So the Xbox One has been unveiled and as a result, Sony stock surged. …wait, what?

Well, it's true. Immediately after Microsoft announced their new console, Sony shares jumped over 8%. Shares were then trading at about $22.70, which is a definite increase.

Microsoft's "all-in-one" living room entertainment console will launch later this year (no date or price yet), and it features 8GB of RAM, the x64 processor, USB 3.0, and a Blu-Ray drive. It also has a new controller, a DVR-like feature (similar to the PS4's), and "15 exclusive" titles set to release in the first year of the system's life. One major exclusive – Forza Motorsport 5 – will be available at the console's launch.

But maybe that just wasn't enough to impress people. Maybe they still think Sony has the edge heading into the holiday season. Of course, we still need dates and prices for these systems before we can make any accurate predictions, right? I think we do.

I'm not surprised. This was *not* a good start from MS.

– A camera (kinetic) is *required* to be connected to the box for it to work?

– Functionality that enables developers to implement "always on" requirements in their games if they wish?

– Restrictions on used games – now you need to pay a fee to Microsoft?

– A slightly redesigned controller, in contrast to the innovative controller from Sony?

– Embedded both a xbox operating system *and* a Windows core for Skype, Internet Explorer and other applications, and a *third* system to bridge the two? wtf?! (if I understood correctly)

Man I tell you – Sony has won before it even started. They must have a crazy party at Sony HQ just about now.

Man I hope we don't need our stupid camera.

I assume that the blue light in front of the controller needs a cam to have any functionality. But that should be depending on the actual games if they use it or not, just like the Move controller.

Those three OS are going to take a huge chunk of RAM power, leaving little (compared to PS4 anyway) to gaming.

The only thing I think can regain X gamers faith in the Box is GAMES!!! Good Ones.. Epic ones… Exclusive 1st party ones…

I hope they prove me wrong at E3. I like that MS woke up the DRAGON that SONY is! They came out swinging with the PS4 and as of yet have not crossed any boundaries that can be considered cheap or dirty or just plain stupid. Sony is letting the features and games speak for themselves.

as usual only giving half the information!

1 kinect is NOT required to use the system, phill spencer confirmed that in a interview shortly after the event wrapped up.
just because the system comes with one, i bet you $ony will charge 100+ bucks for theirs, does not mean its required for the system to function.

2 the always online thing is there for developers to utilize so they can utilize xboxs new azure cloud system technology to the one can offload certain computations off to the cloud.
thats why some games will require a net connection, kinda hard to connect to servers and perform these tasks with no internet connection.

3 the restrictions are not mandatory, there if people want to install a game to the hard disc saving wear and tear on the disc itself.
obviously doing that, and not requiring the disc, means the discs have to be locked to your account otherwise you could lend them between friends.
hows being able to install a game to the HDD a BAD thing!?
at least this way you get faster load times, save wear and tear on the disc, AND dont have to constantly switch between discs, or take 100 games and cases with you when you go to a friends place or on holidays.
and these are BAD things!?

4 the "slightly redesigned" controller is slightly redesigned because there were no innovations needed!
plus concave analogue sticks, improved triggers, and a gimmicky unnecessary battery sucking cost increasing track pad, are hardly "innovations"!
o, and dont forget the light bar, put that in the same category as the track pad.

5 kinda give you the last one, that does seem needlessly complicated and convoluted!
and it probably will take up allot of memory, but lets not forget the 360s OS STILL takes up a fraction of what the XMB on the ps3 does, so who knows it may be allot more efficient than you think.

at least if your going to complain about things, at least supply ALL the details!
not just the ones that suit you!

Unless a majority of the press out there is dead wrong in all they say, to have kinect connected is a requirement.

It is also reported to be a requirement to hook the box onto the internet every 24th hour as a minimum, regardless if you play the game 100% from local media.

The "always on" feature is *not* just for cloud computing. It's enough to make your game *required* to store a savegame on the cloud for the "always on" to be enforced. And what's worse, a representative from Microsoft has gone on record saying "they HOPE the developers will force 'always on' through".

So sorry, I have nothing against "devil advocates" but in this case you got a weak case, Underline.

you DONT need kinect connected to the system, as i said before they confirmed that in a interview after the event.
problem ATM is M$ has so many different people saying different things, people dont know who to believe.
$ony had the exact same problem, after the ps4s announcement yosp was asked on twitter about always online and he completely denied it, but a few days later a interview with a EU PR guy said those details were not decided yet.
go onto majour nelsons blog, theres a good 45 minute video explaining the hardware and requirements of the system, they still have not worked out how the online requirements are going to work whether its 24 hours or longer.
its not as if you get booted out of the game when your connection drops like it is in DRM PC games.
for all we know this is just a verification service to make sure everything on the system is suppose to be on the system, and ill bet my left nut $onys going to have something different!
both systems have been hacked to kingdom come, $ony and M$ ARE going to force some sort of internet requirements to help make sure people are behaving themselves.

o, as for the M$ rep of course they hope developers utilize the azure service!
hey lets spend millions in creating these massive server banks to have a ever upgrade able console, and never use them.
rolls eyes.
the WHOLE point of the always online service is to utilize the cloud computational capabilities, and the back end security.
as long as its not a PC DRM environment like 1 sec of dropout = corrupted game save, then it will be fine!

