to make noise when revealing new hardware or something.

I did not know this. But thank you Ben. You have helped me discover something that has puzzled me for some time regarding Microsoft. I have always had trouble defining the vibe I got from them but this makes it clear. I always felt like they wish to fool me into liking or caring for their products. Which sucks because I don't hate MS. Not completely anyway. It's simple, If I don't like a product I don't buy it. So save your imaginary applaud please. Give me quality and I may give you my time.

To be be clear, yes business is business and companies will do anything to sell their wares but this is technology. This audience ain't going for that bullshit! Most of us anyway.

Inserting pre-recorded sound in live events is very, very commonplace, and not just in cases like this. Though it could have been done to misrepresent the reaction (which isn't implausible,) another very likely reason to do it is because the home viewing audience expects that sound. Live sporting event, such as rowing, pipe in pre-recorded rowing sounds, as miking every boat isn't worth the time.

Now the real question is if they had it as a backup in case the reaction was lukewarm (as in this case) or if they had planned on doing it anyway, as it just "sounds" better to the average listener. It's possible it was the latter, and it only comes off as deceitful in a case like this, when it is misrepresentative of the truth.

Don't get me started on movies… EVERYTHING you hear is meticulously designed to sound natural, even if it's not 😉

Waaaiiiiit The aplause i heard was…fake? I thought there was a few who were impressed. Ouch. Now i just feel bad. Like kicking a scared victim or something. Sony really started something and MS couldn't retaliate. I just hope because of xbox ones blu ray we can finally move out of this era of FPS and start to see more difference in the market. My personal desires of course being more RPG's.

Microsoft has trolled the entire industry. In tomorrow's news we will find out that not only the applause was fake. So was the console itself. At E3 the "REAL" Unveiling of the XBox-Infinity will take place. A spokesmodel will lift the XBOX-One to reveal a sleek slender more aesthetically pleasing console. So truly only the controller was real.

Here's what I gathered.
They are implementing things that were unveiled already in the PS4, was revealed by Microsoft to not be a graphical powerhouse, is more of a media hub than a gaming machine, and is preventing the usage of used games.
Plus their biggest game, Call of Duty Ghosts, turned out to be (in my opinion) less than stellar visual-wise, hinting that it will be more of the same for another 8 years.
I will stick with my PC and the PS4. Seems like a good balance for the next-gen.

Fake applause and an underwhelming reveal. They might as well just close up shop now and cut their losses. They've had one good hardware generation and they've just become unbearably arrogant about it.
This will gut the used market, stifle rentals and loans as well as gouging multiple gamer households. If they think that everyone in my house will pay them for the right to play the SAME GAME then I'll helpfully suggest what slot they can shove the disk into!

Something seemed odd about the applause during the conference and now I know why. I mean it was as if they were making facial expressions on stage to initiate a applause…Hate to say it but I may be a one console man next gen for a while and the PS4 is the console of choice out of the gate.
