If you thought the shooting mechanic in Fallout 3 wasn't that great, you aren't the only one.

In a new GameSpot interview , Bethesda creative director Todd Howard admitted that the shooting element in the last series installment was "mehhn."

As a result, they've worked hard to revamp the first-person shooting in the upcoming Fallout 4 . Howard did clarify that this title is a role-playing game through and through, but they still needed a better FPS system:

"We started out with Fallout 4 knowing that, look, we can't apologise for being a role-playing game. We have to build a first-person shooter, and it needs to be a really, really good one. We spent a lot of time on that."

Howard added that the game will also boast the VATS system, which is a strategic mechanic that slows combat to a crawl, allowing players to target specific body parts. How do you think long-time fans of the series will respond to VATS and the improved shooting? Is it what they wanted to see?

Eh… The VATS was in Fallout 3 and New Vegas too – and the fans has already responded with it being great that it's still there.

Didn't you even play the games, Ben?

I am kind of confused over that paragraph as well. VATS was a huge part of two Fallout games and looks massively improved in F4.

World, quoting: "How do you think long-time fans of the series will respond to VATS"

It's kinda like asking how GTA fans will respond to being able to steal cars in GTA5… 🙂

I just meant how they'd respond to what is obviously an updated VATS system.

And yes, dad, I have played the games.

We saw VATS in action in the videos. It's how it always have been – time freeze, mark body parts, press play. It's not very updated or different at all.

He makes it sound like it is a new feature in that interview you refer to and that's obviously what fooled you, but it's not. He's just selling the game to new gamers.

Nothing wrong in forgetting a feature in a game you never liked in the first place. But this is such a core feature of the fight mechanics that it was a bit surprising.

I understood him to mean the gunplay outside of the VATS sequence. Which would be good, because it was pretty bad compared to a typical shooter.

The non-VATS gunplay in Fallout 3 and New Vegas wasn't just bad compared to any typical shooter, it was bad compared to any game where the concept of shooting things is even remotely present.

VATS isn't much better, but I know I'm in the minority on that one.

This is why I played a melee character with that perk that makes things explode when you punch them.

This made the game so much more enjoyable that trying to use guns 🙂

I really think that fallout 4 is going to be game of the year. It's far surpassing the quality of fallout 3. Plus the added mods that are going to be available to both PC and systems? that's amazing. They even have jetpacks now, gtav didn't even get jetpacks.

VATS was all I used, it's the greatest part of the combat. Slo mo slaughter, exploding gore, eyeballs and chunks and matrix-y bullets!

So yeah when you ran out of action points the regular shooting wasn't very cool, glad to hear it will be better but I wouldn't care if it was the same.

I agree with all you say. Shooting without VATS wasn't much to speak of, but I would not mind if it remained the same either.

Wasn't part of the reason the shooting was poor because you were meant to be poor at shooting anyway. Until you maxed out the points on your chosen firearm type? Not excusing the whole thing but I honestly wouldn't expect to be that accurate if I've only just started to learn how to shoot.

In most FPS games you're a soldier or atleast well practiced with a firearm.
