Another useful update for PlayStation 4.

Sony's console now has a new media player (yeah, I know, about time) that allows you to stream video, music and pictures from a PC or USB stick.

The Media Player app is now available on the PSN; just download the tile and that's it. Most of the major file formats are supported; you can use MKV, MP4 and AVI and for a full list of compatible formats, click here . As far as many are concerned, this is a great update and one that makes the PS4 that much more appealing as a central entertainment hub.

That's what video game consoles are nowadays, of course, and it's hard to remember a time when all they did was play games. Hell, I was okay with that then and I am now. But times change.

MKV? holy crap that means I don't have to recode all anime episode by episode for days at a time!

BTW World there is a great piece of software called mkv2vob which can convert mkv files to video that the PS3 recognizes. I stream all my content (17tb worth, and yes I'm bragging) but for friends that use hard drives I use this software. It can convert an 8gig blu-ray in 45 seconds. Thought if you're still using that laptop of yours it might take an hour 😉

Fareez, I do. I enjoy this highest form of art.

LV I wasn't making fun, I wanted help getting into Jpop but you won't HELP me! I have no idea who to check out.

I use something that converts to mp4, I have an actual good computer desktop now. It still won't run any games cuz I'm not buying a graphics card for a million dollars but i can code movies and such just fine thankfully.

Streaming just never seems to work for me, it breaks down somewhere.

Perfume (My favorite)
Girls' Generation
Capsule
Kyary Pamyu Pamyu
Super Junior

What are your computer specs? A sub $200 graphics card will give you PS4 graphics.

The PS3 is terrible for streaming media. I eventually went with a roku/plex media player combo which is as seamless as Netflix.

Don't know why it took them 1.5 years to make…it shoulda been there at launch or within the first 3-6 mos. Glad it's finally here, though!

Would prefer if it allowed us to just use the PS4 hardrive but least they added it if the PS4 had more USB ports I wouldn't mind and probably just keep a small external plugged in.

Useless.
It doesn't support NTFS
It doesn't support DTS
It doesn't support subtitles.

Back to connecting my external drive directly to TV that supports all above.

Well done Sony.

It doesn't support Beta either.

We do need subtitles tho.

If it supports mkv files then it should also support subtitles since they're automatically embed within the video file.

Part of me is confused why there is no mention of flacs, which would be way better than mp3's for playing during games.
The rest is almost glad it doesn't because I just upgraded my receiver to one with flac support, which would have been somewhat moot if sony cared enough to add it to ps4.
Of course maybe it's because they only report compatibility of up to 2gb sticks, even though my 32gb works for the music player.
2gb seems like a really pointless and pitiful limitation for a device that only launched a year and a half ago. Most vendors don't even sell sticks that small anymore.