It was mostly about TV, sports, and an all new Halo…. TV show. Call of Duty ghosts was the only gameplay (not really) footage I saw, and it did not impress me like BF4 did. Audience cheers was scripted and programmed.

To be fair, we probably have to wait for E3 to show what Xbox One is really up to. However, Beamboom is right in saying that the start is a bad one, for me at least.

My takes is they are after the non-gamer community. For all we know they may make a deal with Comcast or other TV providers to rent it out to the their user base as the box top.
So the One is as been called it the "all-in-one" is for more than gamers

Kryten1029a
Kryten1029a

Are the grandmas and casual buyers going to make that distinction? That was why they went with 360 instead of XBox 2, in order to avoid just that confusion.

Toxin

@Kryten1029a
One would think they will advertize to each demagogic individually allowing for a wider user base for non gamers.

My take is that if it is a success the on how I am thinking they are going, How many systems sold will be form gamers.

Perhaps, I'm the minor, but I'd take it over infinity, durango, or 720. Their focus was to create an all in one entertainment device, so in a way, it's very fitting, imo.

The size of the thing it's huge too. Not impressed that much World to be honest.

The voice commands after a while would get tiresome, imagine your lil kid brother walks in on you Xbox off or Xbox internet explorer on you mid game, the arguments it's gonnna cause.

Will I get one, not so sure now after that.

I like Cod so before anyone shoots me down in flames lol I liked the look of the new one. Forza schmorza im not that bothered by it. It does look good, we get Drive Club pretty much the same more or less.

Heard a new name for it too the Xbox None, made me chuckle slightly.

Quantum Break looked good too. Have to wait and see what happens at E3 now, again it will depend on price etc ūüôā

I've said this before but there has been evidence that Microsoft is becoming less interested in gaming and more interested in general entertainment.

The Xbox One seems to confirm this. It seems that it's more of a general entertainment system than a gaming system with gaming being just one of a number of emphasized functions as opposed to the primary function.

And yes the name is a bit of a head scratcher. It seems that Microsoft is taking a page from Sony's playbook and going with numbered system names. And Blu Ray? So Microsoft it seems is finally admitting defeat in the whole format war several years after the war actually ended. I guess better late than never right?

FatherSun

There is MORE than evidence my friend. Microsoft has outright stated that they want the living room. And just as you stated, the XB1 confirms this.

Following Sony on numbered systems is interesting. Will the be an Xbox-Two someday?

The name is about all of the stuff it's supposed to do. The one piece of hardware you will need for all of your entertainment.

Temjin001

The console is a joke. It's emphasis on 'owning the family room' is a turn off. The message here is clearly that the gamer is not their core. What the crap is the use of all of this quick switching? Who the heck needs to switch from the "Price is Right" and whatever game they're playing? What use is IE when everyone has internet access from the phone or tablet? Who cares for all that crap?
The already lacking hardware is made worse by how much resources are reserved for the multi-tasking OS. MS's omission of any true specs all but confirms it's inferiority to PS4, hardware wise.
I was kind of hoping the Xbox One rumors weren't true but they are. This may be MS's disaster console with gamers.

Looking Glass

Well even if it's not a knockoff name (so to speak) it does sound like one. And it might cause a bit of confusion for consumers at least at first. Microsoft probably should have gone with Xbox 720 or something.

..everything as in adds cable TV watching to the mix and finally BluRay support. I suppose we should ask if it supports 3D Blu Rays?
Really, the PS3 was and is already an entertainment hub of many. MS pretending that it's some fragmented problem zone of the living room is just false. I really can't believe they spent like half their show trying to pitch 'One' ness.

The immediate surge in SONY stock is due to the underwhelming XboxDone reveal. I easily expected this. If they were to have MINDBLOWN the industry then things would look different. Although I still believe that SONY would have been in a good position either way.

As stated by TOXIN above, if people can replace their Cable boxes for an Xbox One then I see no reason why they wouldn't prefer a full fledged Entertainment System versus a dumb terminal cable box. This is the lesson that MS has learned from SONY. Their TROJAN is exactly the fact that the Xbox One is essentially a CABLE Box.

Looking at the bigger picture I have always felt that MS was never in ANY industry to become the "BEST". Only the best selling. They came into gaming because of the size and exponential growth of the industry. Now that they have acquired a healthy market share they have sets their sites on Television. It is a good strategy. No one should deny that.

Once you own the living room your influence on people is tremendous. You can convince people to do almost anything through television. Do you think you will see a PS4 commercial on the Xbox One if they have deals with cable companies? Maybe, but one thing is for sure if MS could block it they will. They are kings of EXCLUSIVITY deals. It has always been and always will be about the Money!

I am not worried though. SONY knows Games and I sense that SONYs PS4 will also have the capability to connect to cable television. Or maybe their Internet television venture will come to fruition. Such exciting times no?

There will someday be a movie about this!

WorldEndsWithMe

I don't think their typical strategy will work this time, I'd rather have a cable box because it's simpler and won't fall apart.

FatherSun
FatherSun

I don't think it will work the way they expect. The battlefield is too wide for any one company to completely dominate anymore. Those who are not easily swayed will see this XB1 for what it is. It is an attempt to control as much of the entertainment industry as possible. Of course there are more easy prey than savvy consumers in the world but the world is waking up so I don't know how far they will get. If and when I ever own one it will be more out of curiosity. I am sure there will be some games that I will find interesting at some point.
