Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki has big plans for the beloved franchise.

And he's going to need considerable cash to ensure his vision becomes a reality.

As most of you know by now, the Shenmue III Kickstarter campaign began during E3 and has since racked up a whopping $3.5 million with 25 days still remaining. But Suzuki might need every one of those days. During a recent Reddit interview , he talked numbers. First:

"I will say this. If we reach the $5 million mark, one of the things I really want to do with Shenmue 3 will become a reality."

But Suzuki added that the game will only "truly have the features of an open-world" experience if they reach the $10 million mark, which is indeed a long ways off. He didn't go into detail concerning these features but he did talk about some Stretch goals, which includes additional towns and extra side activities.

"There will be part time jobs that will be indicative of those you would find in China. In the Stretch goals there will also be the old favorites."

Lastly, Suzuki said he'd also like to do another game, as he originally planned for there to be four or five entries in the series. In order to complete the original 11-chapter story, he'd need to go into a fourth installment.

And I doubt anyone would complain.

I hope it gets there but I feel like with its slowing pledge pace it won't get there. Maybe Sony will jump in and say something like, "we'll double whatever the kickstarter sums to" that would be so awesome.

Sony's already backing the game, and they were all along.

I find it weird that they're still acting like this game depends on the kickstarter when Sony has already admitted that they're financially backing the game, and that they've been meeting with Suzuki behind closed doors for years concerning this project.

It doesn't need to hit 10 million to have 'a true open world experience'. They just want to defray as much of the cost as possible because Kickstarter has become the new pre-order, a way for publishers to guarantee they have your money before even delivering a product, only Kickstarter comes with the bonus that they don't even need to deliver the product, ever.

They probably aren't announcing that so people continue to fund their kickstarter. As it is I believe the funding significantly slowed once it was revealed that Sony is helping fund the project. It'll be interesting to see how the development of the game turns out.

They obviously hid the fact that they were funding it because why would anyone dump their money into a Kickstarter for a game if they know that multi-billion dollar corporation Sony is already footing the bill?

The Kickstarter for Bloodstained was the same deal. Well after it hit its goal, which means everyone who pledged money is locked in no matter what, it was announced that Bloodstained was already 90% funded.

I suppose those kickstarter dollars are to expand the game beyond what Sony is willing to put a cap on (such as adding old favorites).

I'm just glad it's coming. Talk about the year of the impossible. Too bad Devs don't have the billionaire friends that politicians have.
